'Robocop' Gets A Brand New Look

Posted by No_Name_ (16193 posts) - - Show Bio

We are literally a year away from the release of the Robocop movie and already we're beginning to see images from the set, concept art for the new Robocop suit and even the first movie poster -- and the movie has only just begun filming. Over the weekend we got our first look at actor Joel Kinnaman suited up and ready to channel his inner Murphy. The two set photos reveal the actor strutting around in a very different kind of suit that had a lot of fans scratching their heads wondering 'where is the iconic chrome Robocop suit?' Regardless of where the chrome is, the set photos gave us our first look at what Robocop will look like. The suit is very different from the original version featuring a sort of matte black plating. Definitely not what we would expect in a Robocop suit, but interesting, nonetheless.

We saw our first hint at what the suit would look like back in August, courtesy of FILMOPHILIA. The concept art depicted a darker suit with rigid plating (think Iron Man). While the finished product doesn't really look like the concept art we saw earlier this year, you can definitely see the resemblance between it and the finished product on the set of the film. However, while the concept art seems to resemble a heavy metal exterior, the set photos look more like a rubber suit. Then again, we can't expect a reboot of the film without some major changes being made.

== TEASER ==

Now, not everybody is down with major changes -- especially when these changes are being made to the iconic look of a character like Robocop whose suit has remained virtually the same throughout all three Robocop movies, an animated series and a comic book. However, change is inevitable, and we all expected the appearance of the character to change at least a little bit since he was being reintroduced to a whole new audience. Whether you like the new look or not is up to you, but it's hard to judge the costume without seeing it on the big screen. Remember what Chris Hemsworth looked like in those Thor leaked set images? Not nearly as cool as he did in the final product. Check out the images of Kinnaman suited up as well as photos of many props and vehicles from the set, below.

The concept art looks much better IMO

I'll buy that for a dollar

Looks like he underwent the Dredd treatment; Judge Robo :)

Well, I may be the only one, but I love the new look. It makes much more sense to me that Robocop look like this, since he is technically military grade hardware in this version - instead of the flashy chrome original that was not military grade. With the list of actors involved in this project, and the more militant look of both Robocop and ED209, I am really looking forward to this now.

Looks like an Ironman rip off!

Looks like a cross between Iron Man and those super suits used in G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

#10 Posted by wowylied (238 posts) - - Show Bio

It look really bad.

#11 Posted by Green ankh (1083 posts) - - Show Bio

the old one was cool !

#12 Posted by Aeroman (551 posts) - - Show Bio

If they improve I will think about watching it

#13 Posted by johnkmccubbin91 (3897 posts) - - Show Bio

It looks more modern but I'd have preferred it to at least look something like the original

Harry Osborn as American Son?

#15 Posted by DDangelico (234 posts) - - Show Bio

So THAT'S what happens when Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne get together...

I don't mind the new design, but it's incredibly strange that they didn't even try to incorporate any part of the iconic look of the old suit. You'd think they'd keep the visor or something.

Looks like a poor man's Iron Man.

#18 Posted by Decept-O (7827 posts) - - Show Bio

I won't buy that for a dollar....

Is this suit going to double for the drdd movie?

#20 Posted by RuinedGlory (35 posts) - - Show Bio

After seeing the concept art fully, the suit does look better. It keeps the silver in the suit somewhat to be respectful to the previous version but makes it more sleek and actual cop looking since most cop uniforms are completely black anyway. So it makes sense.

Plus the helmet looks accurate but more updated too. Overall, it looks fine.

Poor man's Iron man ha, the Iron man armour from the movies is poor man's iron man. This just doesn't feel very Robocop if you ask me.

I wouldn't go so far as to say change is inevitable. Just look at Michael Bay's TMNT movie. It's because of his change that it's seeing a slow death.

I'm not so concerned about the black suit as I am with the direction of the movie. The originals were so iconic because they were so cheesyball.

Guess i'm the only person that likes it.

#24 Posted by TDK_1997 (16121 posts) - - Show Bio

I like how it looks like.

mass effect armor?

#26 Posted by Osian2 (461 posts) - - Show Bio

That isn't Robocop that's Judge Dredd dressed as Batman.

#27 Posted by ARMIV2 (9276 posts) - - Show Bio

I like it. I really do.

#28 Posted by SuperDoahBoy (144 posts) - - Show Bio

I'm not sure if this is technically considered a remake or reboot, but it does make sense to change the look if that's what this is and I'm sure all of you complainers would complain about them ripping off the original or looking dated if he did look more like the original

@brightstarr731: I like it also cause it seems to fit in the direction they are going.

@kennyshat: I think they are planning to incorporate his inner leg mounted gun holster.

@RuinedGlory: I also like this cause it looks updated and I totally didn't think about how most cops nowadays do wear black.

@fACEmelter88: I like it too.

@chaos-soul: exactly what i thought. he needs to break out the omni-tool!

"YOUR MOVE, CREEP. *speech wheel opens up*"

#33 Posted by Bane694 (1 posts) - - Show Bio

I think it's cool that he isn't chromed anymore.

#34 Posted by starrk_coyote (652 posts) - - Show Bio

hhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmm...ok???? it looks kind cool to be honest, i give it a fair chance :)

#35 Posted by Smart_Dork_Dude (3166 posts) - - Show Bio

@starrk_coyote: Same here. I was never a HUGE fan of the original design, but hey it was an 80's franchise so it kinda worked. But keeping things looking JUST like they did in the 80's isn't a good idea on somethings. Imagine if they decided to go for the blue and grey costume for Nolan's Batman. Not a pretty picture is it?

#36 Posted by maxicere (998 posts) - - Show Bio

He is a mix between Nolan's Batman and Ironman armor. Creativity are dead in movies

I don't understand the hate. I think it looks fine.

#40 Posted by Vicfactotum (18 posts) - - Show Bio

Bleh. Not liking it so far. Original was too brutal.

#41 Posted by TheGodofThunder (689 posts) - - Show Bio

definitely doesn't have the intimidation factor the original had.

#42 Posted by Smurfboy (480 posts) - - Show Bio

I actually like the new looks of Robocop. Very interesting looking and can't wait to see him in action!

#43 Posted by warpgirl (53 posts) - - Show Bio

one of the great things about the original was that it didn't look like anything else that was out there. This looks so... generic.

#44 Posted by SuperDoahBoy (144 posts) - - Show Bio

@TheGodofThunder: The original was intimidating, until you saw how slow he walked. This one looks a lot more intimidating.

#45 Posted by JoseDRiveraTCR7 (1020 posts) - - Show Bio

Lame. He looks like a Batman ripoff and more like a guy in a suit than a robot.

#46 Posted by TheAmazingImmortalMan (4574 posts) - - Show Bio

I like this new look for Robocop.

#47 Posted by Mandrewgora (303 posts) - - Show Bio

Mr. Stark wants his armor back.

#48 Posted by dumbgreek (3 posts) - - Show Bio

So . . . they're making an X-O Manowar movie?

#49 Posted by Bogey (1022 posts) - - Show Bio

The costume designer must have lacked an imagination for Robocop.

#50 Edited by SuperDoahBoy (144 posts) - - Show Bio

@warpgirl: I'll agree that it does seem a bit generic, but it's still pretty early so they still have time to spruce things up. You make a good point about the original not looking like anything we had ever seen before back then, but that is also kinda why I'm not totally hating on all these remakes/reboot stuff. Cause up to this point we've seen just about everything and it's a difficult task coupled with a lot of pressure to create something new that hasn't already been done and not receive a lot of online hate for being a rip-off of something that has already been done.
