    R. Crumb was born Robert Dennis Crumb on August 30, 1943. Crumb was a founder and, arguably, most famous artist of the Underground “comix” movement. He was living in Cleveland, Ohio, in the mid-60's, designing greeting cards for the American Greetings corporation, when he met a group of bohemians who encouraged him to contribute to one of the then-popular underground newspapers, Philadelphia's YARROWSTALKS.

From there, Crumb moved to San Francisco, California where he published the first issue of ZAP COMIX in 1968 and proceeded to invent unforgettable counter-culture characters such as Mr. Natural, Devil Girl and Fritz the Cat. He also illustrated the album covers for two of the biggest rock bands of the 60’s, The Grateful Dead and Big Brother and the Holding Company.

Other less-known works in Crumb’s arsenal include the intensely intellectual, INTRODUCING KAFKA and R. CRUMB’S SEX OBSESSIONS, a collection of sexually-charged drawings and strips released by Taschen in 2007.

In 1994, Terry Zwigoff produced a film documentary entitled CRUMB, which garnered critical acclaim around the world.

In late 2009, he was on tour to promote his latest book The Book of Genesis Illustrated.

Crumb was inducted into the Eisner Awards' Comic Hall of Fame in 1991. His 1996 Complete Crumb Comics vol. 11 won the 1996 Eisner Award for Best Archival Collection.
