Funny how a comic about a bunch of jerky villains can be so good. The writing and art have really been something. Norman Osborn is just a time bomb waiting to explode. I suppose you can say the same about Penance. A couple of whack-jobs hanging around each other. Tick, tick, tick...
The government sponsored superhero team known as the Thunderbolts confront the problem that is Penance’s fractured psyche in Thunderbolts #117, by dream team Warren Ellis & Mike Deodato! Robbie Baldwin’s transformation into the tortured—and immensely powerful—hero known as Penance has taken its toll, causing Baldwin to lash out at Norman Osborn and almost destroy the Thunderbolts’ base. Now there’s only one man who can put him back together! Enter Doc Samson, the man whose past super human counseling clients include The Hulk and X-Factor, and who may just face his greatest challenge yet with Penance! However, if he does succeed, what does that mean for Osborn’s plans to manipulate Penance? And just why are the Thunderbolts having such an easy time bringing in unregistered super humans? The answers become clearer in the second chapter of “Caged Angels,” the newest arc in the series that critics and fans can’t stop praising!
Itai Rosenbaum of SilverBulletComics.Com gushed, “Thunderbolts is the best book Marvel currently publishes… Warren Ellis does an excellent job channeling the psychopaths inhabiting the pages of this book.”
IGN.Com’s Jesse Schedeen awarded the series his highest possible rating of “Must Have” and said, “I really hope Mike Deodato, Jr. stays on this book as long as possible.”
And don’t miss Thunderbolts By Warren Ellis Vol. 1: Faith In Monsters Premiere HC, collecting Ellis & Deodato’s first gripping arc on Thunderbolts. But now that Penance has been contained, can he be rehabilitated…or will he bring the Thunderbolts down? It’s all revealed in Thunderbolts #117!

I have sort of mixed feelings about Robbie Baldwin, AKA Penance. I wasn't a huge Speedball fan or anything. I liked how they hinted that he had the potential to be soooo powerful. Guess that's what we're seeing now. What I don't like is how they've (the Marvel Universe and the writers) have pooped all over him and the New Warriors. But we know it's really all Tony Stark's fault. I'm not sure if I really like the Penance persona. The whole, "Hurt me baby, make me feel pain" thing is just boring. And now he has all these piercings? I don't even want to know if he has them anyplace besides his face.
So here we're going to get a mini-series on him and all his quircks. There better be some major action if he does go toe-to-toe with Norman Osborn.
From the pages of Civil War, Robbie Baldwin, the man blamed for the Stamford tragedy, has assumed the guise of Penance and it’s time for him to embark on a quest of redemption in Penance: Relentless #1 (of 5). From Civil War: Front Line scribe Paul Jenkins and fan favorite artist Paul Gulacy comes this tale of one man’s slow descent into madness, obsession and perhaps the end of life as he knows it! When Penance takes one of the Thunderbolts’ missions into his own hands he puts himself on a collision course with Norman Osborn—better known as the Green Goblin—and it’s a battle of wills that will leave one man defeated!
He’s the most hated man in America must now face off against possibly the most dangerous team in America, as Penance experiences visions leading him on a mission of life or death! What do the numbers in his visions mean? This fall, Penance: Relentless #1 (of 5) puts Robbie Baldwin on a path that will leave him forever changed!
And don’t miss Thunderbolts By Warren Ellis Vol.1: Faith In Monsters Premiere HC, collecting the first arc of Warren Ellis’ acclaimed run on Thunderbolts, in which we learn more about man now called Penance!

This has been such a great comic. I really hope everyone is reading it. You know something is gonna go down with Norman Osborn. What about Bullseye. He got beat pretty bad. Sure it wasn't completely fair but he's not going out dancing anytime soon. And what's up with Mac Gargan/Venom EATING the Steel Spider's arm? Uhm...gross?
Bullseye is crippled. Venom ate the Steel Spider's arm. And Penance is in a downward spiral of guilt. Clearly, writer Warren Ellis' Thunderbolts are not a model of teamwork! To add insult to injury, more madness is brought to their doorstep in Thunderbolts #116 when Thunderbolt Mountain is converted to a temporary prison for detained superhumans. Red-hot writer Warren Ellis and brilliant artist Mike Deodato bring you part one of the new arc "Caged Angels," which is sure to heat up the action for Marvel's most notorious team - but can these out-of-control "heroes" handle it?
The Thunderbolts are one of the most effective and most popular teams in the Initiative, but when the Negative Zone prison 42 reaches capacity, the Tbolts are forced to share their headquarters with even more supervillains. The Thunderbolts themselves are prisoners so when all of these combustible elements are under the same roof , things just might be ready to blow!
The critics continue to praise the Thunderbolts, and Luke Handley of SilverBulletComicBooks.com calls Thunderbolts #115 the "best read [he's] had in a long time." Shawn Hill of SilverBulletComicBooks.com commends Deodato's art stating, "It's dark, gritty and right. I can't think of anyone else who could carry this book so well."
After the devastating events of the "Faith in Monsters" story arc, can Norman Osborn actually pull the team of misfits together when they all have their own agendas? Will Bullseye ever recover from the merciless beating he received from American Eagle? With so many super humans gathered at Thunderbolts Mountain, things are bound to get out of hand in Thunderbolts #116!

This ought to be good. Nova better smash these guys. I mean if Jack Flag can give them a fight and Steel Spider...
Since returning to Earth, the intergalactic lawman known as Nova has been confronted with the post-Civil War Marvel Universe, parents who no longer recognize their son and the not-so-subtle recruiting efforts from Iron Man himself. However, in Nova #3, a tie-in to the mega popular The Initiative storyline, Richard Rider must confront a larger issue—the government sponsored Thunderbolts, a collection of some of the world’s most dangerous villains…including Nova’s former teammate Speedball (now known as Penance)!
“Writers Dan Abnett and Andy Landing are expertly raising the stakes with each issue,” said editor Bill Rosemann. “The first issue ended with Iron Man promising to investigate Rich’s return to Earth. Issue #2 ended with the unexpected arrival of the Thunderbolts and Rich’s former pal Penance. So how will they end issue #3? By leading readers right into the madness that is Annihilation: Conquest!”
It’s the Initiative, the Thunderbolts and a clash between former New Warriors teammates—what more could you ask for? It’s the latest issue of the series that has sold out back-to-back as readership rises and has Newsarama.com’s Lucas Siegel saying, “I can’t wait for #3” and Comixtreme.com’s Adam Chapman exclaiming, “Can't wait to see what happens next issue.” The Human Rocket is back on Earth, but if the Thunderbolts have their way, he’ll be buried in it!
