During her first posting in Gotham City, Essen had an affair with a young married cop called James Gordon.
Years later, Essen returned to Gotham and eventually became the city's police commissioner.
She also returned to her early love and married Gordon enjoying a few brief years of happiness together before she was cruelly murdered by the Joker.
