Awakened, But Still In The Dark...
And so, The Awakening storyline wraps up with this third installment. Well, `wrapped up` isn`t strictly true, as we don`t really draw any conclusions come the final page, as Anna and her rescuer, Braden Cole, are thrust into another mysterious adventure like some 19th Century Mulder and Scully.
And that`s the big word here, mystery, as come the end of The Awakening Part Three, we`re as clueless about the three principle characters as we were at the beginning of the story. Darius is some evil entity or devil, Cole is full of vengeance and Anna looks good in a night-dress and has her `gifts` - her strange powers...
Just what those powers are, what Darius is, and what really was the fate of Cole`s family remains untold.
The townsfolk, under the persuasive influence of Darius, are preparing to lynch Anna Williams, having condemned her for witchcraft. However, Cole breaks up the mob by sniping from the nearby woods. Darius is severly wounded, as Anna and Cole make their escape on horseback, but manages to possess the body of the local sheriff.
Anna`s father has been killed in the encounter and Anna decides to tag along with Cole, so they can pursue the devilish Darius, together. But, that night, Anna senses a group of young boys `are in trouble` with a mysterious (there`s that word again) creature called The Leeds Devil - and they must help...
There`s another guest artist in this issue, Roberto Viacava, he does a marginally better job that his predecessor, Carranza, but I would have preferred the opening artist, Caio Reis, on the lot. There are some fine scenes here that could have looked alot better. And don`t get fooled by the sexy covers, aside from Anna`s heaving bosom, there`s nothing so saucy in the interior.
A bit more consistancy from Zenescope with the odd release pattern of these comics would help. Mystery`s fine, but momentum helps, and this publication comes out every four months (!!).
So, if you`re still intrigued - keep those back issues handy...
