Young Avengers #2 - DYS Review

Wiccan wasn't going to use his powers anymore. He sure did make a big mess last issue when he decided to use them.

The Good

What happens when things don't go the way you planned? Last issue Wiccan decided to try to rescue Hulkling's mom. He did, from an alternate dimension. Unfortunately things turn out pretty badly. The nice thing about this is it becomes apparent immediately. Too many times in the past, we've seen situations like these drag on for a bit. Billy and Teddy know something's wrong and try to get to the bottom of things right away. It's also great to see that these young heroes know when they're in over their heads. After their first attempt doesn't quite work out, they turn to the Avengers. This was a connection that was firmly established at the end of AVENGERS: THE CHILDREN'S CRUSADE.

Jamie McKelvie's take on the characters is great. Seeing how the Avengers look corresponds to the team in UNCANNY AVENGERS. It's tiny details like this that can add that little extra something to an issue.

What about Loki? The scene in which he comes into contact with Wiccan was great to see. Whenever artists try to mix things up and succeed in giving us something different, it's a treat.

The Bad

Last issue I felt we were off to a good start. With the focus on Teddy's evil mom...some of the excitement seems to have disappeared. The story mainly focuses on Wiccan and Hulkling. Loki puts in a brief appearance towards the end but that's it. No sign of Kate, Noh-Varr or Miss America. There is a simple mention of a text from Kate. It feels a little odd for the start of a new series.

Teddy's mom as the main villain just doesn't impress me. It's added a good angle to the story and there will be repercussions for Wiccan but perhaps after the first issue, I just expected a little more here.

The Verdict

After enjoying the first issue, my hopes may have gotten too high for this one. I really want to enjoy this series but the main focus of the 'villain' didn't quite do it for me. The way Wiccan and Hulkling try dealing with the situation is great even if it doesn't get a chance to go too far. The lack of other characters seen in the first issue makes this second issue of a new series feel like quite a bit is missing. While we can't expect all members of a team book to always be present, there should be more development on the characters for new readers to the series. The art is great and the way the issue ends makes you want to see the next issue. It's just unfortunate we didn't have a little more in this issue.

The first issue was a pain for me, I had to force my way through it.

"Children's Crusade" Young Avengers #1 It looks like whenever Wiccan uses his powers it becomes crux of the story. Hopefully the rest of the series isn't he does something dumb with his powers and then everyone has to spend 4-5 issues cleaning it up.

I actually really liked it.

Can we just take a moment to applaud Jamie McKelvie for being basically the only person EVER to draw Scarlet Witch and not have her look utterly ridiculous (and in this case, she actually looks kind of awesome)?

I'm going to wait and see if anyone gets the joke.

*Sigh* I want to read Young Avengers not Wiccan and Hulkling

I thought this was great too. It's very different to the other Young Avengers series but that's not a bad thing in my mind.

I thought the layouts were fantastic in this. From what I remember Jamie McKelvie and Kieron Gillen are working marvel style for this series.

It was actually Pancake Ladies on the recap page, but that's also good.

I think this series is going to be great. If they want to focus on Wiccan and Hulkling then I love it. I am sure the others will start appearing prominently though.

So far I'm really loving the new series... The writing and art style is like nothing I've read before, and I also think Gillen is one of few writers who actually makes teenagers seem like real teenagers, not what we all think teenagers are.

Also I'm not going to spoil, but saying that the villain is Teddy's mom is misleading... Loki explained what she really is, and it seems like a pretty interesting Villain to me

I will admit I found it odd that only half the 'team' showed up in the issue, but it didn't ruin the comic for me

I'm really looking forward to more

Miss America looks like Jenny from the block on the second cover XD me gusta

I tried giving this a shot because Kid Loki is in it but I just cant get into it for the main reason I didnt like Childrens Crusade; I cant stand Wiccan and Hulkling. It seems like they are always whining and moping around and they almost always find a way to annoy me. I may give it another issue to pick up because Loki is still in it and I really like Kate Bishop in the new Hawkeye series. On a positive note though I REALLY dug the art on the 2 pages with Loki busting Wiccan out of his prison.

It was an okay issue I guess, although Teddy seemed kinda eager to punch his Mom in the face, she was just being fairly Mom-ish (granted a little OTT) and he punched her right in the face! Felt very forced.

I really want young Vision to come back and take on the appearance of the White Vision so he doesn't get confused with the original.
