The faces of the female corpses are left scarred, ripped to pieces by a vampire bat. A new pet for Dracula, the bat appears through the film whenever Dracula wants to access an otherwise protected location. They both appear together so this is not simply Dracula shape-shifting. Left unmentioned is that vampire bats, all three species, are indigenous to the Americas.
The film depicts Dracula as far crueler than previously seen. Drinking blood seems to be a secondary concern. He seems more interested in torturing victims, whipping them to exhaustion, burning them alive, impaling them. The later practice brings his demise. Dracula actually wins his final fight against main opponent Simon Carlson (Dennis Waterman). He is preparing to impale Carlton on a metal instrument, when a lightnig bolt strikes said instrument. dracula is electrocuted to death. For once the raging storm around the climactic battle was not part of the scenery.
