Tasmia Mallor is the latest in a line of mighty tribal champions from her desert  homeworld Talok VIII. She has the power to project darkness. Like all Talokians she has blue skin and pointed ears and has survived on the harsh desert terrain of Talok VIII and kept very true to her peoples beliefs and rituals. She and her younger cousin Grev received their powers from their ancestors, whose spirits reside in a mysterious and taboo cave on Talok VIII. As they entered the cavern their ancestors spoke to them, casting a picth black cloud which acted on their genetic heritage and unleashed their powers.

As her ancestors before her from the past thousand years, Tasmia is a hereditary shadow champion of Talok VIII. Her 20th century ancestors, were also shadow champions and members of the interstellar police force L.E.G.I.O.N. In this extended history of ancestral champions, Tasmia trained extremely hard and long hours to assert her status.

When the Fatal Five attacked and conquered Talok VIII, Tasmia was off world and not able to defend her people. However Tasmia took advantage of this situation and asked for the aid of the Legion of Super-Heroes, leading them back to her home-world. Together they defeated the forces of the Fatal Five, the Legion making Tasmia a temporary Legionnaire in the line of battle. Choosing to accept a permanent membership on the Legion, she joined as Shadow Lass and was the first Legionnaire to win membership though battle.

Her cousin Grev, who also wielded the shadow power thanks to his bloodline, would go on to join the Legion Academy as Shadow Kid, though aware that he could never join the team whilst she was an active member due to the rules regarding members having the same powers. Both Tasmia and Grev both hoped that he would gain the skills needed to be better prepared to protect Talok in Tasmia's absence.

After joining, she became romantically involved with Lar Gand and eventually married him. This was after he was mortally wounded fighting the Time Trapper as part of a major conspiracy to avenge Superboy's death at the Trapper's hands. Their marriage was rocky for many years despite their strong feelings for each other, and Tasmia went into mourning when Lar Gand died.

The mourning was temporarily, as he returned to her, inhabited briefly by the Time Trapper's essence, until a cataclysmic battle erased the Trapper from existence and this completely rewrote reality causing to lose her husband again.

Tasmia, like her ancestors before her, would be able to tap into and unknown and ancient connection to the darkness in the universe.  She recieved the gift when she went to her Ancestral caves, now she too could cast and control vast amounts of absolute darkness.

This darkness is able to engulf large amounts of space almost instantly creating an absolute which few (like Sensor Girl) could penetrate with their vision. Tasmia is also able to control the way she shapes her darkness, from a large cloud to a tight beam of concentrated shadows. Those surrounded in the shadows of her darkness would be deprived of their senses, this lack of senses could drive many to a rampant fear.

Tasmia also is a superb athlete and fighter who learned her fighting skills originally from her native people as their chosen champion. She would grow as a warrior due to her training with such expert fighters as Karate Kid and other Legionnaires.

As a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, Tasmia had access to a Legion Flight Ring. The capacities of a Flight Ring, which is powered by its wearers willpower, allows the ability of flight. It also acts as a signal device and a navigational compass as part of a micro computer inside the ring.
