Dense, But Worth It
SHIELD is the smartest Marvel comic that I fear too few people are reading. Jonathan Hickman is quickly making his mark in Marvel history with creative, intricate, and very cool stories.
I admit that this book is up my alley precisely because of its subject matter (natural philosophers, Renaissance men, and complex, secret cabals), but anyone looking for a mature (with respect to complexity, not blood/sex) story should catch up on Vol. 1 and pick up this issue.
It goes without saying that Hickman's writing is superb, even if Michelangelo feels a little too much like a Dr. Manhattan ripoff. Learning just how deep the seeds he's planted seem to go feels satisfying to those of us who have read the first volume of SHIELD.
Weaver's art continues to be great, but I'd be remiss in not mentioning Kevin Mellon's great art in the back of the book.
You can start the series here, but I wouldn't recommend it. SHIELD Vol 1 is collected in a trade by now, so go back and read that before you keep on with this fascinating series.
