What happens when things don't go the way you planned? Last issue Wiccan decided to try to rescue Hulkling's mom. He did, from an alternate dimension. Unfortunately things turn out pretty badly. The nice thing about this is it becomes apparent immediately. Too many times in the past, we've seen situations like these drag on for a bit. Billy and Teddy know something's wrong and try to get to the bottom of things right away. It's also great to see that these young heroes know when they're in over their heads. After their first attempt doesn't quite work out, they turn to the Avengers. This was a connection that was firmly established at the end of AVENGERS: THE CHILDREN'S CRUSADE.
Jamie McKelvie's take on the characters is great. Seeing how the Avengers look corresponds to the team in UNCANNY AVENGERS. It's tiny details like this that can add that little extra something to an issue.
What about Loki? The scene in which he comes into contact with Wiccan was great to see. Whenever artists try to mix things up and succeed in giving us something different, it's a treat.
Last issue I felt we were off to a good start. With the focus on Teddy's evil mom...some of the excitement seems to have disappeared. The story mainly focuses on Wiccan and Hulkling. Loki puts in a brief appearance towards the end but that's it. No sign of Kate, Noh-Varr or Miss America. There is a simple mention of a text from Kate. It feels a little odd for the start of a new series.
Teddy's mom as the main villain just doesn't impress me. It's added a good angle to the story and there will be repercussions for Wiccan but perhaps after the first issue, I just expected a little more here.
After enjoying the first issue, my hopes may have gotten too high for this one. I really want to enjoy this series but the main focus of the 'villain' didn't quite do it for me. The way Wiccan and Hulkling try dealing with the situation is great even if it doesn't get a chance to go too far. The lack of other characters seen in the first issue makes this second issue of a new series feel like quite a bit is missing. While we can't expect all members of a team book to always be present, there should be more development on the characters for new readers to the series. The art is great and the way the issue ends makes you want to see the next issue. It's just unfortunate we didn't have a little more in this issue.
