Death of a Pimpstress
Why can't I quit you Saga? I just really think we should read different books for a while, y'know? Spider-Man doesn't pull this shit on me! I know, I'm yelling again, and I promised myself I wouldn't get upset. Seriously Saga, stop breaking my heart ...my achy, break-y heart ... I just don't think he'd understand.
If I have not totally lost you by now, congratulations! You're also reading Saga! This book is a modern day classic that really highlights the strengths of the comics medium. You simply cannot make this book into a TV show or movie, because first off, you would have to dump a bucket of water on it, just to get a hard "R" rating. I say that and many people will think of a lot of swearing, sex, and violence ...and you'd be right! However that's not the real reason Saga wouldn't work in another medium. The story would hit to close to home, and it deals with a lot of real issues. It just so happens to be dressed up like a Sci-Fi adventure. Like putting a little boy in a sailor suit...Fuck you mom.
Brian K. Vaughan continues to show us how a good, loving family could be torn apart. It's not a sudden climactic event, but several small things that eat away, and cause people to grow distant. This arc has been the most heartbreaking, but believe me, there are plenty of laughs as well. A sex trafficker, or as I like to call her, the Pimpstress, got a whole blown through her chest ... so, you know, smiles. This book makes you feel stuff, and that's weird for me. You laugh, you cry, you get an erection, but it all comes from feeling something when you read the book. (I will not put a masturbation joke here, I'm better then that) There is a reason that all three volumes of this book stay in the top ten best selling graphic novels list week in and week out, and I for one hope more people check out Saga and other creator owned books over at Image comics, because it shows that comics, are not just superheroes, and there are real mature stories that push the boundaries of storytelling more than other more commercial forms of entertainment.
