Shuri

Origin

The Princess of Wakanda, Shuri is both the sister of Black Panther, and a potential ruler of the country of Wakanda. Shuri is T'Chaka youngest child, only daughter and the only biological child Ramonda/ Queen Mother (T'Chaka 2nd wife) and he had together. From very young age Shuri has wanted to become the Black Panther. Against her mothers wishes she broke into the arena to challenge her uncle, S'yan for the title of Black Panther but was unable to get into the ring. By the time she was able to make her way to the ring, a masked fighter had already defeated the Black Panther and earned his title. When he unmasked the victor was none other than her older brother T'Challa. Her mother is disappointed that T'Challa is now a political target.

When Klaw and his men attacked Wakanda Shuri defeated Igor Stancheck (The Russian Radioactive Man) but she did so by using the the Ebony Blade. Shuri took her 1st kill hard till T'Challa promised he would personally train her hand to hand combat and for the role of the Black Panther just in case she was one day needed to lead Wakanda. Shuri is headstrong, but became considerably gifted fighter thanks to her will and want to be a Black Panther, learning from T'Challa and her other teachers.

Character Creation

Shuri was created by Ben Dunn and first appeared in a comic in Marvel Mangaverse 3, but her first appearance in the main or 616 Marvel Universe was in Black Panther issue 2 (2005).

Character Evolution

While T'Challa and Ororo were members of the Fantastic Four, American battle ships began to move closer into Wakanda territory. At the palace G’Mal tells she needs to take charge since the King is half a world away. She protests that it is not the way the protocals work, but once she hears how T'Challa then has a video conference with his advisors ( W'Kabi, S'yan, N'Gassi and others) goes she decides some action must be taken. Shuri, her cousin T'shan (S'yan's son) and their friend G’Mal discuss T'Challa actions and what actions they feel they should take. G'Mal (who body has been taken over by Cannibal) tries to convince Shuri that she should take over and lead there people in T'Challa absence, but Shuri disagrees and they settles on sneaking onto American battleships during the night. Once Shuri and G'Mal are on one of the ships they are captured by Erik Killmonger Who has taken over the now ruler/leader-less neighboring nation of Niganda with help of American backers and 21st Century weaponry.

While being hailed on the ship Cannibal/G'Mal tries to make a pass at Shuri (really where he could take over her body) she replies by saying this isn't time for that (even though she had slight romantic feeling for him). Killmonger return to cell he holding them in and Shuri challenges him to a fight, he replies by saying you need to prove yourself and then maybe you'll earn a shot, he then send a group of Niganda men for Shrui to battle with. She defeats them all with ease, the cell is then blow open by Zuri and a group of Wakandan soldiers. Once free Shuri and G'Mal talk she thanks him for helping her when she needed it and was some what shocked when he was killed by the skrull Brother Voodoo.

Major Story Arcs

During Secret Invasion Shuri and S'yan lead most of the Wakandan Army outside on the battle field and T'Challa and Ororo executed T'Challa's plan. Once Ororo gave the signal, Shuri and the rest of the Wakandan Army killed every skrull on the battle field.

In Dark Reign, Shuri is nominated to take up the Panther mantle by Queen Ororo. She successfully went through all of the trials, and achieved a special leaf that granted her access to the Panther God. However, instead of giving her access to the powers of her heritage, the Panther God furiously scolded Shuri. She was told that her jealousy towards her brother, and arrogance in her God's presence have cost her the title of Black Panther, for good. Nevertheless, when Wakanda faced complete annihilation at the hands of Morlun, Zawavari convinced Shuri that Wakanda had just one possibility to survive. The country relied too much in modern weapons and technology, as much as Shuri relied in her training skills, but both of them forgot their ancient roots. Convinced that this was her destiny, Shuri took the Panther's mantle to face Morlun and defend her brother.

Their battle taking them right into Zawavari's home, the witch doctor used his mystical powers to transport Morlun to Limbo, who's soul-saturated essence prove irresistible to Death, who released T'Challa and Storm's souls, and kept Morlun in their place. Shuri later discovers that through her self-sacrificing act to save Wakanda, that she earned the mantle of the Black Panther.

After the battles with both Death and Morlun, T'Challa discovered just how deep Doom attack went. That not only did Doom attempt to assassinate T'Challa,but he also infected most of the royal family and many top adies with his Nanites (microscopic devices that relayed everything the infected heard or said). With that knowledge T'Challa was unable to tell most of his love ones and his military of the identity attacker or enlist their aid (Shuri was left uninfected due to her Bast/Panther powers). So T'Challa, a man of science, was forced turn to magic and to go almost completely off the grid to plan to stop Doom. Shuri acted as the Princess Regent of Wakanda and The Black Panther.

DoomWar

Shuri teamed with her brother T'Challa, as well as the X-Men's Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Colossus and lead an army of Dora Milaje in an assault to gain back control of Wakanda from the Desturi. While they were successful, Dr. Doom still managed to steal the main supply of vibranium to fulfill his scheme to conquer the world. With the Fantastic Four, Storm, T'Challa, Deadpool and the remaining Dora Milaje forces, Shuri traveled and coordinated attacks all over the world in an attempt to destroy Dr. Doom's vast criminal network and recover the vibranium. While they were able to neutralize Doom's criminal network, empty his bank accounts and recover small portions of vibranium, the losses suffered were extensive. And to make matters worse, the vibranium enhanced doombot's could continuously adapt to the heroes' attacks. War Machine, coming to their aid at the secret request of Reed Richards, made a timely arrival and provided a life saving assist to Shuri and her squad of Dora Milaje. Unfortunately, they were unable to stop Doom from accessing the mystical properties of vibranium, and he became supremely powerful and took control of every object and structure across the world that contained vibranium, and used them to attack cities all over the globe. Bringing the fight directly to Doom, Shuri lead the heroes in a final assault against Doom and his forces. With the team holding their own, T'Challa executed his master plan, and used a ploy that simultaneously neutralized all of the processed vibranium on the planet and Doom's vastly enhanced power, making the metal inert and useless. Both the heroes and Shuri returned to Wakanda with the remaining portions of pure vibranium.

Klaws Of The Panther

Shuri traveled to the Savage Land to meet with Kazar to obtain the stock of savage land vibranium to help stabilize and restore Wakanda's debilitated economy. However, upon her arrival she was attacked by an unusually aggressive pack of velociraptors but is able to hold her own against them. Shanna the She-Devil intervened and tranquilized the last of the pack, and after briefly scolding Shuri for her brutal counterattacks against the dinosaurs, they traveled to Kazar's home, and found signs of a fight and that Kazar was missing. In searching his hut they found a highly advanced device that, upon their brief study if it, emitted a high pitched sound that overwhelmed Shuri and Shanna, who destroyed it. Shortly after they begin their search for Kazar, they are attacked by a small group of monkies, who were driven into an aggressive state by another high pitched sound. In the middle of the fight Zabu, who had the sound emitting device on his back, also went on the attack and goes after Shanna, but is saved by Shuri. After defeating them they arrived at the savage lands vibranium mound, and discovered that the mound is being excavated by AIM. Shanna frees the savage land dinosaurs that were caged, found and freed Kazar as well, while Shuri took on the agents of AIM, whom she easily defeated. With the AIM soldiers defeated, Kazar began to explain that Klaw, who's name shocks Shuri at the mention of it, planned to blow-up the vibranium mound. They are are suddenly attacked and stunned by a powerful sound blast. Their attacker, Ulysses Klaw - self-styled Master of Sound, made himself known and told Shuri that he was going to kill her, her entire family, and hints at using the vibranium in a sinister plot against the world.

Shuri, Shanna and Kazar engaged Klaw in a direct assault that quickly turned against them. Shuri turned the tide of battle though, attacking one of the nearby dinosaurs, which incited the dinosaurs to attack Klaw and the remnants of his AIM agents. One of the AIM agents starts the timer on a bomb, and Klaw and his forces raced to their ship to escape the blast. Shuri, who had the opportunity to usurp AIM's ship, chose to attack Klaw instead, who repelled her attack, and escaped. With two seconds left on the timer, Storm's timely arrival saved them all, frying the firing mechanisms in the bombs with an EMP to stop it. Shuri received a brief lecture from Storm, Kazar and Shanna about controlling her rage but the conversation was interrupted by a volcanic eruption caused by a sonic blast from Klaw. Storm again saved everyone. Three days later, Shuri met up with Wolverine, and explained to Logan that the lava flooded the vibranium mine in the Savage Land and that it would take years to excavate it. She explained that she came to Madripoor to get a beat on some savage land vibranium that was being sold on the black market and a potential market monopoly of the vibranium by AIM. Shuri and Wolverine followed leads they had to track down the vibranium, with Wolverine giving Shuri some much needed advise on controlling her bloodlust and rage along the way, but they remained one step behind, as each location they arrived at contained numeorus dead bodies. Separating to pick up the pace and to arrive to their next location before they lost their chance to find who was comitting the killings, Shuri's plan worked, and she arrived in time to find a group of AIM agents who immediately attacked her upon sight. Shuri quickly dispatched them, saving one of them for her and Logan to question. As the interrogation progressed the AIM agent told them of the vibranium stockpile in New York that AIM were already poised to take but before he could finish giving the information he was obliterated by a sound blast from Klaw. Wolverine and Shuri attack but they were taken down by Klaw, who escaped.

Shuri tracked another stockpile of savage land vibranium located in New York which, unfortunately, had already been acquired by A.I.M. Shuri went to the Avengers for assistance, however, the only member of the team available was Spider Man. The two joined forces and upon arrival to the location of the SLV (savage land vibranium) stockpile, they encountered a cadre of A.I.M operatives but quickly defeated them, and made several discoveries. Through interrogation, they discovered that Klaw was creating a weapon known as "The Scream". He was planning to focus the metal destroying qualities of the savage land vibranium to eliminate the security systems on every communications satellite orbiting the planet, and would then deploy the Scream - a powerful sonic wave that would shatter the concious mental resistance of everyone on the planet and would turn them into slaves of Ulysses Klaw. They also discovered that Klaw was forcing one of the A.I.M scientists to develop the technology needed to implement the Scream, or that Klaw would not reverse what he had done to the scientist's daughter. Breaking into an underground A.I.M. design lab facility, they encountered an even larger assembly of A.I.M. forces. As Shuri and Spider Man steadily defeated the A.I.M operatives Klaw attacked them. Blinded by rage Shuri proceeded to engage Klaw but is stopped by Spider Man, who told her that she is not a match for Klaw and to focus on the mission to destroy the Scream generator, while he engaged Klaw to buy her time. Begrudgingly, Shuri went further into the facility where she met the blackmailed A.I.M scientist. He explained that the savage land vibranium and the Scream generator, are not located in this facility, and that they were already in space. The scientist explained that Klaw had made his daughter into a monster named M.U.S.I.C. - Multiframe Universal Sonic Integration Codec. She was the weapon Klaw was using to enslave the world.

Spiderman was eventually overpowered by Klaw, who made a quick escape to activate the Scream and take over the world, but he bought Shuri enough time for Shuri to get the crucial information to help to progress their mission. To add to the challenge, Flea informed Shuri that the security system of the A.I.M space station Klaw hi-jacked was too advanced for them to breach. However, after Peter made a quick call to Steve Rogers, the Black Widow was called in to help. Meanwhile, Klaw made the final preparations, shunning Joya's (now known as M.U.S.I.C.) pleas to stop his conquest of world domination. Shuri and Natasha made their way to the wakandan space station, and immediately headed toward the space station, with Natasha passing along her wisdom to Shuri to help her find a way past her bloodlust and desire to kill her as the first answer to dealing with her enemies, but instead to show compassion and to try taking the moral high ground. As they approached the space station, Flea warned them they would be detected by the station's sensors, and to conceal their arrival, Flea attacked the A.I.M space station. His gamble to conceal Shuri and Natasha was successful but his shipped was severely damaged by a counter attack, and he was presumed dead. Black Widow and Shuri successfully infiltrated the space station but not before Klaw unleashed the Scream, which began to immediately effect all minds on the planet. Shuri and the Black Widow attacked Klaw but are unable to defeat him, as he continued to draw and amplify his power from M.U.S.I.C, unleashing sonic blasts and sound constructs against his foes. However, the Black Widow managed to engage Klaw for a brief moment, which allowed Shuri time to reach M.U.S.I.C , whom she was going to kill, but decided to show compassion instead. Inspired by Shuri's compassionate act, M.U.S.I.C turned on Klaw, and seemingly destroyed him. Natasha and Shuri freed M.U.S.I.C and, to Shuri's happy discovery, Flea survived Klaw's attack, and Shuri stated that she had her bloodlust under control.

Powers

Through the Heart Shaped Herb , like her brother before he lost his powers, Shuri has gained enhanced speed, agility, strength, endurance, healing and senses. She is also an extensively trained martial artist and is well versed in the use of wakandan weaponry and technology.

Alternate Realities

Earth-2301

In this reality Shuri (who was named T'Channa in this reality) turned her back on the Wakandan people and became the apprentice of the Latverian Dictator known as Victor Von Doom, after learning all she could from Victor she slayed him, took on the mantle of Doctor Doom and became Latveria's new ruler. When Shuri attacked The U.N. and killed Captain America (U.S. President Steve Rogers) along with Hawkeye and The Vision she was hunted down by her older brother T'Challa, Doctor Strange, Tigra and The Scarlet Witch.

Her identity was revealed when T'Challa ripped her iron mask off during combat and her older brother was needless to say shocked beyond all belief. Shuri took advantage of his shock and beat T'Challa down, what she failed to realize was that The Scarlet Witch had her Doombringer sword and the next thing Shuri knew the sword was driven directly through her heart. She died in The Scarlet Witch's arms shortly afterward. Appearance wise this version of Shuri was several years older than her mainstream counterpart and had a long scar (like Victor Von Doom's) running across her face.
