She was the thirteenth person to join the Legion of Super-Heroes, but before that Salu Digby was just another teenager from Earth. However Salu was born with her Imsk parents' native ability to shrink to microscopic size.  Salu grew up a very quite and shy young girl with a hard time socializing so she decided to attempt to join the newly founded Legion of Super-Heroes.

On arriving in Metropolis, she first appeared to try out for membership at the same time as Sun Boy and Bouncing Boy. At that very same try-out, Supergirl and Brainiac 5 joined the Legion, admitted right away for their impressive powers. It was partially because of her shyness and lack of confidence that she failed in her first attempt at joining. But the Legionnaire Triplicate Girl found something special about this miniature applicant  and convinced not to give up  and tryout once more. She than proved her mettle and joined as Shrinking Violet.

Once in the Legion she became an able member, even though she was still not completely comfortable around other people. Violet formed a long-distance romance with Duplicate Boy from Lallor rather than allowing herself to become close with anyone nearby. Salu maintained her long distance relationship true to Duplicate Boy, even in the face of other suitors such as Gim Allon, her fellow Legionnaire Colossal Boy. Once Violet's vacation with Duplicate Boy on Imsk was savagely interrupted by the Fatal Five, nearly slain by Validus. After being saved by the Legion, Colossal Boy expressed a sincere romantic interest in Salu, however she later chose to return to Duplicate Boy at the disappointment of Colossal Boy.

After time and with the experiences as a Legionnaire Salu became more confident and self-assured. But her progress was violently interrupted by a group of Imskian independence fighters led by Legion reject, Micro Lad. They kidnapped Salu, put her in a sensory deprivation tank, and replaced her in the Legion with a popular Holo-Vid Durlan actress named Yera. By the time the Legion caught onto the scheme, Vi had been captive for months. Traumatized by these violations on her person she emerged dramatically changed, she decided she'd never again be weak and defenseless.

Salu used her newfound anger to help her focus it on recovery, and she recouped in record time through vigorous training and physical therapy. Salu also embarked on a intense training program that made her skill in unarmed combat third among Legionnaires behind only Karate Kid, Timber Wolf and Dream Girl. She took control of her personal life as well, breaking off her relationship with Duplicate Boy, who had known of her predicament but had done nothing about it. She started to pursue men previously "unattainable," such as Sun Boy. She soon realized the shallowness of such dalliances, and began to build close friendships among her fellow Legionnaires, especially with Lightning Lass. She has since forgiven Colossal Boy for marrying the woman who helped kidnap her.

Over the years, Imsk's relationship with the United Planets has also been strained. They once threatened to secede from the U.P. over a dispute involving hunting rights. When Earth's solar system was ravaged by a mysterious shrinking plague, the U.P. accused Imsk and caused tension between Shrinking Violet and her fellow Legionnaires. They eventually discovered that the plague was engineered by the evil Dr. Regulus.

Re-Boot Origin

In current continuity, Shrinking Violet is also known as Atom Girl, a myth to all but the founding Legion members. She was considered a joke by the second wave of Legionnaires, until Brainiac 5 revealed her in the battle against Elysion of Terror Firma. She says she was exploring Brainiac 5's microverse and simply lost track of time. Invisible Kid used her name as a cover up to veil his tracks while spying on Brainiac 5. Subsequently, she assaulted Invisible Kid and after suspending him over the city, forgave him. She seems to quite like the image this gives her of being slightly crazy. She is fiercely loyal to Brainiac 5. Atom Girl overreacts to comments about her size and appears to feel hurt about appearing small in the eyes of the other Legionnaires.

Powers and Abilities

Don't look up: In giant form as LeViathan
Violet has the natural ability to vary her size as all natives of the planet Imsk do genetically. This ability to shrink down to sub-atomic size made Violet an excellent secret operative on missions, never being noticed by those around her if she wished. In post- Zero Hour continuity, after her teammate the original Leviathan's death, the Emerald Eye was drawn to Violet and bestowed her with his meta-human power to grow to giant sizes as well. In her current Atom Girl incarnation, she does not appear to possess this growth power and has returned to primarily shrinking once again.

Violet also has had rigorous training in unarmed combat from greats like Karate Kid and Timberwolf, making her a deadly combatant when also utilizing her size powers. Violet also has been given a Legion Flight Ring which is controlled by its wearer's willpower. The ring is made from Nth metal qualities and acts as a mini-computer, allowing flight, navigation, and communications.

Shrinking Violet appears in the Legion of Super-Heroes animated series, voiced by actress Kari Wahlgren. She is shown as being quite petite even at full size, and has white skin and violet hair and eyes. She wears a costume that incorporates both the classic green miniskirt and the downward-pointing arrows of her 70's costume from comic book continuity. There are hints of a possible romantic relationship between her and Brainiac 5 in the series.
