Will we ever see a live-action movie?

I feel like it has been quite a while since we heard any new information on an upcoming live action Akira. The last time we did though was a report that the upcoming film had gained two screenwriters that were set to work on the project. We finally have some more news regarding the film from screenwriter Gary Whitta who spoke in a recent press conference. After being asked about the 'Akira' film (Whitta was the original screenwriter on the project) he indicated that it has been a year since he worked on it last, and that any news regarding the upcoming film he heads to the internet just like everybody else.

"...I haven't worked on it for about a year," says Whitta, "...The version I worked on was about going back to the source and doing the manga version. We were going to adapt the whole six-episode graphic novel."

Apparently though, he did give us an idea regarding what the script would be like, which was based on the original manga. Whitta indicated that when he wrote the original script, he got much of his information from notes diectly from manga writer Katsuhiro Otomo.

"We got notes from [Otomo] and we kept in touch, but we never had a formal meeting or anything. The script I worked on was very, very preliminary. We did a couple of drafts of the script but, when I was there at least, it never got wrapped up to the point where I think he would get really hands on."

Hearing that Otomo was involved in scripting the movie script (ever so slightly) is still pretty awesome. However, based on the last report which we gave you guys in September, the screenplay had already changed hands and was being scripted by screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man). This begs the question, will the current screenplay start over completely from scratch, or have Fergus and Ostby taken Whitta's draft and simply revised it? What would you like to see? Do you want to see a live-action 'AKIRA' film? If so, who would you like to see cast as Shotaro Kaneda and Tetsuo

I think they could pull it off but only they went with  a live format of the smarter original version not the watered down weaker version of the 2nd.  It was Akira for dummies

They need to leave Akira as it is and not make it into a live movie.

I think it would have been a better idea to have done a live action Ghost in The Shell.. Akira is too iconic.

It would be great IF a live-action movie gets produced but only if its done with respect towards the original animated movie in terms of plot and action.  I can only imagine the FX involved, but again, I'd imagine CGI would play an integral part.

I'd be interested to say the least.  Akira is one of my personal favorite animated AND SF themed movies, so I'd only hope it gets done right if it ever gets done at all.  Looks like we shouldn't hold our breath.

I agree with Captain Rage to an extent; I think a Ghost In the Shell movie would translate better into a live-action film.

I'd love to see Neil Blomkamp (District 9) write/direct this movie. Akira would be awesome to be seen done realistically, rather than an over the top popcorn movie like Transformers.

Exactly, far too iconic. They should just let it be. Of course there's a small chance it might be good, but I wouldn't bet anything of any value on that...

I agree with you. The things that make anime movies popular are the settings and atmosphere done by the Japanese. Americans are all about oh we need to Americanize it so people can relate. If the anime is popular enough to make it to America it is obvious people dont mind a movie from another culture. I just hope if it does become Americanized that New York isnt the setting. I'm really tired of seeing New York get destroyed in every mass destruction movie.
