When Hotaru first enters the series she is show to be a friend of Chibiusa but is always having seizures because of a illness she has. Later on in the sereis it is show that she is a Sailor Scouts, she was the last Sailor Scout to awaken. Hotaru is a very logical, dependable and very loyal with those she works with. She was a loner until she met Chibiusa and Usagi. Naoko Takeuchi (her creator) says that Hotaru is a quite and precocious as well as expressionless. In the anime she wasn't liked by her peers because of her powers and the seizures that she would randomly receive, as well as personality changes, this is caused by Mistress 9 who lived in her since she was only 5. In the Manga however she was also disliked because she was a cyborg.

She usually dresses in gray and black but she does sometimes wear a cobalt blue coat and red cap. Because of her cyborg attachments in the manga she always wore complete clothing to cover up her body. Even after her her rebirth she still always wore complete clothing but she does wear brighter colors.

In the manga Hotaru's mother, Keiko, was killed in a lab accident and Hotaru herself was critically injured. Souichi Tomi (Hotarus father) rescued her by making cybernetic body parts for her daughter and making a deal with Master Pharaoh 90. From then on her father became evil. When Sailor Moon stopped Saturn in there battle all of her cybernetic body parts disappeared and she was reborn as a baby.

In the anime Hotaru did not have any cybernetic parts, but she was an outcast because of her seizures she would receive. Her mother was shown but only in shadow in one episode but was never named, or was given much of a background. Her father doesn't die like in the manga but lives long enough to take care of her until Sailor Pluto asks for her in the beginning of Sailor Stars.

Hotaru's age is always changing in the series. She was introduced at the age of 12 and was reborn as a baby then grew to the resemblance of a 5 year old then grew into a 12 year old once more.

Because she is Sailor Saturn she can destroy the whole solar system by simply dropping her weapon, the Silence Glaive. Her powers were awake once the three Talismans that Sailor Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto gathered and resonate. Although she has terrifying ability, she reveals in the Sailor S arc of the manga that the power she has is necessary, because rebirth cannot happen without death. It was Sailor Saturn who destroyed the remnants of the war-torn Silver Millennium Kingdom, allowing a new world to be born. Finding out about these powers the other Outer Senshi attempt to kill her so she would never awaken as Sailor Saturn.

Hotaru dream is to one day become a nurse, most likey because she was a talent for healing injury's. Because of her own state of health in both the anime and manga none of her hobbies contain any physical exertion. Her hobbies are reading and collecting lamps. Her favorite class subject is World History but her least favorite class is PE. She HATES milk but loves soba, noodles, panthers, and the color purple. Her blood type is AB and her height is always changing because of her age change.

In the manga after Professor Tomoe's death Hotaru becomes the adopted daughter of Haruka Tenoh and Michiru Kaioh who are watched over by Setsuna Meioh. She calls them Haruka-papa, Michiru-mama and Setsuna-mama. After she grows out of her toddler form she becomes happier and less reserved, smiling and laughing almost all the time because of her somewhat normal life. In the anime Professor Tomoe doest pass away but is healed, and she lives with him until Sailor Pluto comes for her. After the final battle with Sailor Galaxia Hotaru still continues to live with them, it is never said if she returns to her father.

Sailor Saturn

Hotaru's Senshi persona is most of the time shown somehow separate from Hotaru. Her colors of her uniform are purple and maroon which in its initial form is unlike any of the others, with petal-shaped sleeves, a star brooch and a choker jewel and more elaborate gloves and knee-high, laced-up boots. She is also given many different titles such as; Soldier of Silence, Soldier of Destruction and Soldier of Ruin and Birth.

Sailor Saturn is also known for the Silence Galive that she always carries. This can be used to bring the cataclysmic destruction of a world OR worlds.

In the anime, all of the Sailor Scouts had lives in the Moon Kingdom and their represented planets and were all part of Princess Serenity and her court. But in the Manga Sailor Saturn is not said to have lived with the other Scouts. Her coming had always been prevented by the Outer Senshi as it was thought that allowing her to come into the world would be the distraction of their worlds. The Outer Scouts were not supposed to be reborn when the Kingdom was destroyed, but they gathered together because of its destruction, accidentally awakening Saturn from her sleep. She then killed the remnants of the Silver Millennium and they were all reborn on Earth.
