Scott is the titular hero from the graphic novel series "Scott Pilgrim". He must defeat Ramona Flowers' seven evil ex-boyfriends in order to date her. He plays bass guitar in the band Sex Bob-omb. Scott is recognized as the best fighter in the province of Ontario, Canada. Specifically, he makes his home in Toronto.

Biography

Early Life

Scott Pilgrim (Age: 23) is one of three children (younger sister, Stacey and younger brother, Lawrence, who has only been referenced off-panel).  He moved to Northern Ontario in high school, where he met Lisa Miller and Kim Pine, who was assigned as his history project partner.  During a conflict in which boys from a rival school came and beat up the entire student body and took Kim hostage, Scott fought through the "bosses," ultimately defeating their leader, Simon, and rescuing Kim.  The two began to date soon after, Scott asking Kim to play drums in his and Lisa's garage band, "Sonic & Knucles."Eventually, Scott moved away with his family to Toronto and began college at the University of Toronto.  There he met Wallace Wells, Stephen Stills, who was dating Julie Powers, roommate to Natalie V. Adams.  Natalie, Stephen, and Scott began a band, "kid chameleon."  However, Natalie began to change, exchanging her anime and figurines for "good music" and taking greater charge of the band.  The band grew to be considerably large and popular, to Scott's protest, who wanted to play for playing's sake rather than to get a recording contract.  Eventually, Natalie, now calling herself "Envy" (N.V.) to dump him and kick him out of the band.  The breakup devastated Scott.

Life After College/'Precious Little Life"

Scott, now 23, eventually moves in with Wallace (title: Cool gay roommate) in a one-room basement apartment.  Maintaining friendships with Kim Pine, whom he ran into living in downtown Toronto, and Stephen Stills, he plays bass in their new band, "Sex Bob-Omb."

Still carrying baggage from is breakup with Envy, Scott begins a relationship with Chinese high school student, Knives Chau (Age: 17), but found himself intrigued by a mysterious "ninja delivery girl" who would often appear in his dreams and who was another friend of Julie's.  Scott eventually learned that she was Ramona Flowers, an American ex-patriot working as a delivery girl in Toronto who uses "sub-space highways" that go through the subconscious to travel to her various locations.  He and Ramona went on a date, cementing their romantic interest in one another.  However, Ramona carries baggage from her previous relationships, in the form of "Seven Evil Exes."   While playing a concert at a local music venue, Scott is confronted by Matthew Patel, Ramona's first evil ex, who was sent by the mysterious and unrevealed "Gideon."  He states that in order to date Ramona, Scott must defeat each of her seven evil exes.  Matthew summons the power of his demon hipster chicks, but is defeated by Scott, leaving behind some GP.

"Vs. The World"

Ramona and Scott begin dating, but Wallace issues an ultimatum where Scott must break up with Knives (who has remade herself as a hipster girl who listens to "good music") or else Wallace will tell Ramona about his relationship with Knives.  Scott breaks up with Knives, who is devastated.  He then introduces Ramona to Kim, Stephen, and Stephen's roommate, Young Neil Nordegraf.  Realizing that Scott is dating someone new and still in love with him, Knives attempts to make herself more "indie" to win Scott back.

Scott begins to train with Wallace, recognizing that he must fight Ramona's second evil ex, former pro-skater-turned-actor Lucas Lee.  Lucas reveals that while they were dating, Ramona cheated on him and broke his heart.  Scott is no match for the buff Lucas, but manages to defeat him by daring him to skate down the rails of Casa Loma in Toronto.  The accumulating speed is too much for Lucas to survive and he is defeated, leaving behind a bunch of change and an unusable Mithril Skateboard as a video game "dropped item."

Meanwhile, Stacey and Ramona are confronted by Knives, who comes to the realization that  Scott was cheating on her with Ramona.  The two clash, Ramona unaware of who Knives is, and Ramona easily defeats her.  Knives flees the scene, stating that she will win Scott back.

Envy Adams has made it big in a Montreal art-school band called "The Clash at Demonhead."  Her band is scheduled to play at Lee's, a local and popular music venue.  Envy calls Scott personally to ask Sex Bob-Omb to open for them.  The band reluctantly agrees, recognizing that they "do kind of suck" and "badly."

At the venue, they meet Kim's friend Holly, and her gay roommate Joseph.  They also discover that Knives has now started dating Young Neil.  Watching The Clash at Demonhead play, Ramona realizes that the bass player, Todd Ingram, is one of her evil exes.

"The Infinite Sadness"

After the set, Envy invites the group to hang out in the back room.  Envy (who is dating Todd) is aware of Scott's involvement with Ramona and tells Scott that he cannot defeat Todd and that he'll have to stop dating Ramona.  She then humiliates a star-eyed Knives (who idolizes Envy), causing Scott to say that Envy has changed from being a nice person that he once knew.  Scott attempts to attack Todd, but is easily defeated by Todd's vegan-based superpowers.  They attempt another challenge, which ends in a tie.  Meanwhile, Scott and Ramona talk to Wallace, who met a boy at a club called Mobile, who teaches Wallace a psychic trick using chi.

At the night of the big performance, the group learns that Todd has been cheating on Envy with the band's drummer, Lynette Guycott, a ninja with a bionic arm.  Envy and Ramona have a conversation where Envy reveals that she knows about Ramona's mysterious past with Gideon.  She claims that Ramona is using Scott and that Ramona is trying to make a bigger name for herself than she actually is.  This results in a fight between the two, the crowd clearly favoring Envy, despite her being evil.   Ramona gains the upper hand temporarily due to Wallace, who is unaffected by Envy's charms and can distract her by exploiting her vanity.  When Envy is about to defeat Ramona, Knives manages to stop her, claiming that she saved Ramona because she only wants Scott's happiness.  As Sex Bob-Omb goes up to perform, Scott sees that Envy is about to defeat Ramona and Knives, as she has them unawares.  Scott manages to deal with his baggage concerning Envy and stops her in the nick of time.

Ramona tells Envy that Todd is cheating on her with Lynette and that they deserve each other.  However, Envy retorts that she and Todd were made for each other, having made a pact in their childhood to be together forever.  Ramona then reveals that Todd was dating her first, and that Envy was actually the "other woman."  Envy confronts Todd and Lynette, but enraged, Todd attacks Envy.  This sets Scott off, and he begins his fight with Todd.  Todd's actual talent at guitar and his vegan superpowers makes him too much for Scott.  However, at the last minute, the Vegan Police arrive and cite Todd for various violations of his , such as eating Chicken Parmesan and gelato.  They neutralize his vegan powers, reducing him to a normal person.  Scott defeats him by head-butting him and gains an "extra life" for winning.

The band performs to mixed reviews.  Later, Scott and Envy settle their differences and come to a resolution.  Scott moves on with his life and prepares for his next battles.

"Gets It Together"

Scott and Ramona's relationship continues, though they begin stagnating when Ramona finds that Scott can't name what he likes about Ramona other than that she's "mysterious."  He also tried to use the L-word ("love"), but Ramona stops him.  The group hangs out at Julie's aunt's summer beach house.  Knives has broken up with Young Neil.  During a bonfire, Stephen sings a song he wrote about Julie that she complains casts her unfavorably as a "bitch."  Knives disagrees and says that it's a beautiful song because the girl int he song can't understand how much the singer (Stephen) is hurting.  In the evening, Scott sees a drunk Kim and Knives making out.

While hanging out at the mall, Scott runs into Lisa Miller, who has since become a minor actress in a Canadian soap opera.  She reveals that she's in town for a little while before she moves to Hollywood and gives him her new number.  She and Kim catch up and Scott introduces Ramona to Lisa.  Later, Scott asks Ramona if she's ever kissed another girl, to which she responds that yes she has.

Meanwhile, Knives, still grappling with her love for Scott, finds that her pictures of him in her shrine have been cut up by someone.  Kim moves in with Holly and Joseph, Stephen Stills learning that Joseph has recording equipment in his room and that they could possibly make an album.

Wallace reminds Scott that they need to go see their landlord about paying their rent late.

Scott also comes to the realization that he needs to get a job and stop slacking off.  Kim assists him and he eventually gets a job through Stephen Stills, working at a vegan restaurant, the Happy Avocado, as a dish washer.  However, he and Kim are attacked as he leaves his job by a mysterious Asian man wielding katana.  They manage to escape by accidentally falling through a sub-space highway.

The gang continues to hang out, Ramona and Lisa talking about Scott, and Knives shows up at their hang outs, invited by Stephen.  Knives' presence upsets Julie incredibly.

Wallace and Scott go to negotiate with their landlord only to find that their rent was paid for, as they paid first month and last month when they initially signed for the lease--which is now up.  The two have a month to decide what to do.  Scott is attacked after work by a mysterious blonde, pudgy, female ninja, who claims to know about Scott.  She retreats after Scott accidentally punches her int he breast.  While working at the Happy Avocado, Scott sees Ramona eating lunch there with the mystery ninja.  Scott confronts them, learning that the ninja is Roxanne "Roxie" Richter, an established artist with an exhibit in Toronto, and Ramona's fourth evil ex.   Scott is shocked, having assumed that all of Ramona's exes were men and refuses to fight Roxie because "she has a sword" and "she's a girl."  Ramona fights Roxie instead in a sub-space highway, though she can't escape, since Roxie "taught her everything she knows."  Offended, Roxie leaves.  the commotion gets Scott fired from his job.

Scott mentions to Ramona that he needs a place to stay soon.  Ramona reluctantly offers for Scott to move in with her, noting that he has finally gotten a job.  At another group hang out, Young Neil laments how the group hasn't hung out with him lately due to band practices having moved to Kim's house.  Ramona becomes suspicious of Lisa, who keeps trying to talk to Scott.  While walking home, Ramona accuses Scott of having an attraction (either in the past or presently) for Lisa.  Scott tries to assure Ramona that he was only ever friends with Lisa and didn't want a relationship with her.  Still upset, Ramona storms off.  Frustrated, Scott returns home, stumbling in on Wallace and Mobile having sex.  Wallace apologizes and turns Scott out.  With nowhere else to go, Scott sees Lisa's number in his pocket and frustratingly calls her.

At Lisa's sister's apartment, Scott and Lisa discuss his fight with Ramona.  Scott considers the baggage of his relationship with Ramona and questions whether or not her guardedness and suspicion is worth the trouble of dating her.  They then talk about their friendship and Lisa reveals that she has been intentionally dressing more revealing for Scott.  She and Scott ask each other why nothing ever happened between them in high school and Lisa chalks it up to being silly and young, but then offers that maybe something "should happen between them now."

Scott wakes up not remembering the night previous and wonders if something happened between him and Lisa.  Lisa assures him that nothing happened, because Scott refused her advances and she began to cry and Scott tried to make her feel better, eventually ending with them eating "a lot of pizza" and Scott passing out.  However, Lisa notes that Scott talked about how much he "loved" Ramona.  Having an epiphany, Scott races off to Ramona's but turns around to try to get his job back at the Happy Avocado.  Scott later runs into Knives, who works at The Second Cup coffee shop now.  He is then attacked by the mysterious Asian man again, but Knives identifies him as her father.  Knives guesses that her father learned of her dating a white boy and was the one who slashed her photos of him.  Scott attempts to flee into a sub-space portal and finds himself in Ramona's subconscious, where she sits in skimpy clothing at the foot of the half-shown Gideon.  Ramona freaks out and kicks Scott out of her subconscious.  He apologizes, saying that he needed to escape, and Ramona apologizes for fighting with him the night before.  However, Scott reveals that he spent the night at Lisa's, causing Ramona to doubt his fidelity (again) and ask if he's in love with Lisa.  However, Scott then sees Roxie coming down the stairs of Ramona's house and has his own doubts about Ramona's fidelity.  Ramona tries to explain, but tells him to try to walk it off.  Frustrated and confused, Scott finds himself in contact with a darker, menacing version of himself.  He yells that he doesn't need the figure before him, but needs Ramona instead, causing it to disappear.

Scott comes across Ramona being attacked by Knives' father, who followed him through sub-space.  Scott has him follow him into Ramona's house and tries to hide while Roxie fights the Knives' father, thinking that Gideon sent him because he didn't believe that she could fight Scott alone.  Scott explains that he doesn't fight girls, but Roxie asks if he thinks that gives him a moral high ground.  Ramona tells Scott that it doesn't.  Roxie yells that Scott is a pussy who can't fight his own battles or take responsibility and that this proves it.  Scott asks Ramona if he's a pussy, and Ramona admits that he could be much more responsible.  Thinking about this, Scott grabs Ramona and tells her with conviction that he understands why she is so guarded and has the baggage she has, but that he doesn't care and that he is in love with her.  He then tells her that he knows they can make their relationship work.  Ramona is impressed by Scott's determination and made speechless.  Scott then gains 9999 experience points and levels up, gaining some stat bonuses.  A sword comes out of his chest.  Scott pulls it out and earns "The Power of Love."  Scott manages to defeat Roxie, who reveals that he'll never beat "The Twins."  Scott is alarmed at the idea of having to fight two twins.

He then tries to reason with Knives' father, stating that he never harmed her honor, but he merely nods, having approved of Scott after witnessing his fight with Roxie.  Ramona apologizes about Roxie, who was staying with her during her exhibit and admits that they made out a little.  Scott tells her that he loves her and Ramona says that she thinks she loves him too.  Ramona and Scott move in together.  At the old apartment, Scott and Wallace talk and Wallace reveals that he was moving in with Mobile, who has since become his secret boyfriend.  Meanwhile, Knives talks to her friend about how she thinks "someone" likes her and how she feels the same way.  Her father interrupts them and tells her that he thinks Scott is a decent young man and that perhaps dating a white boy is not such a big deal.  At Kim's place, the band continues to record for their album.

The group holds a going away party for Lisa.  Knives is drunk, but Julie doesn't seem upset and apologizes to Stephen for freaking out before, asking "I mean, what could you possibly see in her?"  Stephen looks away and quietly agrees.  The group toasts Lisa to success and later, Ramona and Scott exchange their birthdays.

Powers and Abilities

The setting of Scott Pilgrim is semi-fictitious in that common themes from video games, RPGs, and anime are semi-common place or unexceptional.  As such, Scott (and other characters) has no actual superpowers, but exhibits different "video game" or "anime" abilities and martial arts for humorous effect.  Some of these include creating an energy shield, wielding a sword he gained when he "leveled up," and getting stat bonuses when he levels up.  He is 'the best fighter" from the Ontario province.

Scott is able to play bass guitar, although he "sucks at it."

Inner Conflicts

Several issues are hinted at about Scott's inner conflicts.  After his breakup with Envy, Scott became incredibly drunk and made a fool of himself in flashbacks, though Scott claims in the present that he "doesn't/didn't drink."

Likewise, his relationship with Wallace is ambiguous, as whenever anyone asks how he and Wallace became friends or how they ended up living together, Scott says that he doesn't want to talk about it.  One flashback panels shows Scott and Wallace drunkenly walking and hanging on to one another and Wallace asking if he can crash at his place.

During Scott's grappling with Ramona possibly cheating on him with Roxie, Scott comes face to face with a "Dark Scott," who he appears to know and despise.  Scott states that he doesn't "need him" and disperses him.
