    Overview

    Sarah Josepha Hale was born in New Hampshire, New England in October 24, 1788. Whilst working as a school teacher she met and married lawyer David Hale, of whom she had five children. She become a widow in 1822. She broke ground in the field of writing, with her book Northwood: Life North and South, which was about slavery, and one of the first major books to be published about the subject. One of Sarah's most famous works, was published in 1930, in a collection of poems titled Poems for Our Children. The nursery rhyme Mary Had a Little Lamb (originally known as Mary's Lamb) Sarah is also widely considered the person whose contributions helped establish Thanksgiving as an American National Holiday.
