X-Men: Legacy #275 - Era Review

5

Rogue and Mimic team up to fight a riot, and Rogue shows just how great of a leader she really is.

The Good

One of the great things about X-MEN LEGACY is that Rogue is front and center as the leader of the team. It's great to see her in this position. I think the writers have developed her character into an individual with fantastic leadership skills. The story opens with her front and center, talking to Mimic. It's great to see these two interact and writer Christos Gage draw a comparison between these two based on their powers and skill sets. Mimic and Rogue do have a lot in common, and it's good to see them interact. It's up to Mimic and Rogue to fight off a riot of super-powered criminals, and things get pretty crazy in this issue. I think one of the best things about this issue (besides the cameos and crazy action-packed panels), is the fact that Gage knows how to write Rogue really well. There's a great scene halfway through the comic where she stands before imprisoned mutants and gives a great speech on why they should side with her. It's a really powerful moment that conveys just how strong of a leader she really is, especially considering everything she's been through.

David Baldeon's pencils, Jordi Tarragona's inks and Rachelle Rosenberg's colors are absolutely stunning. The talents of each of these artists is really evident, and these three work well together to deliver some truly gorgeous comic book art. The scenes are illustrated clearly, organized well, and the emotions of the characters are clearly conveyed through the art. The art in this book is superbly done.

Oh, and can I just say that it was pretty awesome seeing Rogue consume the powers of all these different mutants to become one giant, menacing, ugly mutant that kicks all types of butt? I think it's important to note that while the comic does focus on Rogue's leadership abilities as this character that can kick a lot of butt; I think the fact that she is able to be there as a shoulder for Mimic to lean on (particularly in the end) and give him some great advice goes to show just how great of a leader she has become.

The Bad

Nothing bad to say about this issue; well written and beautifully illustrated. A fitting end to a very long series.

The Verdict

If you love Rogue and you want to really see her in action, this is definitely the book for you. Like I said above, not only does she kick all kinds of butt in this issue; but she is also portrayed as a character that has her stuff together. She's grown up a lot, and she demonstrates that she is able to be a great leader both on and off the battlefield. Great characterization of Rogue in this issue and an awesome team-up between Rogue and Mimic make this a solid issue. Pair this great story with some beautiful art, and you have a winning book.

As the last issue of X-MEN LEGACY before the launch of Marvel NOW!, this is certainly a great end to this solid series. The conclusion feels appropriate and definitive. This is just a really well executed final issue.

5 stars? Really? Wow. Just wow. Giving this book a perfect rating is stunning to me. I thought this last year and a half of stories have been the worst Legacy has ever been. This issue being no exception. The constant shoving down our throats about how amazing Rogue is, that awful love triangle that dragged on for a year longer than it should have, and the rest of the book's cast getting shoved into irrelevance was all terrible writing. Thankfully it seems Rememder is going to ignore her Mar Sue-like characterization here for his UA book.

I wasnt interested before but five stars has me wondering if I'm missing out...

@The Last Arashikage: Pick up the trades. It's about to switch over to starring Legacy himself. It's been downhill since Carey left, imo.

I would not go that far, but I agree the Rogue-centric arc has been pretty dull. Her transition from generic X-person to now teacher and leader of the year has pretty much come out of nowhere and made up on the spot. No team book should have so much focus on one character, there are many others just languishing.

@Brazen_Intellect: The book had an interesting cast and I think they could have really told some interesting stories if they would have spread the focus around a bit. Real shame they didn't. I think after Schism the book should have shifted focus to someone else (maybe Rachel given she could have used more focus in AvX), but it's just just after Schism the book became so stagnant so quickly and it seems like they were just putting in filler waiting around for Marvel Now to kick in.

Five stars is a laugh. This book has been junky since Gage took over and I'm glad it's getting rebooted. It had promise with it crossing over with the phenomenal WatXM but Gage forced a bunch of Rogue relationship junk at us, uninspired fights, a "Rogue Carter from Mars" sidestory which was totally pointless, and now at the finish line a heavy handed "you have to find yourself" message to close out an already lifeless final chapter of what used to be an amazing series.

Wow, cancelling another hit X-book. Historic. :(

I've only seen average-to-poor reviews of this title, so I doubt it's a 5 star book as described. I feel Rick Remender has the same opinion, since it seems like his Rogue is disconnected from the one shown here in several respects, which, knowing him, will be for the better. Maybe with the renewed focus, this book could be great, but there's enough X-books with proven quality out already.

never liked rouge

@liquid3601: I agree. I think this particular issue was probably 5 stars compared to the "Rogue Carter from Mars" sidestory but probably 2 stars compared to an actual 5 star comic. I hope someone does something with Mimic though. I loved the way he was originally protrayed in Exiles back in the day. In the right hands, he could be a great character.

5 stars??? Really???

Just finished reading it and it was awful. Really, really awful. Gage cannot write dialogue. He has no subtlety. Rogue's speech in front of the prisoners was one of the worst offenders. It's so patronizing, schmaltzy and trite. It's the sort of 'empowering' dialog that you get in really bad daytime soap operas. Gage has taken what should be a complex, multi-layered, nuanced character and turned her into a platitude spouting idiot. When she's not spouting Oprah-style self help gibberish to other characters, Gage has an enraging habit of giving her panel after panel of expository monologue (the kind of stuff you used to get in the 60's!).

No way was this a 5 star issue. I challenge anyone to read it and be able to compare the quality to the likes of Remender's Uncanny X-Force or Brubakers Captain America or Kirkman's Walking Dead and still give this comic a 5 star review.

Gage = Baaaad writer. 2 stars at best (mainly for the artwork).

@x_29: C'mon, if you have something to contribute, I encourage you to do so. It's the reviewer's opinion and it's not fair to insult them based on it.
