I popping action!
A bran-new Wolverine series is out for "Marvel Now". I used to be a big fan of Logan when i was younger, but in recent years I have lost interest. Hopefully this series redeems the character a little.
Good:
I always enjoy when the writer and artist are one in the same, especially with talent like Cho's. Its done in a very pulpy manner, which some other users have criticized, but I enjoy it. By pulpy, I am referring to decapitating tribes men, and having dinosaur's eyeballs pop out of their heads. I enjoy the excessive blood and inner monolog that I've been missing as a wolverine fan. And we get a Wolverine story. Not an Avengers story, or an X-Men story, or a Deadpool story (not that I mind them), or a Wolverine and son story, or and Wolverine and the kids story (why in god's name is he the school principle?)- a Wolverine story. It's a little gritty, and he's slicin' and dicin', I like it. The last couple years his origins story has been dominating the story arcs, and while that was interesting it took the character in a move sensitive direction. If you like that you can read read "Wolverine and the X-Men" (or just about anything Marvel is putting out), but I prefer him to be a bit more...savage.
... and also Dinosaurs!!! = RAWR ("I love it" in dinosaur talk)
Bad:
Sexism galore! :P Seriously one of the main knocks against the industry is the portrayal of women in comics, and this issue's ONLY female character is wearing about as much fabric as Wolverine's glove. The main plot seems to be Wolverine coming to her rescue (damsel in distress), and it is evident her joyous embrace of him. With that said she more than hold's her own as a fighter, and frankly does better than our title character. It was interesting to see Frank bring in one of his earlier works (see Shanna, The She-Devil ).
I know Wolverine is just one of those characters that you can drop in any situation- but Cho took this WAY to literal. I have know idea why he's there, it doesn't look like he knows either. It's written from a mystery ("why am I here?") its written as if he is overly accepting the events before him.I know he's used to odd situations but he doesn't even bat an eye here- and not in a bad ass way, more like a 'herp-derp, oh well' kinda way.
Verdict:
My main con for this series/issue is Shanna, but once you get best appearances she is actually an interesting character. I enjoy this new more "savage" Wolverine, which is a welcomed change to "Wolverine and the X-Men" (I really don't like that series- see review here). It looks like this series won't be having a lot do to with the rest of the Marvel universe, and I couldn't be happier. It's nice to see Wolverine being Wolverine for a change.
