They're not happy about having to wait.
They're not happy about having to wait.

Reports and developments for a RUNAWAYS movie were flying fast and fierce for a while, there. Peter Sollet would direct it, Drew Pearce of NO HEROICS would write it, some actors had even been locked to star in it and then… progress quietly halted. Since the slow-down coincided with the announcement of Marvel TV initiatives, I figured what happened was that RUNAWAYS was being reworked as a show.

Indiewire caught some of Pearce’s comments on a recent screenwriting panel, however, that finally set the record straight. He explained that the project’s been put on hold for a year- -along with other projects - - while Marvel’s putting all its focus on THE AVENGERS. Which makes sense. No matter how much hyberbole you pile on, any statement about how much is riding on that flick would be an understatement.

Anyway, Pearce says Marvel’s happy with his script and they must be especially happy with it, because he’s co-writing IRON MAN 3 with its director, Shane Black. Whenever RUNAWAYS does get rejiggered along with the DR. STRANGE,ANT-MAN and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY flicks, I do still think it'd work better as a TV show. I just don’t see these kids and the Pride, et al, fitting too cleanly into Marvel’s cinematic universe.

And while we're on the topic, what happened to the Runaways comic book? That thing was like Marvel's hottest commodity for a bit and poof...it pretty much disappeared.

No but seriously, I think the Idea of the series is much better than the movie, I don't see it working as a movie.

I am kind of glad they pushed it that means they will not rush the movie and it can be the best movie it can be. I am excited for this movie because I think Runaways is a great series. I remember I read the first issue of the series on a whim and now it is one of my favorite series. I thought it was a very original comic and I think it can be a very original movie that people will like.

yeah tv show is good, probably better than a movie. but definitely live action, not animated.

to clarify with what happened to the comics, the series declined a lot after volume 3. almost nobody liked terry moores writing and stories for them, and although ramos is a great artist it didnt seem to work well. what i think happened is after they started writing runaways, the sales dropped a lot. so they switched the team to immonen and pichelli, who were doing great. but by that time it was too late. in fact, if you read the last issue of volume 3, 14, ends on a total cliffhanger! not a small one, a HUGE one with no answers at all. from recent SDCC panels, it seems marvel hasnt started the book again because they "havent found the right story yet" and im okay with that.

A film would be good. A tv show would probably be a little better, but it depends on writing

I want the comic back so badly, it was amazing Volume 1 and 2 were great, 3 was pretty good. Mavel seriously needs to get a good writer on this to finish the cliff hanger and start writing really good stuff again

@CATPANEXE: ah well he hasn't exactly been reliable the past 8 or so years, I'm pretty sure any chance of that ever existing was gone once they started making the all-age Power Pack mini's.

I'm not sure what you mean. With the Avengers coming out, which most denied, that pretty much sums up every movie Stan has mentioned in an interview with the exceptions of Power Pack and S.H..I.E.L.D. ( and that looks pretty definite given Sam Jacksons dedication to the Fury role really).

I don't see why the Power Pack mini's would affect the licencing of a product to a movie? The intended direction was a PG movie.

Anyone else think Dan Slott could write a good Runaways series, he might even make a good movie too. I love his ASM, it has humor but is still serious, that is what a good Runaways movie/series needs.

Every time I think of a Runaways movie I think they are going to ruin it. Making it like Zoom or Sky High.
I can totally see them taking one look at Molly Hayes and turning her and the Runaways into Power Princess and the other kids from Zoom.

This makes sense to me...this why is Avengers is 2012's only MARVEL movie (that we know of) and they have been working towards this. I am fine with them delaying Runaways, and they don't need to make Runaways a huge Blockbuster thing...

I think a Runaways movie/show has already missed its window of opportunity. I always thought the book was designed to capitalize on teen/superhero TV dramas like Smallville and Heroes, but that trend is kinda over. I can't pick up Runaways anymore without thinking the whole jaded-teens concept is very 2007. Maybe that's just me though.

@SeanNOLA: Actually runaways was never a huge seller for Marvel as a monthly book. It did surprisingly well as the digest trade and that's why Marvel supported it as long as it did. Since BKV left the book it has floundered sales wise. I think that we probably won't get another series until the movie becomes a reality.
