The world's first consulting detective
Sherlock Holmes, who first appeared in publication in 1887, is the most famous detective in literature, and one of a handful of legendary and/or fictional characters, among them Superman, Mickey Mouse, & Robin Hood, that have become so well known their names, and a few “facts” about them are known even by people in remote areas of the world who have never read the stories about them, or seen any of the films, televisions productions or plays about them.
Created by Scotsman and physician Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes is the worlds first "consulting detective" who though his powers of observation and detection is able to gain information about people and events from the most minimal of evidence. He was also given flaws like an addiction to cocaine.
That today Sherlock Holmes is also in the public domain has only helped keep him and his chronicler Dr. Watson in the public’s imagination.
As such he has appeared in quite a few comic’s over the decades, from Classic Illustrated, a number of British “Boy’s Own” adventure comics, to such diverse versions as being one of the people who trained a young Bruce Wayne, to the identical twin of Dracula, to a genetically altered human sent back in time to battle robots from space, to someone secretly running a conspiracy to control the world!
This listing is for those appearances of Sherlock Holmes that are closer to the original literary creation, and not the more… specialized versions found at DC, in Planetary, or other venues.
