Rose Walker is the daughter of the "Dream Vortex" Unity Kincaid by Desire of the Endless. She has featured heavily in two sandman stories "The kindly ones" and most prominently in "The Dolls House". Edit
Rose Walker is the daughter of Miranda Walker and Burt Paulsen. She also had one brother, Jed Walker but the two were estranged as her father had taken Jed with him when he left her mother Miranda. Her father died a few years before "The dolls house" story and her brother had been living with their abusive uncle and aunt.
Her grandmother was a woman called Unity Kincaid. Unity was supposed to be the next dream vortex. The dream vortex is a mortal who becomes the centre of the dreaming, bring everyone in on the one dream and in the process destroying the dreaming. Because Unity was unconscious she never manifested as the Dream Vortex. Desire wanted to destroy Dream so she raped Unity in her sleep and two generations later Rose was born as the vortex. Her mother was adopted as it was only it was only very recently that her grandmother Unity woke up.
Miranda and Rose travelled to England to meet Unity. Rose returned to America to find her little brother soon after so he could meet their grandmother too. She moved into a house owned by Hal Carter(A drag Queen), Barbie and Ken(A yuppie couple), Zelda and Judy(Two lesbian women with a spider fixation) and a wandering dream called Fiddlers Green who went by the name of Gilbert.
Rose managed to track Jed down with the help of Gilbert but by time she got their her aunt and uncle were dead and Jed had been taken by the psychotic Dream, the Corinthian. Later that night Rose and Gilbert checked into a hotel but they were unaware that it was actually hosting a serial killer convention presided over by the Corinthian. Rose was attacked by one of the serial killers but was saved by Morpheus. While this was going on Gilbert found Jed in the Corinthian car. Rose and Gilbert took Jed to the hospital and Rose went home and slept.
While she was sleeping her vortex abilities started to kick in and she began to suck everyone in her home's dreams into her. Morpheus noticed this and went to destroy her. Until Unity appeared and took Rose's heart(the Vortex) into herself to save Rose and Morpheus killed her.
It was revealed that if that Desire had raped Unity knowing she was the vortex and if Dream had of killed Rose he would have split the blood of his family and brought the wrath of the Furies upon him.
After a bout of Agoraphobia Rose after the horrors she had endured recently Rose took up writing. She was writing a book on 50s tv shows and living off her grandmother's inheritance in her most recent appearance Its revealed that she is living under Lyta Hall and Lyta's son Daniel in an apartment who she occasionally babysits. She also looks after Zelda one of her former house mates from the "Dolls house" who has contracted AIDS. Due to the lose of her heart Rose has stopped aging and had lost the ability to love.
While visiting Zelda she receives a message through Zelda from her dead grandmother that if she goes to see her she'll give her back her heart. Rose departs for England and meets Paul Maguire the curator of her grandmother's retirement home to find out more about her grandmother and who she also stays with while she's in London She also falls in love with a Jack Holaday, a wealthy lawyer. After finding out he's been unfaithful Rose ends the relationship.
While exploring Paul Maguire's home Rose meets her Grandfather/mother Desire. Desire has some effect on Rose and she reveals her true feelings on love and then she bursts into tears finally regaining her heart and learning to feel again.
In the storyline "The Wake" Rose and Jed attend the funeral of dream. She just found out she's pregnant by Jack Holaday. She confides this to her brother Jed and Lyta Hall who understandably after her own experiences tells her to kill the child. Rose decides to keep the baby at the end of the story.
