Legionnaire

Rond Vidar was the son of a long time enemy of the Legion Of Superheroes, Universo. He was sent to live with a family on Earth, where it was felt he would be safe. He proved to be a genius with the concepts of Temporal Theory. He even ended up winning a prize for his invention the time cube, a device capable of transporting its contents through space and time. It later proved indispensable to the Legion, and ironically they used it to stop Universo, Rond’s father, from taking over the world.

It wasn’t long after that event that the legion made Rond an honorary member. After this he continued with his research, while also making time to collaborate on many different and varied experiments with the super-genius Braniac 5. He continued to be influential in many advances in Temporal sciences, including the creation of the Time Beacon which allowed for safe travel through time. Though his experiments did take a disastrous turn when they managed to hurl Professor Jaxon Rugarth into the clutches of a time loop, an experience responsible for turning him into the Infinite Man.

Green Lantern of 2814

At some point during his career Rond was secretly recruited by the Guardians to serve as the Green Lantern of 2814, a fact closely guarded due to Earths ban against members of the Corps at the time. Rond kept this information to himself, not even sharing it with his friends among the Legion. Universo, who considered his son a threat to his plans because he was immune to his powers, eventually killed Rond. Though he managed to survive, he allowed everyone to believe him dead because the illusion made his mission easier.  He continued to serve the corps, until his survival and identity were revealed when he helped to save Braniac 5, Saturn Girl, Duo Damsel, and Mon-El during an attack on the Time Trapper. Due to Earths ban on Lanterns he was forced to leave the planet, never to return.

Retirement(?)

Later on in his career Rond grew close to fellow Legionnaire Laurel Gand. The two began a relationship, eventually having a daughter together. When the wizard Mordu managed to destroy his power ring in battle, Rond ended his superhero career.

When the Legion was “rebooted” in 1994 Rond was one of the characters who seemed most affected. While he made occasional appearances as a time-traveling researcher, neither his parentage nor his time as a Lantern was referenced. Though as a pop culture reference, he often wore outfits that resembled costumes worn by the doctor in Doctor Who.

Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds

Rond Vidar was called upon for aid by the Legionnaires Dawnstar, Wildfire, and Blok as they rescued the White Witch from the clutches of Mordu. As they were preparing to make their escape Mordu arrived and attacked them, demanding that they return the White Witch to him. Rond was able to block the majority of his assault which led Modru to use necromancy to call upon his fallen foes to assault them. Rond attacked him with Knight Constructs, leading to a battle of wills. Mordu distracted them long enough that Superboy-Prime was able to arrive with his Legion of Villains.

Rond’s ring, presumably for the first time by his reaction, warned him to flee explaining escape from Prime as the only viable option. The Legionnaires were left trapped between Mordu.  Rond constructed a barrier to keep Prime and his Legion at bay, and managed to buy enough time for Dawnstar and White Witch to create a star gate to the Legion’s base. Knowing that Prime’s Legion could not be allowed to follow Rond elected to stay behind, even going so far as to force the others through the gate when they protested.

After waiting for the gate to close, he lowered his shields and faced off against Prime and his Legion. He managed to fight his way through and defeat a number of his enemies; He used a prism to refract Lazon, blasted Emerald Empress and Storm Boy, used the construct of a mace to pummel Black Mace, a fist to knock out Titania, place a muzzle on Validus and blast Beauty Blaze with a cannon. He was preparing to face Earthman when Saturn Queen attacked him mentally. Using her powers of telepathy she disrupted his willpower which gave Prime an opportunity to capture him.

The villains pause for a moment to defer to his father Universo, who had no problem with his son’s death, simply stating his desire of the power ring. After telling his father he’d never have the ring, and spitting in his face Rand was killed by Prime. Yet Rand was able to offer assistance to the Legion one last time.  Later under direction from Brainiac 5, Mon-El returns to retrieve his body. He takes it to Oa as a sign of good will and to hopefully help in seeking the aid of Sodam Yat, the final member of the Green Lantern Corps, the last Guardian of the Galaxy.

Upon their arrival, Mon-El and Shadow Lass were suprised by the revelation of Sodam Yat. They were the only non-Corps to witness a Green Lantern Funeral. Sodam gathered his power, and used it to turn him into pure willpower. As his friends from the Legion lamented about him, Sodam himself did the same. Stating that Rond reminded him of the original Torchbearer, Kyle Rayner, it was his death, along with Mon-El's words that helped to inspire Sodam to re-start the Corps.

Powers and Abilities

Rond Vidar, before his acquisition of Green Power Rings proved to be a genius at temporal theory, and won a prize at an early age for his invention of the Time Cube

When Rond Vidar is in possession of a green power ring he have some abilities:

  • Animating: A Green Lantern can will things to move how he wants.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Every ring has a connection to the Main Battery on Oa, which taps into an artificial intelligence. It acts as an "on-board computer," telling the wearer what they need to know. It can either respond out loud, or silently directly to the wearer's mind. The AI contains a large database of information that may be crucial to a Lantern's success. The ring also translates nearly every language to and from the wearer, which is why the Corps can communicate with each other. When the bearer of a Green Lantern ring dies, the ring will seek out a suitable replacement for their sector.
  • Burglar Alarm: A Green Lantern can coat anything with the ring's beam and thus, if anyone other than himself touches it, his ring will glow, alerting him to the possible theft.
  • Communicator: The ring can act as a personal communicator between Green Lanterns. They have also been seen connected to telephones.
  • Costumes: The wearer of the ring may create any costume they choose, based on their personal preferences, whenever they choose. The ring projects the costume over any clothes already worn at the time.
  • Energy Projection: The rings can also project beams, form protective bubbles and force fields, and fire destructive blasts. Sometimes, depending on the wearer, the beams and blasts make sounds. Kilowog's ring is one such example of blasts making sounds.
  • Energy Constructs: The rings can construct anything the wearer can imagine from hard-light energy, as long as they are willing to make it. The more determined the wearer is, the more complex and intricate these things can be. The constructs can even be so complex as to form working machines, computers, and even people.
  • Flight: The ring allows the wearer to fly in atmosphere or in space, and can achieve incredible speeds, moving from planet to planet in a matter of hours.
  • Invisibility: The ring can make the wearer or anything else invisible.
  • Matter Manipulation: A Green Lantern can use their ring to manipulate nearby matter, such as water, for various purposes such as a construct that acts like an energy construct but can block something yellow and may serve a purpose that an energy construct couldn't perform.
  • Mind Control: The wearer of the Ring can use it to plant post hypnotic commands or control a person.
  • Mirages: The Ring can create mirages/illusions.
  • Phasing: The ring allows the user to go through walls.
  • Power Absorbing: In the JLA's first fight with Amazo, it was GL who defeated him by drawing out all of Amazo's powers. In Green Lantern/Silver Surfer: Unholy Alliances, Kyle defeated Parallax with SS' power and Thanos with Oa's energy by drawing out all that extra energy from them which made them unconscious. However he couldn't hold all that power nor could his Ring like Hal did with Amazo's powers, so that move isn't often used with so much power.
  • Probing: The ring can probe the Lantern's or another person's mind, allowing him to uncover memories or the person's thoughts.
  • Radiation: Besides light based radiation used to create the energy constructs associated with a Green Lantern, the ring can simulate various forms of radiation. One example of this is the ability to simulate the radiation of Green Kryptonite, a form of radiation that is harmful to Superman.
  • Ring Duplication: Each ring can duplicate itself, creating a second ring which may be given to another as a backup, for protection, or to help the lantern in times of great need. This duplicate ring is exactly like a normal ring.
  • Temperature Control: The Ring can increase or decrease the temperature of anything, even something as large as stars, or even create bubbles of intense heat or cold, even down to Absolute Zero.
  • Transforming: The ring can transform anyone or anything, be it into an animal, altering their state of appearance, or their size. Once Hal and Alan turned the two Flashes (Bary and Jay) to light protons in order to free them from prisons.
  • X-Ray: The ring can allow the user to see through walls, without the people on the other side knowing.
