Origin

Short-Fuze's real name is Mark W. Friestadt and he was born in Chicago, Illinois. He comes from a family with a strong military background; his father and grandfather were both sergeants. His file notes that he enjoys abstract mathematics and can plot artillery azimuths and triangulation's in his head. He's known to lose his temper from time to time which contributes to his code name as much as his military specialty.

Short-Fuze's military specialty is artillery and he serves as the Joes' mortar soldier. His specialized education includes artillery school, Engineer School, and Advanced Infantry Training. He holds the rank of corporal E-4.

Creation

Short-Fuze was first introduced in 1982 as a part of the Hasbro toy line. His story and character were developed for the Marvel series G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero by Larry Hama.

Character Evolution

Short Fuze's first appearance is in "G.I. Joe: A real American Hero" #1. Although he appears in thirteen issues and has taken part in significant engagements, he rarely has a large role in any story. He, along with the original members, are assigned administrative duties by General Austin and only takes part in the invasions of Springfield and Cobra Island along with the other members of the team.

Short-Fuze appeared in the Sunbow G.I. Joe animated series. He appeared in several issues including the mini-series' A Real American Hero and Revenge of Cobra. He was often paired with another Joe, Steeler, in most of his appearances. He was voiced by Frank Welker.

Toys

Short-Fuze was released by Hasbro in 1982 as a part of the original G.I. Joe team. He was re-released in 1983 with the new swivel arm grip. Short-Fuze has only had three releases and his name has been changed on the file card every time. Sometimes he is referred to as Eric W. Freistadt, other times Mark W. Bernstan, and still other times Mark W. Freistadt.
