Crane worked for years on a perfect mechanical body that could sustain a human brain. After being shot by some criminals who were trying to steel the robot body, his assistant put Crane's brain into the robot body. During World War 2 , he would join the All-Star Squadron. After the war his assistant died, and had his body frozen for Crane could use. Eventually Crane had his brain transplanted into his old assistant's body. He would also lend some of his components to Pat Dugan/ S.T.R.I.P.E. for his suite of armor.

Cliff Steele
The Robotman of the Doom Patrol first appeared in My Greatest Adventure vol 1 #80 (June, 1963).

When a fierce race car crash destroyed Cliff Steele's human body, his still-living brain was transplanted into a robotic body by Niles Caulder. Dubbed Robotman, he used his new mechanical strength and toughness to fight evil as a member of the Doom Patrol. While other members of the team were presumed dead in an explosion that threatened to claim a small fishing village, Robotman's damaged body washed ashore and was rebuilt by genius scientist Will Magnus. Since then, the tough-as-nails Robotman has been a lynch-pin through various new incarnations of the Doom Patrol.

Through years of shared tragedy, Robotman remained close with Beast Boy and has assisted the Titans on several missions, including the rescue of Mento from Madame Rouge and the final defeat of Brother Blood.
