    Scarlet Issue 1 0

I took a gamble today. Not a big one mind you, but a little one. You see, I am a Bendis fanatic. Everything I have read that he wrote I liked, most of it I've loved. Alex Maleev on the other hand I've only encountered once. Granted, that was awesome as well. So when I heard about this book, an indy book with nothing preceding it, a real world setting, and Bendis and Maleev, I figured I'd take a gamble. Now kids, gambling is a terrible habit. Lucky me though, it paid off this time. I entered know...

Bendis and Maleev team up again to create Scarlet 0

I love Brian Michael Bendis's works. From House of M to the creation of the Ultimate universe in Marvel, Bendis has come up with some creative writing. Besides Siege, Bendis also took another one of my favorite superheroes, Spiderwoman into play, which was sadly canceled this year. Thanks to IGN, I saw a preview of his latest work Scarlet and it got me curious. Now that the first issue is out, how does it turn out?   The story is that Scarlet is tired of a broken world and after a event with her...

    Welcome to the Revolution 0

This comic is a true work of art. Maleev is one of the premier artist of our time who is a visual storyteller. Coupled with A-list talent like Bendis and you have a recipe for brilliance. Scarlet is steeped in the counterculture. Scarlet herself is equal parts Elektra, female Travis Bickle, and Tank Girl. A major polarizing factor for potential readers is that the fourth wall is not only broken, it is shattered. Breaking the fourth wall is a tricky technique that in the wrong hands begets medioc...

    Strong Start 0

From the very first page where our heroine is just finishing off choking some random dude to death. This first issue explodes with the harshness of a "broken world" and gives us a strong look at the main character teasing us with hints about her motivations and context for her personality (which involves a lot of the breaking of the 4th wall). But, at the same time there is still a lot of mystery about who she is and her contextual place in the larger world.   Bendis does a superb job of reeling...

    "Edgy" 1

You know something is wrong with a comic when the press description tells you as much as the issue it’s self. Scarlet tries to start the story of Scarlet, our redheaded vigilante with an uncanny ability to break the fourth wall so much that Ferris Buller would tell her to shut up. In fact the way that this monologue is written make the whole thing seem like you are reading the wishful dreams of some angsty 18 year old girl, who listens to way too much System of a Down. Sadly this isn’t the only ...

I need some more convincing 0

First off I thought the Art was well done, but to be honest i need some more convincing. To sum up what Scarlet is about, one could easily pop in The Brave One with Jodie Foster to get the general idea. The breaking of the Forth wall at the right moments can become a wonderful tool in engaging the reader within the story, however i felt that Bendis over did the break of the fourth wall. It almost  felt as if I picked up the book and almost immediately this really angry woman starts telling me ab...

    Hero or Killer? 19

I root for the villain every bit as much as the hero.   I have often said, "I like a little bit of Villain in my Hero" and vice versa but maybe Scarlet goes too far, even for me.      In Scarlet's case, I'm not sure which she is and I have this strange need, to stick her into one of those tight neat little boxes (I hate little boxes).   That is unusual for me, typically I WANT moral diversity.   It's those moments when a villain or hero surprises me, makes an unexpected choice, which shows their...

    I'm a Sucker for Redheads 0

Redheads are crazy, redheads are fun, redheads should wear their hair short, listen to Bad Religion and have a chain connected to their wallet, sitting in the pocket of their tight, heavily warn, stain wash jeans. OK OK, ending my daydream.   Scarlet is interesting to me for a few reasons.  In the first 10 pages you really want to love this chick. Then about 3/4 of the way through it you want to hate her. I mean really! Why the f..k do you like this idiot blond dip-shit with the headphones aroun...

    Scarlet; the Next Punisher? 0

Brian Bendis and Alex Maleev create a new hit! Scarlet is a red-head who kills those who deserve it...    A red-head who kills... She has her reasons! The Good  Scarlet is an interesting character who has a messed up past. Bendis creates a not so original idea (breaking the 4th wall) in an original matter. This is an origin book, where the story is told by the main character in a way breaking the 4th wall without the need of sounding like Deadpool!  Maleev is an awesome artist, an...
