Welcome to another day of covering the New 52 Panel! I'd love to guess what this one is about, but honestly, I have no clue. How are you guys enjoying your day? Red Robin and Deathstroke are still sitting next to me, so hopefully, a fight doesn't break out, or someone stabbing someone in the eye again. But hey, we're not in Hall H! We're in room 6DE, my second home this week!

11:20- Kickin off! John Cunningham says it's a bit delayed because it's going to be an "All-Star" showcase. Dan Didio and Jimm Lee walk out. Judd Winnick comes out. Tony Daniel comes out. Bernard Chang comes out. Scott Lobdell comes out. Sterling Gates and Rob Liefeld come out. Grant Morrison struts out. He's allowed to. Geoff Johns comes out, and the last person, good old Scott Snyder. Wonderous.

== TEASER ==

11:25- Didio turns it over to the group. Jim Lee thanks the crowd for coming up and being positive about it. Geoff says he's moving today. Aquaman time! Finally. Every time he tells someone he's writing this book, they say Aquaman sucks. Everyone thinks he's goofy, and he's not. "The book is beautiful." Someone says not to cut off his hand. Johns says he's going to cut off his foot. Johns gets into Green Lantern, same stuff from the Green Lantern panel... Hal gets arrested in the first issue.

11:27- Grant Morrison is on a book tour. Action tells the early story of Superman. Not the boy on the farm, but Superman in Metropolis. We get to see how the costume involved over the years. He doesn't have the same power set, he's younger and brasher. Rob Liefeld time. No, onto Sterling Gates. They will be teamed up for Hawk and Dove. They're showing panels from the book, and I don't care what anyone says, I like his art a bit. It's nostalgic for me.

11:32- "DC has the best magical characters, bar none" claims Rob Liefeld. I agree. Scott Lobdell on Teen Titans and Superboy. They wanted to separate characters from their legacy. Make characters like WonderGirl more her own character and less like Wonder Woman. Red Robin looks like Falcon. White Falcon. Art work looks really nice on the big screen. Tony Daniel on Hawkman. "It's been a very hard but fun and fulfilling project for me... We're streamlining him a bit... My artist, Phillip Tan is doing an amazing job. I've never met anyone more excited." Jim Lee he stays at Starbucks all day to do his art and it's very "caffeine driven." It's an honor to do Detective #1 says Daniel. It's going to more short stories revolving around Bruce Wayne and Batman as a Detective with a noir vibe around it. Tony is making new characters for Batman to fight.

11:40- Snyder on Swamp Thing: He proclaims his love for Swamp Thing. He wanted to give the character a new a bold and fresh look. Swamp Things last actual memory was being on fire and landing in the swamp. The series is about the secret history and his relationship to the green and we'll get to meet his greatest enemy to date. "I'm so, so honored to be on this book."

11:45- Judd on Batwing. So far, no new info that we didn't already get from the Batman panel two days ago. It is a super hero book. They show Ben Oliver's art again of the guy getting stabbed through the chest. Artwork still looks awesome.

11:50- Back to Snyder on Batman #1. "It focuses on Bruce Wayne in Gotham... the idea is that Gotham is a city the is 300 years old. What if Bruce doesn't really know Gotham at all? What if there is something darker there? What if there's an ancient evil?" Book sounds awesome.

11:55- Question time. Q: Guy asks why aren't their more female leads in DC books? A: Didio puts him in his place because they have around 8 books in the new 52 starring women. Q: Where are the New Gods? A: You'll see them in Multiversity next summer. Q: Why the number 52? A: 52 is a magical number in the DCU. Q: IS Hawk going to face any blowback from not completing his mission in BD? A: Wait and see.

12:00- Q: Have you considered bring artwork into digital? Creating online 3d digital comic. A: Didio says it's something they're thinking about, but they're focusing on the books now, but the books will be available as digital online, just not 3d.... 3D comics? That sounds a tad ridiculous. Q: Which of the 52 should you give to your friends? A: Judd Winnick says give them all to your friends. Other than that there is no real answer. Q: Will Ambush Bug ever return? A: Didio says no. Giffen doesn't want to do it.Next question asker says he's glad Rob Liefeld is back at DC. Red Robin, sitting next to me, asks his friend who Rob Liefeld is. ::facepalm::

12:10- Q: Do you think that Sinestro's willpower has made him your perfect character? A: Johns says yes. Morrison talks about Batman and says Batman Leviathan will be his last story with the character next year. It will be a huge story.

12:15- 15 minutes left and my butt is killing me. Q: Please do something with Aquaman. Is Batwing going to have invisible children or something else I couldn't hear? A: Judd says no because it's a super-hero book. Batwing's arch-villain is called Massacre. They'll be staying away from the politics. Q: What costume would you guys wear? A: Johns says Grant Morrison. Morrison says he's here as Lex Luthor. Q: Will Cassandra Cain be in the new DCU? A: Morrison says yes. Q: Are you committed to hiring more women? A: Didio says we're committed to hiring the best writers and artists around. The crowd yells Gail Simone. Grant Morrison says if you want to work for DC, send your stuff in.

12:25 Scott Lobdell talks about a new Latino character named "Wall" AKA Miguel who can create a 3 foot by 3 foot force field. Q: Are Flashpoint elements getting carried over? A: The Element Woman gets caried over, Grifter, some of the things that happen to Cyborg will get carried over. Final Question: Guy bashes a few comic series. He brings in Green Lantern/Plastic Man: Weapons of Mass Distraction. Morrison takes it and like it. Judd says one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Someone says not to cut off his hand. Johns says he's going to cut off his foot.

But.... Aquaman already lost his hand in brightest day. Or are they undoing that?

I'm pretty sure in the revamp, they're undoing the lost hand

@TheLastLantern: I'd say yes. All the preview art for Aquaman so far has shown two hands, gloved though they may be.

Kinda sad. I know their desire is to rouse the fans and help perpetuate interest in the series but, nothing happened in this panel. From the review it sounds like they get the same questions each panel and no new content. Hope the next ones are better.

I love Gail Simone! She is so awesome, she replied to me on twitter the other day about Ryan Choi and diversity(even though she called me peter, my name is philip, but its ok! lol)

I think Cassandra Cain being confirmed to be around is the best tidbit so far...i guess i'm happy they're keeping Aquaman's hands too lol

Did I miss it? Has anyone actually addressed how stupid the new outfits and changes made to the characters in Suicide Squad are?
#10 Posted by sj_esposito (457 posts) - - Show Bio

Wow, Lobdell's new character, 'Wall', sounds like he's got s pretty crappy ability. A 3x3 foot force field? Really? And the name is just as bad.

@pikahyper:  Sounds plausible, Rob Liefield does have a bad reputation when it comes to his own personality.
#19 Posted by Sammo21 (687 posts) - - Show Bio

It is what it is...the artwork is great so far, BUT after reading the DCnU preview this week I am more confused than anything. I know in the "new" timeline that Superman is the planet's first super hero and I guess his first showing is being told in Action Comics...so does that mean Superman is set in modern day (since he has the fancy new costume?)...same for Batman? The one preview I read had Green Lantern say "so you do exist?!" when bumping into Batman so it must take place in the past. We also have team books where everyone seems to be together, so its really hard for me to tell where everything is taking place...how long ago...when, etc.

A: Didio puts him in his place because they have around 8 books in the new 52 starring women

Didn't a woman ask him that, and weren't they quite rude to her? Not to mention of those 8 books starring women, how many of they are even considering a female perspective and how many have them as fap fodder for boys? And that person in another panel pointed out they went from 12% female creators to 1% with this new reboot, and they didn't have such a good response for that one.

Told my ass, I lost a lot of respect from what I heard of this response. They're clapping themselves over the back for putting Supergirl in a leotard, adding another hot bisexual girl, and having Catwoman's boob out on a cover, well congrats to them, they're ~so progressive~. *eyeroll*

NOT. IMPRESSED. AT. ALL.

FUCK JIM LEE, EVERY DICKHOLE RELATED TO HIM PROFESSIONALLY, AND EVERYONE ON THAT PANEL THAT THINKS THIS "NEW 52" IS A GREAT IDEA.
#26 Posted by damswedon (499 posts) - - Show Bio

@okayla: DC Women Kicking Ass has a post about her. She has supposedly asked the same question at quite a few DC panels. Also do you follow Gail Simone on twitter? She's been ranting quite a bit with the way Jim Lee and Dan Didio have been pushing Babs as the best Batgirl because it essentially says to Steph and Cassie fans, "the characters you like are crap".

#27 Posted by okayla (102 posts) - - Show Bio
@damswedon: Yeah, I watched DWKA over on Tumblr - it's how I know about the incident.

Seriously, do they not realize they live in an Internet age? The post has only been up for a few hours and their nasty little attitude is already being chatted about. I can't understand how they let these people run the show, they clearly have no idea how to do PR or how to actually reach the masses. No wonder caped comics are dying out when you have such insecure little boys running the show.  They don't even know how to give a blank PR statement that doesn't piss people off, and they wonder why we don't trust them with this reboot.

I feel terribly for Gail; I feel like from CBR and other forums/interviews, she's basically doing full damage-control for what sounds like a decision she didn't really enjoy in the first place.
#28 Posted by FoxxFireArt (3546 posts) - - Show Bio

I would like to see Batman be steered more toward detective work. Too many writers focus on his fighting. While that is very important, his detective skills are too often pushed to the side or barely used at all. Brooding hero works for Batman.  I'm not so sure about the Gotham ancient evil bit if it ends up as something supernatural.
What I would like to ask is will Cassandra Cain still be Bruce's adopted daughter. That part of the story has been grossly mishandled in the past year and more. It's almost as if these writers can't seem to manage interpersonal relationships.

The more I hear about this "brash" emo-Superman. I just want to laugh, but it's just too damn sad. It looks as if they are trying to leach off the direction of Smallville, thinking that will being readers in. Poeple really don't like it when you mess with Superman's powers. That's blown up in their face before.

If you've been following this con you would know that that question has been asked 100 times in these panels and they've given good answers to them, mature up and learn that they are not trying to sugar coat the truth. Do you want PC answers or a real answer to questions?
Not to mention of those 8 books starring women, how many of they are even considering a female perspective
First of all 8 books starring women is a cool amount, I wish they're is more, hopefully in the second wave. When a book stars a women it usual has it in their perspective. I find that comment strange cause you should assume that that's the case for an ongoing,
and how many have them as fap fodder for boys?
Lets not have sexist comments here. Its beneath you. No one reads comics to jerk off, nor would I assume you read comics to look at buff men in tight spandex. If a guy looked good in short shorts (Original Robin), i'm sure they would of kept that style.
And that person in another panel pointed out they went from 12% female creators to 1% with this new reboot, and they didn't have such a good response for that one
This was addressed before, they did ask alot of popular women creators to work on this project (go look it up its there) but they were busy. It was hinted that they'd be on the second wave. So keep your hopes up.

First of all in the relaunch the amount of Women leads and members in teams have inceased, current women creators are still working for them, they're busy and like most newer plans its hush hush till the time is right. Supergirl in a leotard? how is that worse? If its skin your worried about, the new suit shows less skin. I dont see why we have to tell our women to cover up, doesn't seem very progressive of us. Hot bisexual girl? Everyone in comics look good, everyone (unless they were made to look ugly) there is no averge looking character. Did not know she was bisexual. I dont have a problem with that nor should you. Catwoman was created to be sexy, its true to the character, she should act sexy and do sexy things, she stole the Bats heart for god sakes (hard to do).

DAYUM. XD
It's true though. Sexism is what you make of it. I doubt that the DC admins are trying to make women have a smaller role, but that's just how it turned out. Comics have been around since the 30's, and women have only really shot into the big world in the 70's-80's. I think that they're making progress, but it would look like they're desperate if they just brought in a whole bunch of new female characters. DC is actually better than Marvel for having prominent strong female characters that actually stay alive. Look at Oracle. Tough as nails. And putting in a bisexual girl is actually progressive. They can't make an ugly character, truth is, people wouldn't like it, and up until 20-odd years ago, bisexual was a bad word. Hell, in a lot of places it still is. And Catwoman's boobs? One of her origins said that she used to be a call girl. They HAVE to have a killer body, or they wouldn't be very good, would they?

Funny hearing people scream about hiring more women. Do they know the inner workings of DC's hiring process. The assumption is that DC is sexist but without any knowledge of the facts. Gimme a break.

If you're on a PR tour then yeah, you should probably be giving PC answers and not pissing off a faction of your ever-shrinking fanbase. Good answers? Perhaps in general, but not by Didio who has forever seemed personally offended people dare question the reboot. It's more mature to be graceful about your answers, and not be dismissive or annoyed at your customers. Jesus, they're making a big change and people have asked respectful questions. Even Gail Simone herself has said it was a valid question about female characters, but you wouldn't think it from their response.

First of all 8 books starring women is a cool amount, I wish they're is more, hopefully in the second wave. When a book stars a women it usual has it in their perspective. I find that comment strange cause you should assume that that's the case for an ongoing,

Something like Catwoman, while totally fine, is NOT made with a female perspective - it's clearly made to be cheesecake for the guys, especially with the way that Judd has described it. I don't give a damn, it's okay to have books like that, but at the same time ranting about how great and progressive you are does not click with these sort of books.

Lets not have sexist comments here. Its beneath you. No one reads comics to jerk off, nor would I assume you read comics to look at buff men in tight spandex. If a guy looked good in short shorts (Original Robin), i'm sure they would of kept that style.
It's not sexist to acknowledge when something is cheesecake, nor did I say anything is wrong with that. Catwoman has forever been sexy, and that's okay. You want a book that's 'dirty' and 'sexy', that's fine. Ain't no issue with it.  But mocking a girl because she politely asked why there aren't more female books (Clearly meaning with a female-reader perspective in mind) and then applauding yourselves over cheesecake is not the way to go about it.

This was addressed before, they did ask alot of popular women creators to work on this project (go look it up its there) but they were busy. It was hinted that they'd be on the second wave. So keep your hopes up.
It's a pretty valid  question because they aren't there, and hey, if that's the answer - say it like that, don't just whine; "WHO SHOULD WE HAVE HIRED".  That's not cool. Say it like you have, that's reasonable. You're on a PR tour, don't be jerks, is it really that difficult? I suppose so for them. Especially the dismissive 'submit yourself' from Morrison, when DC doesn't accept submissions. I don't personally think they're going out of their way not to hire women, I've studied comics and I know that most of my female creators buddies are going into alternative comics. But in part, that's due to dismissive, rude responses and attitudes like this. While there aren't as many women going into caped comics, it's also a little ridiculous to pretend that in terms of hiring it's a bit of a boy's club.  I don't agree with all her questions, but at the same time, their responses pissed off a bunch of people. There isn't anything wrong with sugar-coating when you are trying to get people to read/enjoy your things.

Catwoman was created to be sexy, its true to the character, she should act sexy and do sexy things, she stole the Bats heart for god sakes (hard to do).
I understand that all characters in comics are attractive, I don't have a problem with that - but I think it's sort of funny you say it's 'changing a character too much' to make them gay when compared with the huge changes we see in character like Babs and Superman. And of course, there's always room for more lesbians in DC. It's not problematic to have bi female characters, but it's problematic when it seems like you're terrified to do the opposite.   It's not about telling a 'woman to cover up', but when you look at Kal-El's costume and then look at hers , and look at Kara's personality, it makes you roll your eyes. Perhaps Kara has had a personality change, but it's pretty amusing when her male equivalent has covered every square inch of skin.  Independently are these things wrong? Nope, not really. But when combined with recent statements, attitude, and compared with other things, it comes across as problematic.   Especially when you combine it with their statements about female characters mysteriously missing from this new DCU, and statements they've made within the years.   Basically, these things aren't really anything to raise your eyebrow at individually but when you line them up it's certainly intimidating.

I don't think she was necessarily right about everything, but they sure as hell mishandled their responses in a way that came across as offensive and made me rethink how much money I want to give them. I'm basically disappointed in them, because it's this attitude that permeates comics.

" Q: Guy asks why aren't their more female leads in DC books? A: Didio puts him in his place because they have around 8 books in the new 52 starring women."

Yeah... because 8/52 (even if none of the 8 were team books, which some are) totally makes up for the 30+ male-only lead books.

Oh, wait, it doesn't.

so back to JLA Year One Aquaman. Hmm, one handed guy as an inspiration, now i think one handed Aquaman could be better then. I always thought he looked like Captain Hook with the hook but i forget some people might like it for a very valid reason. It is inspirational. Either way i like Aquaman like Inferiorego says. He's not useless, in fact he's very practical. Those old cartoons may have made him look bad but,..there are so many heroes who dominate the air and land, but Aquaman's like the only guy who offers any naval help. And he loves the whales, someone ought to protect the whales. That's what heroes should do. Also, he could have done something during devastating tsunamis and hurricanes. As an Atlantean he'd know so much helpful lore, (it may not always be useful, but if you ever need it, he's got it. NAMOR is a better version of a deep sea hero though.

This was definitely the panel I was most looking forward to, yet the DC creators seemed a little less respectful of fan concerns than I was hoping.
Parts of this definitely got me excited, but something about the Q&A segments always make me a little upset.  :/

Yup.  For a pretty long time he was one handed, but once he was ressurected at the end of Blackest Night his hand was restored.

@okayla: I'm sorry you feel like they were acting like jerks, could they have done the PR better? Sure. But I think they did a solid job with it, they're just writers. But it does get annoying when people want to talk about hiring when they're on a PR tour for the comics they're creating. Whats cheesecake? I'm not understanding what your trying to say with that. That its only for guys or something? Because I know alot of female fans who like Catwoman and even more guys who dont give a shit. Im pretty sure Voodoo has always been Bisexual don't know much about her but I'm pretty sure they aren't afriad to do a lesbien female hero lead (Batwoman ^^) If you mean bisexual male characters then you have a point. It's sexist to assume males use comics as "fap fodder", its offence, degrading and immature, I think I was pretty clear before. I guess they could of clearly stated that they did talk to a bunch of female creators but as you said they're on a PR tour, they want to make it sound like they're involving their customers in these choices. They did it before in a letter page of Batman and Robin asking if we wanted a Red Hood series and asked the fans to send e-mails if they did, I was one of those people who did, clearly they already planed to do it (The52 showed up a week later) and it was a fake out to see the numbers but it did get me pumped. I'm sure your buddies like alternative comics for the simple fact that they like them, I dont believe for a second that they aren't trying to break into Caped Comics because people are meanies, If you wanna do Caped Comics you set out and make it happen no matter what people say, you have to remeber there was a time when comics were looked down on (still are to a lesser degree) but creators didn't give a shit (they were embressed alittle lets be real). Supergirls personality from what i heard is abit different, more like an alien that can't relate that slowly becomes the Kara we know, I believe her costume is suppose to be more kryptonian (so basicly just abnormal) guess they dont wear mini-skirts back there (Big fan of skirts). Didn't feel like copying and pasting this time, you know whats a response to what. Next time repy to me, I didn't write all that to get nothing back you know.

Yes, but I want comics to do well and they suck at fighting their own stigma.  The report of their dismissive attitude towards that lady has gotten 500 notes (comments, reblogs, likes) in less than 24 hours on Tumblr. When your superhero comic books are hitting the middle 30k, and your top-sellers barely cracking 100,000 these days --  you can't afford to piss off hundreds.  It might be annoying, but it's your job to play nice and soothe fears - not irritate and infuriate. These are your paying customers, and it's bad business to act like you are doing them a favour.

That was my point, DC isn't really progressive with female bisexuality/lesbians because that's pretty much all they have. They might have one or two gay male characters, but they certainly don't ever really highlight them and the numbers certainly compare to their female versions.   For what it's worth, I do think they've done a fantastic job with those female characters; the handling of Renee's outing in Gotham Central and the whole DADT part of Batwoman's history was really well-researched and interestingly shown, and I have huge respect for Greg Rucka. It's just painfully inequal and their attitude about it is a little bit dismissive and illhandled.

I wasn't saying that all guys use comics for is to masturbate, but at the same time it's not true to pretend that there aren't people buying it for just that reason. Just like there is some stupid fangirl buying it to see if Tim and Kon are going to make out.   Cheesecake is the female equivilant of beefcake, that is, pin-up art, that is, why Catwoman's breast is out on the interior pages! It's okay to do this sort of thing, I don't think there's anything wrong with it- hell, some of my favourite comic artists are those from the old Playboy days. But you can't be so naive to think that those pictures are not meant to entice and cause sexual attraction rather than for story-purpose. Now, Is every comic like this? Of course not.  Does every dude read comics for that reason?  Nope, not even close.  I wouldn't count Supergirl's cover as cheesecake at all,  even if she's skimply dressed - it's nothing about her pose and stuff that suggests it. But everything we've seen of Catwoman is well in that territory.  Is that okay? Yeah, of course. But when someone like that is asking about female characters on cover, she's not really talking about pin-up art.

I guess they could of clearly stated that they did talk to a bunch of female creators but as you said they're on a PR tour, they want to make it sound like they're involving their customers in these choices.

You mean actually make a point instead of needlessly pissing off a selection of your ever-shrinking fanbase? They're on a PR tour, which means playing nice and informing people. It's not really involving customers to say "GIVE US WORK (even though we don't accept work like that...)" and to be rude to them.

Reread what I was saying, please. I said women tend to do alternative comics and don't actually tend to go for capeds in as big numbers, I was saying that they probably do not have as many women applying for caped positions by far. But at the same time, it's well known that comics are a boy's club and while they do have less women applying, it's also pretty much well-known that women aren't taken as seirously in caped comics and responses like that in panel are part of the reason a lot of women don't even considering it.   It's lack of interest combined with publicized disrespectful attitudes/comments, and a bit of preconceived notions.

@okayla: Yes, but I want comics to do well and they suck a.......
I agree they shouldn't piss them off but i believe the response to that was an overreaction to an answer that I believe had no malice.
That was my point, DC isn't really progressive.....
I think your assuming they're more comfortable with pushing Bi/Les characters when they might be trying to push for diversity here. Voodoo over Power Girl, I'd go with Voodoo if I wanted diversity. I'd like to see both though.
I wasn't saying that all guys use comics for is to masturbate....
Glad we agree we shouldn't generalize. You sounded like you were, that's why i got on your case about it.
You mean actually make a point instead of ...
You cut out my Red Hood bit showing that they do like getting responses like when they wanted female creator names the fans wanted a few questions back. What Grant Morrison said was basically "shut it we've heard it before" which was rudeish Grants not good at PR no question about it, he doesn't do the hireing and he probably assumed they did take submissions (they might be now, its not the first time i've heard that at these Dc Panels)
Reread what I was saying, please....
Yes yes, I thought you were talking about personal experience, must of mis-read. I think because of panels like these they'd consider it more, with all these fans asking for them and Grant saying you can Submit (he said it, shove it in his face now, he asked for it)

I think they're more comfortable with pushing bi/les females because they tend to have more traditional sex appeal and don't rock the boat that much.

Yeah, I did, I didn't gt your point. That they were being cute alluding to the upcoming reboot when we didn't know? And the 'wanting female creator names' sound more like them coming back at her rudely in every report i've read, not a genuine desire for her answer. Every report I've read has made it clear they weren't actually looking for her to respond, they just wanted her to shut up.

As far as I am aware, as someone going into the comic industry and who is going to university for it - you either know somebody,  or you have to know somebody.

On their website (for several years);

Submissions By Mail and Email

At this time, DC Comics does not accept unsolicited artwork or writing submissions.

Only artists get a chance, and that's for a limited space portfolio review at certain conventions.  For writers, there's nothing.

Grant would know how it goes, because that's how it's always gone.
