During the Academy days, Shikamaru was well known as the student with the second lowest marks, the lowest being Naruto. He was famous for skipping school to look at the clouds and sleeping through every lecture. After he graduated the Academy, he was assigned to Team 10 with Ino Yamanaka and Choji Akimichi and Asuma Sarutobi, and the latter wondered about the low grades.

He frequently played Shikamaru in Go and Shogi, and no matter what he tried, he could never win. Finally, he disguised an IQ test as a series of puzzles. He was shocked to discover that Shikamaru had an IQ over 200, far exceeding that of a genius. Shikamaru revealed that his low marks were only a result of his finding schoolwork to troublesome. His lazy attitude was the leading factor of much of the thing people thought of him.

Chuunin Exams

Though little is known of his earlier missions, they appeared to be successful, as Asuma recommended the entire team for the Chunnin Exam. In the Forest of Death, Shikamaru and the rest of Team 10, minus Asuma, had trouble getting the scroll that they needed, due to Ino being to scared, Choji being a follower, and Shikamaru being to lazy. In the end though, Ino forced Shikamaru to fight as the three of them appeared to save Sakura

from the sound ninja. Shikamaru revealed his specialty to be his shadow, which he connected with Dosu Kinuta’s shadow, allowing him control over the lead sound ninja. He then caught Ino as she used her technique to takeover Kin’s body. Though Shikamaru was unable to control the connecton of shadows for more then five minutes, and his Chakra slowly began running out, he was saved by the timely arrival of Neji and Tenten. He and the rest of his teams efforts were also enough of a delay for Sasuke to awaken and drive off the three sound ninja. Shikamaru proceeded to wake up Naruto wth a kick to the head.

He is next seen in the preliminaries for the third part of the exam. He is paired in a fight against the sound ninja Kin. She sends needles at him with bells to throw off his thoughts. He is able to connect with her though by disguising his shadow as the shadow of the bells. He then throws a shuriken at Kin, which she is forced to mimic, before beginning to dodge backwards.

At this point, he separated from Kin’s shadow and she continued dodging backwards, right into a wall. He then exits the ring. When Asuma assures Choji that he will get in the way of the match if anything goes wrong, Shikamaru silently points out that Asuma was the only one to not help out when Neji was about to kill Hinata.

Shikamaru is later seen at the Konohagakure hospital, visiting Choji, who, after losing his match, got sick after eating to much food. There, he meets Naruto, and Shikamaru follows Naruto, who is going to visit Lee. When they enter, they discover Gaara,

who is about to kill Lee, who he already permanently crippled in the preliminaries. Shikamaru quickly captures Gaara in his shadow paralysis jutsu. Naruto punches Gaara, which also transfers damage to Shikamaru. Gaara tells the two about his past to pass the time that Shikamaru’s technique works. As Shikamaru’s technique breaks, Guy entered the room, and Gaara left, feeling hate at the bond that Guy and Lee have.

Chuunin Exams Finals

Shikamaru observes Naruto's match with Neji, and finds it impressive that Naruto has progressed so far. When his match comes up, he feels sad about having to fight another girl, Temari, and prepares to resign and not even enter the ring when Naruto pushes him into the ring. Shikamaru proceeds to

lie there as his Temari prepares to attack. She sends a huge burst of wind, but as the dust clears, Shikamaru is standing on two kunai he had thrown into the wall out of reach of Temari's initial attack. Temari sends another attack at him, but he dodges and hides in the trees. He then wonders why he has to be put into so many troublesome situations. He then surveys the field, and appears to formulate a plan.

He jumps into the shadow of the rings wall, missing his jacket, and attempts to paralyze her. She dodges, and realizes how far his shadow can go. She draws a line with her fan. Shikamaru delays with a thinking pose(placing his fingers together at his stomach level) , and then tries to paralyze Temari again. She realizes that as the battle continues, his shadow will grow longer, and then prepares for a second attack when her brother, Kankuro, tells her to watch out, she looks down to see another shadow descending from above. She dodges and looks up to see Shikamaru's jacket descending from the air, a Kunai tied to its bottom as to make it descend faster. She then dodges the shadow and stands out of its reach as she prepares for the final attack, but as she is about to release it, she realizes that she can't move. Shikamaru had suceeded in using his technique. He allows Temari to see how he did it by letting her look behind her. She discovers that he had used a hole made by Naruto in the previous match. Shikamaru then makes both of them walk towards eachother. Temari flinched as he raised for a final blow. He then resigned, broke their link, and left the ring, saying that he no longer had enough Chakra to win the fight.

Shikamaru falls asleep after his match, but wakes up when Kabutoput everyone else in the stadium to sleep. He then pretends to sleep, but is woken up by Kakashi's dog, Pakkun biting his leg. Shikamaru attempted to shake him off, as Sakura called him completely lazy. He then is forced to follow Naruto and Sakura as they pursued Sasuke, who was himself pursuing Kankuro and Gaara. Pakkun realized that they were being followed by six ninjas. Shikamaru stayed behind. He then began to leave fake footprints, but Sakura believed that he had run off. Naruto still believed in Shikamaru though. As he expressed his trust in Shikamaru, the ninja's were stopped by Shikamaru's Shadow Paralysis Jutsu. He only gets five of them though, as the sixth sat concealed, waitig for the Jutsu to wear off so that he could be killed without harming the other five. As Shikamaru's Jutsu wore off, a ninja decended from above, but it was not the other sound Ninja, but Asuma. Asuma then proceeded to kill the other five ninja's with his Chakra blades.

Sasuke Retrieval

After the trouble with the Chunin Exams dispersed Shikamaru gets chosen to become a chunin. Tsunade then tells Shikamaru that Sasuke ran with the Sound 4.He has to set up a team. But he has to include Naruto. The first one he picks is Choji. Next Kiba comes along. They then go past Neji and Rock Lee. Unfortunately Rock Lee can't go because he just had his surgery.

As they sneak up upon they find a container but no Sasuke. Neji uses his Byakugan and says that Sasuke is the container. They then are caught by the Sound Four. As each team face each other Shikamaru secretly uses the Shadow Possession Jutsu. But Sakon breaks the jutsu and then Jirobi encases them in a rock dome.

With his quick thinking, Shikamaru tells Kiba to attack the walls using Beast Over Fang Jutsu. Then Neji is told to use the Byakugan to locate the place where there is the least amount of chakra. Choji then uses his Human Boulder to break through the wall freing them all. The team then leaves Choji to fight Jirobou while the rest go after Sasuke and the other Sound Four. While they are going after the next three everyone has doubts of Choji's ability but Shikamaru is confident that he can beat Jiroubo.

They caught up with the three of the Sound Four. Shikamaru tries to transform into

Jirobou and grab Sasuke but fails when he doesn't retaliate when Tayuya of the Sound Four insults him. Each of them attack Kidomaru, the six armed ninja of the Sound Four who is left to deal with them while the other two leave, but they are all caught in his webs. After a surprise attack from Naruto, Neji frees Kiba and Shikamaru. Neji stays to fight Kidoumaru, while Kiba and Akamaru, Shikamaru, and Naruto go after the two ninja of the Sound Four.

Shikamaru then fights Tayuya, while Kiba fights Sakon, and Naruto fights a fifth of the Sounf Four named Kimimaro. In their fight Tayuya goes into her first cursed marked form and summons three giants. After a few attacks from the giants he figures out she is using her flute to send modular frequencies to control them. He knows that he isn't good in

music so he can't predict their moves. She then plays different notes in which these giants open there mouth. From them comes what she call material ghosts. In their first attack they take a bite of his physical energy which hurts is arm. He figures this out and concludes he has only nine moves. The first is a tagged kunai which is blocked. A giant then comes to protect her. The next is a kunai above her but hits a tree. The next five attacks are with kunais which are blocked. Shikamaru comes from hiding and throws a kunai which hits the second kunai which some sort of bomb was attached to.

It is dropped near her and light comes out and when all three giants comes to attack him he uses his Shadow Possesion Jutsu to capture them. Tayuya dispels them believing that was his last move. But it was only a fake out which Shikamaru explains when he catches her in his Shadow Possesion. Tayuya then turns into her second Cursed Seal form. Her hair becomes longer and her skin becomes a redish brown and her bandages fall from her head and horns come out. Her chakra increased dramatically and Shikamaru quickly uses his Shadow Strangler Jutsu. She stops the attack and plays notes on her flute stopping the possesion. Shikamaru sees pins in himself and can't move. This is only a dillusion. When Tayuya comes in for an attack Shikamaru breaks his finger with his shadow and comes out. He was only pretendng to bee in pain. He posseses her shadow and uses the Shadow Strangler Jutsu again reveling the closer the person is the stronger the jutsu and comes for a punch. As he comes for another punch Tayuya blocks it and can see his shadow possesion isn't fully working. As he tries to finish the strangler jutsu it slowly starts to revert back but doesn't stop knowing if he would he would be "hammered." He tries to calm himself down figuring no one going come to his rescue.

Allies of the Leaf: We're Sand Shinobi!

The Shadow Possesion sops and as Tayuya comes in for a stab with a kunai a wind tunnel attacks her. After that Temari appears infront of Shikamaru. Tayuya stands on another tree branch. Temari tells him that they were sent on a mission. He informs her about Tayuya's flute as she plays. Temari uses the Wind Sythe Jutsu, she sends a powerful wind at Tayuya blocking the flute's melody and chopping the tree's around. He explains the situation. Buit when he talks about his opinion she says she can handle it. SHe draws blood on her fan and uses the Summoning Blade Jutsu which summons a fast moving weasel with a blade. It cuts the trees around and it attacks Tayuya ending the battle.

Personality

Shikamaru is calm and collected and lazy at times. Shikamuru is very easy-going and can really get on Naruto's nerves. In the chunun exam in the last part he won against Temari. He Quited. Naruto was so ferious because he did not understand. Shikamaru says hw was yo tired and he does not have a lot of chalkra left. But, thier is times when Shikamaru isn't lazy when they went to rescue Sasuke. Shikamaru says:

"I know I seem lazy at times, but not today because now im responsible for all your lives. I really did not like Sasuke but, he is part of our village and I have to protect him thats our leaf way"

Everyone is surprised of how he was not being lazy. Shikamaru can be annoying and lazy but his a great leader. For that he became a chunin, before shipudden. Shikamaru is nice sometimes too, he's great to he's beat friend Choji they been best friends for years. Shikamaru is a great ninja.

Powers/Techniques

"Shadow Imitation" where he extends his shadow to connect to his opponent's shadow. By doing this, he can force their bodies to mirror his movements. "Shadow Neck Bind" where after using his Shadow Imitation, he can cause a hand-shaped shadow to reach up the opponent's body and choke them. "Shadow Sewing" where he extends tendrils from his shadow that can bind or stab his opponents. He can also use these to snare items.

He'd gain Asuma's special trench-knives which take on their user's attributes, allowing him to immobilize his opponents by stabbing their shadows.

There are limits to his techniques, however. The range is limited and lasts only 5 minutes, and those with enough chakra can resist it. He also cannot use his techniques if it's too dark because he requires shadows.
