This post relates to: Silver Surfer, Batman, What superhero would you rather see as a villain?

Seriously, in both cases, heroes would become an endangered species.

Just think if he were willing to kill...
If he didn't care about intelligent life... Galactus would have consumed the Earth back in the 60's.

Here we go with another mini-series.  So soon after Requiem.  That was a good story even if it was a tiny bit confusing.  We have to assume it happened out of continuity with the way it ended.  I also thought the whole Spider-Man/Silver Surfer interraction was a little weird.  They have been around each other before but it didn't feel like it.  I'm not sure what to think about this series.  It's not screaming out to me.  Guess we'll see how I'm feeling the day it comes out.

The Sentinel of the Spaceways soars once more in the all new Silver Surfer: In Thy Name #1 (of 4), as the Surfer finds himself embroiled in a conflict he may not be able to win! Written by acclaimed author Simon Spurrier (Gutsville, 2000AD), with gorgeous art by the Eisner-winning Tan Eng Huat (making his Marvel debut) and a stunning cover by superstar Michael Turner, In Thy Name takes Surfer into the farthest depths of space where he discovers a threat he can’t ignore! In this timely and relevant tale of a utopia taken over by an enlightened group who subjugate the masses in the name of the greater good, the Silver Surfer is drawn into their conflict and must choose a side. But can he possibly take action when he may be dealing with powers far greater—and deadlier—than his own? With the combination of dirty politics, organ stealing pirates, demonic beasts and more enemies waiting in the shadows, the former herald of Galactus is about to find out that heaven can indeed be hell!

Combining the lush pencils of Huat with the inventive and nuanced storytelling of Spurrier, Silver Surfer: In Thy Name #1 is a must-read for fans of Marvel’s most iconic space faring hero!

This post relates to: Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer

Say what you will, I liked the movie.  Was it great?  No.  Was I happy with Galactus?  No.  Was it better than the first?  Oh yeah.  Was I entertained?  Uh huh.  So I am going to pick this up.  I'm actually going a step further and getting it on Blu-ray.   They did a good job on the Silver Surfer.  No surprise that there's plans to do solo films with him (I reported that Doug Jones has signed a three picture deal: www.comicvine.com/fantastic-four/3804/news/&newsId=133).

You will have your choice in how you buy the dvd.  Besides Blu-ray, you have your regular version (why?) and also the 2 disc "Power Cosmic" version.  The Blu-ray will contain everything from the Power Cosmic version and more.

The downside is I'm sure there will be another version released in a year or so.  A "2.5" version or Director's cut.  Marvel likes the double dipping.

Here's a list of the features and specs:

Single-disc DVD Features:
- Commentary by director Tim Story
- Commentary by producer Avi Arad, writer Don Payne and film editors Peter S. Elliot and William Hoy

Double-disc DVD Features:
- Commentary by director Tim Story
- Commentary by producer Avi Arad, writer Don Payne and film editors Peter S. Elliot and William Hoy
- Extended/Deleted Scenes (with optional commentary by director Tim Story)
- Family Bonds: The Making of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer documentary
- Sentinel of the Spaceways: Comic Book Origins of The Silver Surfer featurette
- The FantastiCar: State of the Art featurette
- The Power Cosmic special effects featurette
- Character Design With Spectral Motion featurette
- Scoring the Fantastic featurette
- Interactive FantastiCar concept images gallery
- Theatrical Trailers

Blu-Ray Specs:
- "Saving The World One Question at a Time" trivia game
- "Who Dares Defy Galactus?" multi-player strategy game
- D-Box motion sensor capabilities
- High-definition trailers
Plus all the features from the double-disc edition:
- Commentary by director Tim Story
- Commentary by producer Avi Arad, writer Don Payne and film editors Peter S. Elliot and William Hoy

This has been a good series.  Too bad about the Surfer...

Marvel Knights’ critically acclaimed limited series, Silver Surfer: Requiem, soars the spaceways to its powerful conclusion! The red hot creative team J. Michael Straczynski and Esad Ribic’s bring fans a moving account of the Silver Surfer’s final ride, which has shocked and thrilled fans and critics alike! Now, in the face of impossible odds, the Surfer has crossed the galaxy and arrived at Zenn-La. But what awaits him on his home planet?

“With the combined talents of J Michael Straczynski and Esad Ribic, Silver Surfer: Requiem is the start of a hauntingly epic masterpiece, which should make a lot of Surfer fans happy,” said Troy Brownfield of Newsarama.com.

Similar sentiments were echoed by David Wallace of SilverBulletComicbooks.com, who explained, “the universally relevant subject matter provides an interesting platform for some well-conceived modern parables, and the lush artwork makes this book irresistible.”

For untold years, Norrin Radd surfed the galaxy, exploring the darkness between stars, witnessing the rise and fall of vast civilizations. Now Galactus’ preeminent former herald’s ride comes to an end. Don’t miss his last moments on the planet where his cosmic journey began in Silver Surfer: Requiem #4!

Here's this week's stuff from Marvel.  As always, there's some good stuff coming.  Another Iron Fist.  Can't wait.  Amazing Spidey.  Will he kick the Kingpin's tubby rear?  What's a week without some Hulk?  And in the what-the-heck dept, Onslaught Reborn #4 is finally coming out.  I know someone asked about that on the boards.  Oh and keep a lookout for the Thor #1 Zombie variant coming out this week.  Not sure about how available it will be.  I'd imagine it shouldn't be too hard to get if your LCS ordered it.  I don't think it's an incentive cover.

This post relates to: Silver Surfer

This was a pretty decent read.  I suggest picking up the second printing if you missed it the first time around.

Marvel is proud to announce that J. Michael Straczynski and Esad Ribic’s Silver Surfer: Requiem #1 (of 4) will be going back to print with a new variant cover featuring Esad Ribic’s stunning interior art. The first amazing issue retold the origin of Marvel’s premiere cosmic nomad, and puts him face-to-face with his own mortality, an enemy that even he may not be able to defeat.

The critics can’t stop raving about this Marvel Knights limited series, with Richard George of IGN.com deeming Silver Surfer: Requiem a “must have,” saying “If this first issue is any indication, we have the start of a modern Marvel classic.”

Adam Chapman of ComiXtreme.com called Strazynski’s writing “intensely intimate and emotional” and says Esad Ribic’s art is “awe-inspiring,” going on to say, “This is an absolutely amazing book. It’s just flat-out incredible. The artwork is jaw-dropping, and the writing captures the Silver Surfer in a way that Stan Lee would be most proud of.”

SilverBulletComics.com’s Quinton Peeples echoed the sentiment, declaring this opening chapter to be, “deep and beautiful,” adding, “The Surfer is dying… Reed and Sue’s emotion at this discovery is one of the most moving passages I’ve ever seen.”

With Silver Surfer making headlines all over the world and the continued success of the Marvel Knights imprint (in the tradition of Spider-Man: Reign), Marvel advises retailers to check their orders on Silver Surfer: Requiem #2. When the Surfer meets Spider-Man, the two discuss the trial and tribulations of their heroic journeys, in an emotional story that fans won’t soon forget!

This post relates to: Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four

Variety has reported that a 100-foot tall Silver Surfer has appeared in London.

LONDON -- Fox is finding even more unique ways to market "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer."
Having already landed the film's image on U.S. quarters, studio turned to the iconic London Eye observation wheel.

Under cover of darkness, construction workers busily erected a gleaming 100-foot mesh replica of the Silver Surfer comicbook character on the wheel, which is 450 feet high. Result was unveiled Monday, four days before the pic bows in Blighty.

But don't expect the Eye to become a regular clothes peg for giant PVC movie characters central to summer tentpoles.

"Nothing has ever been attached to the construction of the observation wheel like this before, and it may never again. We do not want to dilute the impact of our partnership with Fox by repeating the feat until at least 2012," a London Eye rep told Daily Variety.

This post relates to: Silver Surfer, J. Michael Straczynski, Esad Ribic

When I picked up issue #1 and before I read it, I figured it was just another tie-in to the upcoming movie.  Didn't think it'd have much to offer.  I finally read it and was impressed.  I'm curious where this is going to go.  All around nice package.  No wonder #1 sold out.

J. Michael Straczynski and Esad Ribic’s stunning first issue of Silver Surfer: Requiem has sold-out at Diamond. This astonishing issue retells the origin of Marvel’s premiere cosmic nomad, and puts him face-to-face with his own mortality.

“Requiem is just really well written, from beginning to end everything is put together great,” says CraveOnline.com. “The story is very compelling as the reader get’s to see Norrin Radd come to terms with his fate.”

SilverBulletComics.com calls Staczynski “fantastic” and “on his game.” Silver Bullet goes on to say Ribic’s art “truly captures the fantastic nature of these characters” and that it is “reminiscent of Alex Ross’ work on Marvels.”

BronkenFrontier.com’s David Baxter raves about Esad Ribic’s art saying, “His fully painted pages are magisterial to the extreme, presenting the title character with all the glory and grandeur that such a figure so richly deserves. It’s an ingenious, skillful blend of the mundane and the majestic and it just plain works wonders for the Surfer, both for the character and the unique world of big-and-small he inhabits.”

Silver Surfer: Requiem #1 is the first of a four part tale that will test Norrin Radd with an enemy that he has no way to defeat. So be sure to pick up the next 3 issues of J. Michael Straczynski and Esad Ribic’s break-out hit.

Readers are advised that there may still be copies of Silver Surfer: Requiem #1 at the retailer level. Marvel has no plans at this time to go back to press on the first issue and advises retailers to adjust their orders appropriately on Silver Surfer: Requiem #2.

This post relates to: Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four

Wow, this is pretty crazy.

Hollywood really does mint money.
In an unprecedented marketing move, 20th Century Fox and the Franklin Mint have created a Silver Surfer U.S. quarter that has been put into limited circulation in advance of the release of "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer."

Pic bows in the U.S. on June 15.

In recent days, a total of 40,000 quarters were released into the currency stream after being dispatched to cities across the country in special silver armored trucks.

Legal tender coin is a California state commemerateive quarter minted by the U.S. Mint and color-enhanced by Franklin.

One side of the limited edition collector's quarter features an image of the Silver Surfer character, while the name of the movie's Web site appears in tiny lettering.

Those finding the quarter can go to the Web site and take part in the Search 4 Silver campaign, including registering to win a trip for four to the world preem of "Surfer" in London. There's other treats offered as well, including special screenings for those finding the coin early on.

First he'll take over our money, then the world.  For other marketing stunts the Surfer is going to pull off, you can read about it here: www.variety.com/article/VR1117965794.html
