It seems the papparazzi are out in full force on the ROBOCOP set, doing everything and anything to catch a glimpse of actor Joel Kinnaman suited up as Murphy, a cop who is fatally injured and undergoes a surgical procedure that leaves "him half man, half machine and all cop."

This isn't the first time we've seen images of the actor in full costume, and many have had complaints about the structure and color of the new suit. It's clear that the combination of matte and shiny black is a big digression from the classic metallic Robocop outfit we saw in the first three movies as well as in the comics. Is it really that bad though? We got a closer look at the actor's costume below and we'll let you be the judge. What do you think of the new, more modern Robocop? Do you like what you see, or are you one of the many who thinks they shouldn't have tampered with the original? Let us know in the comments.

ROBOCOP is set to hit theaters across the United States on August 9th, 2013 and will star actor Joel Kinnaman as Murphy, Samuel L. Jackson as Pat Novak, Gary Oldman as Dr. Robert Norton and Michael Keaton as Raymond Sellars. The film is being directed by Jose Padilha and is being produced by Columbia Pitcures, MGM and Strike Entertainment and is said to follow ROBOCOP 2.

I still think it looks like they painted Superman's New 52 costume black.

looks ok

Looks to me like a mix of iron man and snakeeyes. The black does make more sence than shinny gun metal in my mind, since police wear black.

Can't really say I like it that much really.

LOL @ the "God hates robots!" sign.

That outfit looks more like something from Mass Effect than RoboCop.

Not liking it. As a RoboCop thing, I mean. If these were shots from a Mass Effect movie, then sure. But I just don't see why they had to change the design so much.

#7 Posted by johnkmccubbin91 (3486 posts) - - Show Bio

Too much different than the original. If it was a new concept entirely I probably would like it but as I like the original films (mainly first as Frank Miller ruined bits of the other 2) I'm not that keen on it

#8 Posted by kartron (420 posts) - - Show Bio

looks like an alien costume more than Robocop's.. only thing resembling to original is the eye portion...

#9 Posted by jesse10022 (17 posts) - - Show Bio

People need to let go of the past. It looks WAY BETTER than the clunky original and you damn well know it whether you want to admit it or not.

@MooseyMcMan: thats it. ME. couldnt put my finger on it. thanks man.

#11 Posted by neiliusprime (247 posts) - - Show Bio

I don't like it, looks like a combination of iron man armor and the dark knight rises suit. If they threw a little silver on the suit it would probably look better

#12 Posted by ARMIV2 (8279 posts) - - Show Bio

I hope they give him some gloves. It'll really kinda bug me if he doesn't get some gloves.

#13 Posted by Aiden Cross (15562 posts) - - Show Bio

Looks more like a high tech suit than a half man/half robot type thing.

#14 Posted by longbowhunter (6725 posts) - - Show Bio

I like everything but the color.

#15 Posted by Inverno (13057 posts) - - Show Bio

Loved this costume. I am okay with the color I wouldn't mind if they changed to chrome later.

yeah the old armour looks way too silly, it would make the movie bomb at the box office

That suit is gonna look great once they put the Bat symbol on it.

#18 Posted by csl316 (168 posts) - - Show Bio

Looks interesting, though it'll probably look better in action.

The robot protestors, though... Hope that's not a significant plotline.

I like this considerably more than the other version we saw a couple of weeks ago. With the red line through the visor it looks much more like Robocop. Leaving his right hand uncovered is... interesting.

EDIT: "...and is said to follow ROBOCOP 2." Does this mean, that they're taking the plot from Robocop 2 and doing it (with a reworked origin, I'm guessing) or that it's supposed to take place after it making it a Superman Returns-esque sequel reboot thing?

#20 Posted by Dernman (14720 posts) - - Show Bio

I think it should have been a combination of the old and new costumes. Right now he doesn't look like a RoboCop but more like a guy in armor.

I JUST NOTICE SOMETHING!!!!
 They didn't turn a man into a cyborg/robot.
They turned Kitt from Knight Rider into a man.

#23 Posted by BatWatch (2364 posts) - - Show Bio

It looks very, very black. Personally, I preferred the gray. However, the actual design looks really cool.

@csl316:

The original movie had lots of nods to things going on in the city without really making it a central element of the plot. Hopefully, the new franchise will do the same.

#24 Posted by Foggen (15 posts) - - Show Bio

You know what? I'm OK with this look. If someone were to try and make a cyborg cop today he'd probably wind up looking more like this than the 80s version. This is what modern aesthetics says is cool and futuristic, so that's what Robocop has to evoke. If there's any vestige remaining of the old social commentary, then an overdesigned look for superficial marketing effect can be part of the text of the character.

Only two things bug me and they're right next to one another. First, the gun looks dumb. It looks like they're trying to evoke a revolver by bulging the slide on an automatic, which seems pointless to me. Hopefully I'm misreading it. Second is his pink, vulnerable man-hand. Robocop is supposed to be a nigh indestructible walking tank of a man, to the point where showing his mouth in the old movies seemed odd and incongruous. However, he could still punch through a brick wall with either hand. This Robocop might have super strength in his left arm, but if he's walking around with an exposed normal hand he remains weirdly vulnerable.

@Dernman...LOL!...You just ruined the whole thing for me. Now all I see is a walking Knight Rider "Kitt" car!

@elayem98: Exactly! Thank you! This armor looks sick. Loving the red eye line.

#27 Posted by Pacperson (307 posts) - - Show Bio

It just look too much like a battle suit to me...just doesn't seem like a robotic man...just seems like a suit.

#28 Posted by Outside_85 (8092 posts) - - Show Bio

I hope it looks better on screen, those make him look like a cosplayer in a plastic outfit :S

#29 Posted by GR2Blackout (2564 posts) - - Show Bio

So... it's gonna be like the whole "Mutants Suck" from X-Men... except... robots?

Ehhhhhh..........

#30 Posted by bloggerboy (536 posts) - - Show Bio

I hated Dredd's costume but the movie was good.

I like Robocop's costume...so the movie will suck?

#31 Posted by FoxxFireArt (3546 posts) - - Show Bio

I don't mind the black armor. It's just weird that his right hand isn't covored.

I've been losing any enthusiasm for this remake when I've heard they plan to make it PG-13.

#32 Posted by Smurfboy (480 posts) - - Show Bio

I love new looks of Robocop!! Can't wait for the trailer.

eeeehhhh.

#34 Posted by Xanni15 (6758 posts) - - Show Bio

Not even comparing it to the original, I think this suit looks awful.

#35 Posted by ArtisticNeedham (2232 posts) - - Show Bio

I wonder about the hand though.

#36 Posted by xanthiss (177 posts) - - Show Bio

God hates Robots. Who knew?

#37 Posted by GillaDro (233 posts) - - Show Bio

Looks more like body armor than a robot. And I dont believe Robocop had any real hands. His brain and face were the only human parts left.

Look's like a cross between Iron man Armor and P5 Cyclops without the Red Symbols. I can see it now, a Tony Stark lawsuit is coming!

#40 Posted by Darkseid_Beyond (14 posts) - - Show Bio

I like the actual design on his armor but I don't like it being all black. They should throw in some silver to make his color scheme resemble the original. I also don't like his hands being exposed like that. Other than that it looks surprisingly good, IMO.

#41 Posted by ClintsEvilTwin (76 posts) - - Show Bio

Design is cool. Needs gloves or something. The bare hands look stupid.

I wanna see a new version of ED-209

#42 Posted by n25philly (91 posts) - - Show Bio

Looks better than the captain america costume from avengers. I'll wait to see it in the movie to decide if I like it, these tend to always look worse in these preview shots than on the screen.

Robo Scott ? :P

#46 Posted by Crash_Recovery (850 posts) - - Show Bio

I could care less if the character design resembles the original Robocop. That wouldn't make a heck of a lot of sense in my mind, since the original design was influenced heavily by 80s asthetics. Additionally, the armor was bulky and very hard to move in, which required a dance instructor just to teach the actor how to move in it.

I'm not saying any of this as a slight against the original Robocop.

What I'm saying is, sure this movie can't be judged truly on its own merit since it's a remake. But, at the same time, the character design also shouldn't be a copy of the original. Specifically, they should make good use of the advances we've made in technology to make it more maneuverable. I'd love to see a little more color in the armor rather than matte and gloss blacks, but who's to say that this is the way it looks throughout the whole film. Besides, things often look different on film than in stills.

Was the paparazzi dude literally hanging out in a tree when he took these pictures?

#48 Edited by Quater (1 posts) - - Show Bio

An important point you all seem to be missing is that the suit will undoubtedly be significantly touched-up with CG in post. Related to that, his hand is probably only uncovered because it would be awkward to hold & manoeuvre the gun properly with big chunky robot gloves on.

Other than that... he looks like a VR Trooper. http://www.comicvine.com/vr-troopers/65-58227/images/

Without some kind of accents or logo or badge, he looks like some kind of superhero prototype that never became official.
