The Odyssey #1

A Ruthless War With the Gods Begins in Marvel Illustrated: The Odyssey!

Hey, guess what?  School is going to be starting soon.  Yeah I know.  That's the last thing you might want to hear.  It doesn't have to be all bad.  Maybe your English Lit class will require that you read Homer's The Odyssey.  Forget those stinky Cliff Notes.  Teachers are wise to them.  They'll make sure test questions don't reflect the information and summaries given there.  Try checking out Marvel's adaption.  See, reading can be fun!  Marvel's also done other adaptions too if The Odyssey isn't on your reading list.  Look into it.  I'm not suggesting you not read the actual book, but use the comic to compare and help you through the tough parts.  Seeing the book in two different ways could help you get a better understanding.  Just don't tell your teachers I suggested this.

Troy has fallen after 10 years of battle and now Greece has emerged triumphant in the Trojan War!  Traveling back home, Odysseus, Greece’s mightiest warrior, finds himself lost out at see after being blown off course by the ruthless sea god, Poseidon!  Homer’s classic epic poem about the hero, Odysseus, finally receives the grand treatment this September in Marvel Illustrated: The Odyssey #1 (of 8)!  Join legendary writer Roy Thomas with pencils from the up-and-coming super-star sensation, Greg Tocchini, as they tell the greatest mythological adventure like it’s never been seen before!  Odysseus and his crew must cross paths and face some of the most notorious mythological creatures in all of history as they try to survive their ventures back home!

John A. Ams of ComicsBulletin.com raves about the Marvel Illustrated line, “I eagerly anticipate the remaining installments. This series has the potential to motivate today’s readers to go beyond the comics and discover the excitement of the novel itself. If you have not already invested in this series, I highly recommend you do.”

Continuing the Marvel Illustrated tradition of acclaimed novel adaptations, Marvel Illustrated: The Odyssey #1 (of 8) will leave you breathless as one of the most timeless wars is waged like you’ve never seen before!

I'll admit I never read this.  Has anyone out there?  I've heard it's a good read.  Little weird but good once you get into it.

A young man’s quest for immortality takes a dark and dangerous turn in one of the most terrifying gothic horror stories, but if the name Dorian Gray doesn’t ring a bell, there’s one comic you must experience this December-- Marvel Illustrated: Picture Of Dorian Gray #1 (of 6). Adapting Oscar Wilde’s controversial novel exploring the very depths of the human experience, legendary writer Roy Thomas teams with penciling sensation Sebastian Fiumara and fan favorite cover artist Gerald Parel for a story that challenges the status quo. A piercing look into the soul of a young man consumed by avarice, this series will leave your jaws on the floor with its shocking twists, turns and revelations.

“There’s nothing like Picture Of Dorian Gray in comics today,” said David Gabriel, Marvel Senior Vice President Of Sales & Circulation. “This is one of the most socially relevant tales of our time. If you missed out on Dorian Gray in high school, or perhaps aren’t familiar with the novel, this is a can’t-miss limited series for you!”

Fiumara’s lush pencils bring this gothic horror thriller to life like it’s never been seen before! Marvel Illustrated: Picture Of Dorian Gray #1 leaves you on the edge of your seat, challenging everything you believe!

Marvel's bringing the "classics" to comic format.  Is this a good thing or a bad thing?  Hopefully kids will still read the novels.  At least we know the adaptions should be in good hands with Roy Thomas adapting them.

Because you demanded it! Retailers and fans have demanded that Marvel bring some of the most timeless, enduring novels to life in comic book form and we’re happy to oblige with Marvel Illustrated, the House of Idea’s new line featuring the best of classic literature as adapted by industry legend Roy Thomas & a slew of talented artists. Over the summer, fans of all ages will be able to thrill to such tales as The Last Of The Mohicans, Treasure Island, Man In The Iron Mask and more, as Marvel provides the most in depth graphic literature adaptations of these stories to date. Adapted in six full length issues, each limited series re-telling of these renowned tales will stay true to the source material while presenting each story in our unique mighty Marvel style.

Beginning with May’s Marvel Illustrated: The Last Of The Mohicans, featuring the lush art of Marvel newcomer Steve Kurth and Denis Medri, James Fennimore Cooper’s 1826 novel is considered by many to be one of the great American novels. Exploring one of the most crucial periods in United States history, The Last Of The Mohicans explores the tensions between British colonists and the dwindling Native American population, all in the wild wilderness of the “New World.” Each issue will also feature special backup tales about series protagonist Hawkeye, an American who remains the mold for the definition of the word “hero.”

June sees the release of Marvel Illustrated: Treasure Island, with art by Mario Gully, featuring Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale of high-adventure on the great seas and buried treasure. Pirate Billy Bones hid his treasure with a man whose time has passed and now that man’s young son, Jim Hawkins, is the sole protector of the fortune. Unfortunately for Jim, Bones’ pirate crew wants the treasure for themselves and they’ll go through the young boy to get it! Don’t miss out on the series that first taught us that X marks the spot, that treasure is buries on tropical islands and showed us why we need talking parrots on our shoulders!

In July, Marvel Illustrated: The Man In The Iron Mask makes its debut, adapting the classic story by noted French author Alexander Dumas with art by Hugo Petrus! Continuing the adventures of the Three Musketeers, while also telling a stand alone story, The Man In The Iron Mask has been considered a seminal adventure tale since its publication in 1847 and features political nuances that still resonate to this day. King Louis XIV rules France, dragging the once great nation down in a quest to satisfy his own avarice. The best hope for France lies inside the prison known as the Bastille, where prisoner number 12 lies with an iron mask covering his face…for he is Philippe, twin brother of Louis! Imprisoned by his own brother to prevent Phillipe from vying for the throne, the would-be-heir dreams of the day when he can restore dignity to the French monarchy and if a band of rogue heroes have their way, that day will come sooner than later!

So this summer, when you’re looking for a story to transport you to a different world, look no further than Marvel Illustrated, home to some of the greatest stories ever!
