History: Rus livingston was one of five NASA astronauts chosen to travel to Mars in the maiden voyage of a new, long-range space shuttle. Following an alien invasion and the revelation of Omni-Man's otherworldly heritage, the mission was thrown together quickly to calm public paranoia about Earth's vulnerability to alien attack. The astronauts were not told of the "public relations" aspect of their mission, nor were they told Invincible was sent to assure their safety.
No sooner had the astronauts landed on Mars then they were captured by the Martins. According to the Martian Monarch, the mere presence of the astronauts was a threat to their society. While the shape-shifting physiology of the Martians had kept them safe from a race of parasitic aliens known as Sequids, even on "solid" host could allow the normally mindless aliens to achieve a collective consciousness. Due to this threat, the execution of Rus and his fellow astronauts was scheduled.
Before the astronauts could be put to death, they were rescued by Invincible, who ran interference while the five space travelers retreated to their ship. Once on board, the ship blasted off to return the five astronauts home or so it seemed. Unnoticed by the other four, Rus had been replaced at some point in their escape by a Martian who had assumed his shape. The Martian rebel movement, looking for a way to over throw their corrupt monarch and free the Sequids from slavery, made the decision to sacrifice Rus to their cause and give the parasites a host.
The Martian returned to Earth, assuming the life of Rus Livingston. Before long the shape-shifting alien had ruined Rus's career and started a profession of his own as a superhero under the name "Shapesmith". The actual fate of Rus livingston, however was much worse. Even as the shuttle rocketed into space, the Sequids had found their host in the stranded astronaut, and Rus found himself the conduit for the rage of an alien race that had been enslaved for hundreds of years.
