Sauron is the Dark lord of Mordor, and the creator of the one ring. He is not truly a man but a Maiar, angelic beings who serve Eru, he fell from grace when Morgoth corrupted him. Edit
Sauron was the greatest of the maiar, who were lesser angelic spirits. He once served the valar of creation and artifice in the earliest days of the First age of the sun, he was soon corrupted by Morgoth, then known as Melkor, who was the Greatest of the Valar, the greater Angelic spirits. He did very little in the wars of the first age, in fact, one could question whether he did anything at all. His time would come in the second and third ages. It was during the second age that he forged the one ring out of the fires of Mount Doom. He played a hand in the creation of the seven rings of dwarfs, and the nine rings of men, the three rings of elves were free of his taint however, and thus he had no power over them. Much to his chagrin, the dwarfs' natural hardiness fought of his control, they did not even become invisible when they donned their rings. But the race of men was not so lucky, they were corrupted into the Nazgul, their bodies became invisible and eventually, when they had long past their natural life span, they became the Undead abominations they were most well known for.
Sauron's base was in Mordor, the lands surrounding Mount doom, he created Orcs, who were corrupted elves in the spawning pits of the abyssal place. He would later create Uruk-Hai, a mix of orcs and men. He Erected the Tower of barad-dur a tower crafted of the strongest materials that rose over 5,000 feet tall at the very least, and he used the Eye of Sauron as his coat of arms, a figurative symbol placed upon the flags and banners of mordor.
He would soon wage war upon the elves, and he was driven back after this conflict, He would wage the famed war of the last alliance at a later date in the Second age. In the war of the last alliance the Race of Men and Elves banned together to oppose Sauron's evil, facing vastly superior numbers of orcs in home territory they stood their ground. Beating back the orcs with calculated precision. Victory seemed near, Until Sauron came, The Fallen Maiar ravaged the forces of the last alliance with ease. He was killing dozens with each stroke of his Mace. His last victim was the father of Isilldur, the then king of Gondor, he struck the King onto a rock, mortally wounding the human beyond all repair, Isilldur quickly rushed to his father's aid, but alas, it was in vain, for he had passed into the afterlife.
Sauron soon approached Isilldur with his finger's outstretched, but in a sheer stroke of luck, Isilldur severed the fingers on Sauron's right hand with perhaps the luckiest blow in history. As the finger that held the ring was removed from it's parent sauron was defeated. Sauron however, did not lose his corporeal form as was depicted in the movies, he was merely forced to retreat. The ring passed to Isilldur, who had the chance to destroy the ring once and for all, but the ring had already corrupted him, and he left mordor. Eventually he would be killed by an orc ambush, and the ring was lost for the time being.
Sauron took the guise of the necromancer, A wizard much like Gandalf or Saruman, for a unstated duration. Eventually gollum would find the ring and hold it for over 500 years, well past a hobbit's natural life span. Then it would pass to Bilbo baggins, who would hold it for fifty years until he gave it to Frodo. Sauron was expelled from Gondor when he was discovered for who he really was. He returned to mordor and began preperations for the War of the ring. A war that would be his last.
The Nazgul sought out Frodo after learning where the shire was. After playing a deadly game of cat and mouse, they lost frodo. But the war was just beginning. Saruman, another seeker of the ring, began to unleash his Uruk-Hai upon the Nation of rohan. After the battle of helm's deep and the Ent attack at isengard, Saruman was defeated. Sauron soon unleashed his orcs upon Gondor's capital of Osgilliath, and soon the city could no longer take the thousands upon thousands of orcs pouring into the city by boat. They then shifted their focus onto Minas Tirith, a well defended city and second only to Osgilliath in population and importance. He would lose this battle as the Riders of rohan charged to assist gondor at the last second, and The witch king, mightiest of the Nazgul whom No man born of woman could kill, Was slain by Eowyn, a woman who's mother died in child birth.
The Gondorians made a last attack upon the indestructible gates of Mordor. This was merely a diversion so Frodo could bring the ring to mount doom. Soon Frodo reached mount doom, but at the last second, failed as the desire to wear the ring reached a crescendo at the cliff. Gollum, who had followed Frodo and Samwise all the way to Mount doom, bit off Frodo's finger while he was invisible and danced in glee, only to be pushed off with the ring by frodo.
As the ring was destroyed by the fires of Mount doom, Sauron's physical form was destroyed and the tower of Barad-dur collapsed as Mount doom exploded, Frodo was soon rescued by Gandalf and the giant eagles, sapient creatures who could possibly be shape shifted maiar. As sauron put much of his life force into the ring, his body was destroyed and he became a dark cloud of pure malevolence as his will to rule overpowered the pull of the void, but he had no body left to remain, so he became the least physical thing possible, a cloud. He was soon blown away by a powerful wind from the west. The war of the ring, had ended.
