I've been away from Marvel for quite some time and I'm wanting to get back to X-men, The last story I read was "Utopia" and I'm really interested in "Schism" but I was looking at reviews for the books inbetween and they've been less than kind (And expensive).

Anyway Can I read Schism without reading the books inbetween "Utopia" & "Schism" or are they needed to understand it,

    Thanks

Being a stand alone series doesn't necessarily mean that you don't need to read anything that came before it to grasp it, though.

@Red_Robin212: I'd read Second Coming, at least.

Schism has a good intention to push the X-Men corner of the Marvel Universe in a new direction but is was poorly concieved, written and executed.

If we're talking about pre-reading in order to understand what's going on... I would go as far as to say to start at Messiah Complex for the first mutant birth or even better at House of M to understand the decimation!! Depends on how much X-Men you've read!?!?

I would say start at where Morrison took over really most of what he did changed the X-men world into what it is today. It is what i did when i came back to reading the X-men. There was a since of being a bit loss but with in a few books I was fine with not reading anything before. I have since gone back and read the older stuff that i have missed, but i felt it was a good place to start. If that's to far back for some, the House of M or Messiah Complex works just as well.

You don't need to read it. You could just skip past it. Schism was really bad and pretty much they just rushed a story to break up the X-Men. Not worth reading. Anything you missed you'll get caught up on in the new Regenesis books.

Horrible writing and personalities changed to force events to happen.
