The future title, "Superman's girlfriend Lois Lane" got a try out in issues #9 and #10 of Showcase, when Lois stepped in as the lead feature. The debut story in this issue, "The Girl in Superman's past" by writer Jerry Coleman and artist Al Plastino, introduced Lois Lane to Superman's old flame Lana Lang. After some initial friction, the two inquisitive women realized they had a common curiosity: the strange parallels between Clark Kent and Superman. Lois and Lana began a friendly competition to see which of them Superman liked more and set "traps" to test his preference. Their schemes became progressively more outlandish, but Superman could not be outwitted. Superman similarly played Lois and "Con" Conners off against each other to protect his identity in the story called, "The New Lois Lane", while Lois dreamed of being Superman's wife in "Mrs Superman."
