It seems the papparazzi are out in full force on the ROBOCOP set, doing everything and anything to catch a glimpse of actor Joel Kinnaman suited up as Murphy, a cop who is fatally injured and undergoes a surgical procedure that leaves "him half man, half machine and all cop."

    No Caption Provided

This isn't the first time we've seen images of the actor in full costume, and many have had complaints about the structure and color of the new suit. It's clear that the combination of matte and shiny black is a big digression from the classic metallic Robocop outfit we saw in the first three movies as well as in the comics. Is it really that bad though? We got a closer look at the actor's costume below and we'll let you be the judge. What do you think of the new, more modern Robocop? Do you like what you see, or are you one of the many who thinks they shouldn't have tampered with the original? Let us know in the comments.

ROBOCOP is set to hit theaters across the United States on August 9th, 2013 and will star actor Joel Kinnaman as Murphy, Samuel L. Jackson as Pat Novak, Gary Oldman as Dr. Robert Norton and Michael Keaton as Raymond Sellars. The film is being directed by Jose Padilha and is being produced by Columbia Pitcures, MGM and Strike Entertainment and is said to follow ROBOCOP 2.

Looks to me like a mix of iron man and snakeeyes. The black does make more sence than shinny gun metal in my mind, since police wear black.

That outfit looks more like something from Mass Effect than RoboCop.

Not liking it. As a RoboCop thing, I mean. If these were shots from a Mass Effect movie, then sure. But I just don't see why they had to change the design so much.

Too much different than the original. If it was a new concept entirely I probably would like it but as I like the original films (mainly first as Frank Miller ruined bits of the other 2) I'm not that keen on it

The robot protestors, though... Hope that's not a significant plotline.

I like this considerably more than the other version we saw a couple of weeks ago. With the red line through the visor it looks much more like Robocop. Leaving his right hand uncovered is... interesting.

EDIT: "...and is said to follow ROBOCOP 2." Does this mean, that they're taking the plot from Robocop 2 and doing it (with a reworked origin, I'm guessing) or that it's supposed to take place after it making it a Superman Returns-esque sequel reboot thing?

It looks very, very black. Personally, I preferred the gray. However, the actual design looks really cool.

    @csl316:

The original movie had lots of nods to things going on in the city without really making it a central element of the plot. Hopefully, the new franchise will do the same.

You know what? I'm OK with this look. If someone were to try and make a cyborg cop today he'd probably wind up looking more like this than the 80s version. This is what modern aesthetics says is cool and futuristic, so that's what Robocop has to evoke. If there's any vestige remaining of the old social commentary, then an overdesigned look for superficial marketing effect can be part of the text of the character.

Only two things bug me and they're right next to one another. First, the gun looks dumb. It looks like they're trying to evoke a revolver by bulging the slide on an automatic, which seems pointless to me. Hopefully I'm misreading it. Second is his pink, vulnerable man-hand. Robocop is supposed to be a nigh indestructible walking tank of a man, to the point where showing his mouth in the old movies seemed odd and incongruous. However, he could still punch through a brick wall with either hand. This Robocop might have super strength in his left arm, but if he's walking around with an exposed normal hand he remains weirdly vulnerable.

I like the actual design on his armor but I don't like it being all black. They should throw in some silver to make his color scheme resemble the original. I also don't like his hands being exposed like that. Other than that it looks surprisingly good, IMO.

I could care less if the character design resembles the original Robocop. That wouldn't make a heck of a lot of sense in my mind, since the original design was influenced heavily by 80s asthetics. Additionally, the armor was bulky and very hard to move in, which required a dance instructor just to teach the actor how to move in it.

I'm not saying any of this as a slight against the original Robocop.

What I'm saying is, sure this movie can't be judged truly on its own merit since it's a remake. But, at the same time, the character design also shouldn't be a copy of the original. Specifically, they should make good use of the advances we've made in technology to make it more maneuverable. I'd love to see a little more color in the armor rather than matte and gloss blacks, but who's to say that this is the way it looks throughout the whole film. Besides, things often look different on film than in stills.

An important point you all seem to be missing is that the suit will undoubtedly be significantly touched-up with CG in post. Related to that, his hand is probably only uncovered because it would be awkward to hold & manoeuvre the gun properly with big chunky robot gloves on.

Other than that... he looks like a VR Trooper. http://www.comicvine.com/vr-troopers/65-58227/images/
