The story, and series, continues!
With this eleventh issue; this marks a new story arc and a new chance to return Samurai Jack back to his rightful time! However, with a new story arc, always comes a time where Jack is in even more trouble!
The Good
Good news, the series lives on! With talks (early on) of the series, originally, being only ten issues long, I was concerned that the Samurai Jack series wouldn't end well. However, it turns out there's more! (Thankfully!) I'm glad that writer Jim Zub and company will be continuing to write more Samurai Jack issues, and I [still] hope that the ending of Samurai Jack's story, will be something the fans (including me) will be pleased with. Now, let's get on with the review!
So to summarize this story, a wizard decides to send Jack back to his own time, because he knows that Aku has screwed with the timeline. I enjoyed what writer Jim Zub did with this first issue of his next story arc. He made it fun, exciting, and added a twist at the end. (More on that twist later!) I think the ideaof having more Samurai Jack, overcomes my anger that this series seems to not be going in the direction I originally expected. (To finally close the story of Jack's journey.) Maybe that's what Jim Zub has wanted to do all along. Just create fun, and engaging, stories that will entertain Samurai Jack fans, instead of giving them a conclusion fans couldpossibly hate. If that's what Zub has wanted all along, then I call this issue [and series] a mission accomplished! However,if he's wanted to honor Samurai Jack fans by finally sending Jack home, Jim Zub really needs to up his game. But again, I really liked what Jim Zub did with this issue!
Zub took a lot of the elements of a great Samurai Jack issue, interesting plot, good action, and comedic characters, and blended it into thisissue. This is definitely a good way to start off the new story arc, because it gives readers something they already are familiar with from the TV series. Plus, Jim Zub adds a nice twist at the end that will definitelymake you comeback for the next issue.....
....I'm really interested in seeing how Jack's sword being broken, will have an effect on his fighting abilities when he comes up against Aku! Can't wait to see what Jim Zub has in store!
Plus, the artwork by Andy Suriano is amazing! He captures the look, style, and feel of what Samurai Jack would look like in the TV series. Great artist, that does the job to the best of his abilities!
The Bad
The problem I had with this issue was, how long will this last? Sure, it's been the question on my mind in the first story arc, and it [once again] is my question in this story arc. You got to take everything in this series like a grain of salt. We all know that Jack is going to find a way to get his sword back together, so that's no surprise. However, my biggest problem is if Jim Zub can make this story feelimportant to the reader. If Zub just goes through the motions, this story, and story arc, will be dry like the last one. Except, having already read the first ten issues, I will already be acquainted with what kind of stories Zub creates. So I'm hoping that he can make these short stories feel meaningful in the long run, instead of just mindless fun.
The Verdict
Well, I'm certainly interested in seeing where this story goes! I do have my share of concerns, or complaints, but I'm really intrigued in what Jim Zub will be doing with having Jack's sword broken. 3 out of 5, (issue IS worth checking out), until the next one!
