Sinestro
Character » Sinestro appears in 1184 issues.
Once considered the greatest Green Lantern in any sector, Sinestro came to believe that the only way to ensure order in the universe was through the reign of fear, a crime for which the Guardians banished him to Qward. There he created the first yellow power ring and later on founded his own corps, The Sinestro Corps. He has clashed frequently with his former student and protege; Hal Jordan. The relationship between the two is a complicated one, a mixture of both hatred and respect in equal measures.
Is Jackie Earle Haley Sinestro?
Back in October, the rumor came out that Jacke Earle Haley (Watchmen, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Human Target) was up for the role of Sinestro. AICN was told this by a 'reliable source.' Shortly after, Haley himself debunked the rumor stating that he didn't know anything about the movie. But does that mean he's completely out of the running?
Hitfix reported today there may be some truth to this rumor. They do mention that Hector Hammond will be one of the two villains in the movie. Apparently the other is LEGION. That's the first I'm hearing about that. But again, what about Sinestro? It seems the filmmakers are playing it smart. There's a lot to tell in this story and they don't want to simply cram it all in. If you think back, Sinestro wasn't a villain in the beginning. The plan may be to introduce him in this movie and bring him back in sequels (providing this one is successful). Sinestro won't even be in the movie the whole time. Which makes perfect sense. Hitfix also reports that the studio is really happy with Jackie Earle Haley from his performances in Watchmen and A Nightmare On Elm Street. Hitfix says, "Jackie Earle Haley is the only choice for Sinestro by the studio." They also mention that Alan Scott will somehow be in the movie.
What does all this mean? We'll have to wait for an official confirmation. Hitfix has been spot on in the past but for now, we have to treat this as a rumor. Do you think Haley is the only choice for Sinestro? Do you think it's completely crazy if they give Alan Scott a cameo?
I think that Hugo Weaving would make an excellent Sinestro. Jackie Earle Haley is a great actor but I would prefer Hugo.
I agree, Weaving or Haley would be great picks.
Also agree with the article...Sinestro doesn't HAVE to be the villain in this film. I'd actually like it if the franchise could build up to that. GL: First Flight for example. It had Sinestro as the villain and that was OK, but the viewer could clearly tell that he was a bad guy the whole time. Maybe the in the real life adaptation they can take their time with Sinestro and first present him as the Greatest Green Lantern Ever before tearing him down from that status an hour later.
My vote is for Hugo Weaving as Sinestro. As much as I love and adore Jackie Earle Haley, I'm a big fan of his, but I would much rather see him in another role. I wouldn't mind seeing him as Sinestro, but Weaving would be my "perfect" choice.
Sinestro's look wasn't modeled on Peter Sellers. His look was based on David Niven."If only Peter Sellers the man who was the inspiration for Sinestro was still alive."
I actually don't mind seeing Sinestro in a minor role, watching his anger build as Hal pushes him out as the Guardians favorite until his pride over takes him and he turns his back on the corp. Perfect for a trilogy of movies as long as they can get the actors, directors, and all that locked up early. And Haley as Sinestro seems to fit.
" I'm just glad Sinestro isn't the villain. Haley would work, though my biggest problem is that he's so short. "Sinestro works best as a villain

I agree absolutely, but you have to give him time to befriend Hal Jordan first as the "best Lantern in the Corp". Let them build their friendship, let Hal start to get disgusted with Sinestro's method of absolute justice, and then in the sequel, kick him out of the Corps and make him the villain.

I think Jackie Earle Haley makes a good character actor, and if Sinestro isn't going to be a villain to begin with then things are looking good... I have a good feeling about this :)
" Is Jackie Earle Haley Sinestro? "
no.
he'd suck. anyone but him, please.
I agree. with this (:
They should introduce Sinestro in the first film, then bring him back for a big villian in the (maybe) Sequal.
Along with Blake Lively as Star Sapphire. ;)

I agree but if they do end up going with Haley its a good choice. Sinestro is a scawny little guy, but reynolds is like 6ft1 or 6ft 2 and if they have to stand next to each other it gonna look funny because Haley's like 5ft 8. I wouldn't complain tho

I love Jackie but he's not Sinestro to me. They need to get Hugo for the part. Obviously he's a fan favorite for Sinestro, and for good reasons too.
Love the idea that Alan will make a cameo. I would like to see maybe not in this one but in a sequel to see Guy Gardner make an appearance. Preferaby played by Ben Browder (Farscape) .
Exactly, you have to build up the suspense. This should be like Star Wars or Naruto, where you know the heroes friend/rival is going to turn evil but you want to see what makes him evil and how the hero reacts......Did I just talk about Sci-fi, Manga, and comics in the same sentence, wow I'm geeky. :P" @robbiesol said:

while i do think Jackie Earle Haley is a very good actor Hugo just looks like he could pull off playing Sinestro (just look at the picture above my post)

"We have three different stories but which is truth 0.o "Everything I've ever read in over 40 years of comics reading, including letters columns in the comics themselves back in the day (60's, 70's), in The Amazing World of DC Comics fanzine in the 80's, and currently on Wikipedia (for what that's worth), quotes Gil Kane as saying it was David Niven. But I could be wrong.
Jackie Earle Haley is out. Mark Strong in?
