I almost titled this 'The Secret Avengers' Secrets'
I almost titled this 'The Secret Avengers' Secrets'

Ahhhh… elusive mainstream press recognition. The amount of times you see a paper like USA Today reporting on an actual comics storyline (rather than, say, a movie adaptation) is a rare enough occurrence that the novelty never really wears off. Why, I can even remember when an eight-year-old lil’ Tommy P was so excited to see a double-page write-up of GENERATION X in ’94.

Anyway, with some choice quotes from Ed Brubaker, the article outlines how SECRET AVENGERS will be Steve Rogers' strike team for some covert ops. It seems like the SA’s MO is going to be a lot like the Thunderbolts’ was under DARK REIGN, although they’ll be working for good, not evil. Also, with the exception of Beast, astute fans may have noticed that its line-up - - War Machine, Valkyrie, Moon Knight, Black Widow, Nova, Ant-Man & Sharon Carter - - consists of characters with military backgrounds. And that isn’t a coincidence.

Brubaker also offers an interesting behind-the-pages tidbit about the last few years of Cap storylines. Apparently, Steve Rogers was supposed to be return only six issues after his assassination in CIVIL WAR. However, the buzz the event created was so great (why, I think it might have even been reported in USA TODAY) and the sales were so high, Marvel asked him to extend the storyline. Luckily, he was already having a bout of inspiration - - enough to plot three years worth of Rogers-less Cap stories.

I recall that something similar happened with the DEATH OF SUPERMAN, as well. It was originally meant to be a three month storyline, but the response was so overwhelming that DC editorial decided to explore all the adventures of the Eradicator, Cyborg Superman, Superboy and Steel. Seems like comics history repeats itself.

Damn, I actually like Cap's new duds in that artwork.  Also, that's a pretty fun and ecclectic team.  If written correctly, this will be a winner.

Of all the new Avengers series starting up, this is the one I'm really excited for. Especially with Brubaker writing.

As a huge Defenders fan, I wonder why they couldn't use the Defenders name. This seems like a very Defenders team and with Steve Rogers at the helm a better chance at success. Just wonderin'. Still I'm picking it up.

Steve's new costume is pretty cool. Also, with Brubaker writing this I can't see how it could go wrong. Plus I love that Moon Knight is in this.

Cuz Defenders doesn't really sell, but the Avengers brand does. I'm surprised the Thunderbolts aren't renamed as the Thunderbolt Avengers or something.

Brubaker does an amazing Cap (whether it's Rogers or Bucky). This is definitely something I'm going to be picking up. One of the things that is bugging me is Steve's new....hero name. Captain Rogers? All that makes me think of is Mister Rogers. What happened to the Super Soldier name I thought he was going to be saddled with? That wouldn't have been THAT bad. I guess they're trying to turn Steve into another Nick Fury, so they're staying away from the more colourful names.

This looks like a good title, but I've got 1 question.........

Isn't Moon Knight sort of an odd choice? I haven't kept up with his most recent series, but the last time I saw him he was freakin' insane.

He's trying to control his mental instability enough to become a real hero and not to succumb to the incarnation of Khonshu that he see's influences.

I'm seriously debating over whether to get this title or not. I'm a huge Steve, War Machine, and Beast fan, but Nova and Valykrie aren't characters I'm too interested in.

    @Mutant X:
Nova got a serious overhaul in his series. After Annihilation, he became a powerhouse and a good hero in his own right. If you haven't read any of the Nova books, give them a try.

Valkyrie, on the other hand, is the one I agree with you on. Brunhilda's not a bad character, she just hasn't been interesting in years.

This line up just dosent seem to work for me. I am not to crazy about the Steve not being Cap to start with. I love Moon knight and Valkyrie.  Nova and Widow are cool too but it is such an odd mix. Heck they dont even look cool as a group.

Finally, an Avengers title I am hoping to read.  Like a lot of others, not to keen on Steve Rogers' costume, but I like this line-up.  Moon Knight and Nova FTW for me.

To be honest after seeing the line up I'm most intrigued by beast being on the list because for the most part I see him a brain and nothing more but he is on a team of people who have not only been seen battle they have taken lives when they needed to and done what was needed to get their jobs done. It will be a treat to see whether or not this will affect how effective he is or whether or not he will change.

Also I've been meaning to ask around is this Nova from Ann. War or are they just forgetting all that lol?

I don't really think so, if you break down every member and what they bring to the table it makes since.  I see him as the wolverine lite of the team, not so vicious but just enough when the time call for it

I'm really excited for this series too - I actually like the new Steve Roger's uniform.  I'm not too worried about what they call him (as long as it is not Buck - get it?) I've got faith in Brubaker (unless it is a mutant title).  I am really interested in seeing Steve develop a new persona without the overhead of "Captain America."  However, I suspect being the head of the new SHIELD (or whatever it will be called) will way just as heavy on him.  Regardless, love that Brubaker is writing this AND that Bucky Cap is still finding his way under Brubaker's stewardship.  I think this has the potential to be my favorite Avengers title.
