Superhuman Bar fights, bike chases with demonic riders...glorious
I still can’t stop praising Rick Remender’s secret avengers run. He has everything that makes comics fun to read and even outshines the supposed “main” avengers books written by bendis by a long shot. An action packed issue with awesome results
The issue picks up from last time as venom goes after Taskmaster who has the third and final crown. Without anyone knowing what the hell is wrong with the alien symbiotic starts to get easily handled by the skull guy with photographic reflexes that copies spider-man’s moves. But luckily our peter parker bully turned awesome black ops spider-man gets saved by ant-man who gets inside taskmaster’s head and starts messing him up. Things get worse now the moment taskmaster flees as he offers one million dollars to anyone who kills venom…..in a super villain bar….and no piano guy playing western bar fight music while they are at it.....damn it. We then move to hawkeye and valkyrie who chase taskmaster with the most awesome thing ever. A small capsule that turns into a full size customized hawkeye bike made by Hank Pym…..that alone should be enough to atone for the whole creating a ever evolving killer robot. They go after the skull guy in a awesome chase where the evil green ghost rider joins the chase as he takes down valkyrie and leaves hawkeye in a corner in a parking lot rooftop. So how will earth’s mightiest archer escape this one? By going full speed off of the roof and shoot a bunker busting arrow right at the ghost rider knockoff's face...god that's awesome. We move on to Max Fury in his HQ with whiplash receiving the wolf crown from taskmaster. Obviously the best way to repay the dude who has given you the last thing you need to take over the world or something like that is to shoot him multiple times so Max does so….what a di(censored)…..then the three crowns combine to create “The Abyss” a even stronger crown. Luckily our heroes arrive to stop him while hawkeye turns retarded and instead of shooting the boss, he shoots the one not about to put on an all mighty object on its head while trying to warn them that not nick fury is insane. As Max is about to do his villain monologue he finds out that it doesn’t work, because he is a robot and doesn’t have a soul, it’s completely useless for him as hawkeye punches him and turns out he kinda knew of this as venom teases the tin-man without a soul. The issue ends with the team been blasted by a purple ray, revealed to be taskmaster who picked up the crown and now has the power of probably a god if he can manipulate all of the baddies in the city.
The Good:
Love how remender picks up the pieces from the storyline that has been running since issue one in the first place. He actually made me get invested in the whole crown thing when at first with other writers it did not. Also the action here was great as we get to see a semi-classic venom fighting in a bar and the bike chase made this a very nice issue…something I wish the other avengers title should do more (hope hickman will finally bring the awesomeness the avengers main title need)
The Bad:
Isn't it great when you pay 3.99 for a comic that doesn’t piss you off at all? I know I do….well except with the only disappointment of not be able to see venom face off all those villains in a good old western bar fight
Overall: 5/5
This issue is just perfect and enjoyable. With a lot of action it continues this story arc that has been nothing but enjoyable. This is the avengers title everyone should be reading or at least prioritize over the rest. Trust me, you will become a remender fan quickly and will feel very encouraged to pick up Uncanny Avengers in October, he knows what he is doing.
