Around the World in 80 Minutes!
I think one of the highlights of this issue is the story Around the world in 80 minutes. I won’t say anything to spoil the story, because it is the best I have read out of all three issues of the Flash comics I have read. However, I will say that Barry had just exited the theater after watching a production of Around the world in 80 days with Iris and is determined to find out how long it would take him to go around the world. Now, this isn’t a story about him just running around, because that would take about 8 seconds or 8 slides. It is about Barry going around and helping people. It’s just a cool story. It has pirates, pyramids and so much more (and plus the cover actully seems to relate to the story!)
Side Note regarding the Around Around the World Story
I wanted to add, there is a reason why the writers chose this story. Two years before in 1956, there was a movie adaptation of Around the World in 80 Days. It was a very popular adaptation of Jules Verne's story. In fact, it won over 70 to 80 awards! It was just a popular film back then. So, it makes sense that they would try to spung off that by making the Flash do the same! See there is method to the madness!
Mr. Element
I wasn’t as crazy about Mr. Element. I am really surprised he became such a popular villain (well, popular enough to have 103 appearances), but it might be that he became more entertaining when he became Doctor Alchemy. I mean, his origin story is (to borrow a phrase) “Meh”. If this was the only story in the comic, then I would say you could miss this issue and not miss anything. I figure we’ll see a better story based on what the character’s bio says. Should be interesting how they improved such a character…
Conclusion
This is an alright issue. If you found a copy of this issue with only with Around the World in 80 Minutes, then you would have found a great issue. I’m just not crazy about this element guy. The first story is very entertaining (at least for me), so there that reason why you should pick it up!)
