I mean, from what I remember of that fight, it made sense. If Carol had gone straight for the KO it would've been her fight, but she didn't and that gave Rogue the chance to bring things to equal footing.

I copy this from Ms Marvel profile
Carol fought Rogue so long and hard that Rogue's ability to absorb powers and memories became permanent in this case, rather than temporary. Once Carol was entirely drained she fell into a catatonic state, while Rogue's mind was suddenly assaulted by Carol's personality and emotions competing with her own. Desperately hoping that killing Carol would silence the unwelcome presence inside her head, Rogue threw Carol's lifeless body off the Golden Gate Bridge.
Which has shown in the past that Rogue has beaten Ms Marvel before. All Rogue has to do is touch Ms Marvel and she gain the advantage.

Ms Marvel did hit her away, but she also lost to Rogue in that fight. Ms Marvel is strong, but Rogue can handle her in fight and she prove that before twice.

Starting without any powers well of course Captain Marvel, as she is now called would have the advantage, but Rogue has beaten her before. Also at Marvel any one can beat anyone else if it serves the storyline or an editorial agenda. If they can with a straight face say that Iron Man can defeat Magneto, even though when Magneto was one of the major villians in comics and no one person could take him down.

That was disgusting Magneto being beated by Iron Man. As if that can happen.
