X-Men: Days of Future Past

4

It's up to Wolverine and some X-Men in the past to save the future.

Let’s be honest, the X-Men movies are a bit of a mess. With the different movies in different eras, you sometimes find yourself asking what is or isn’t canon? X-Men: Days of Future Past has the task to not only juggle the past First Class characters and the future versions but there’s also the ‘present day’ versions from the original movies to think about. Can this movie tie everything together? Yes and no. But that’s not necessarily something to spend too much time worrying about.

No Caption Provided

You can easily say this is an ambitious movie. Besides attempting to adapt a classic and well known story, there simply is a lot of ground to cover in the different time periods. My fear was we’d only get a tiny glimpse at the future world as it was clear from the trailers the majority of the focus would be in the past with Wolverine, Professor X, Magneto. Thankfully, this wasn’t the case.

The movie starts off showing the grim and desolate apocalyptic future the few remaining X-Men have to deal with. We see some familiar faces as past actors have returned and there’s a really cool opening battle. What’s refreshing is having the movie occasionally flip back and forth between the past and the future. It’s not always at the most ideal moments and there can be some jarring transitions but the main crux of the story is changing the future is dependent on the past events. Besides allowing us to see the future mutants in action, it reminds us how much is really at stake.

No Caption Provided

Unfortunately some of the mutants in the future are not allowed to be fleshed out. Having Daniel Cudmore return as Colossus is great but he’s only allowed action scenes because of the dire nature of the future. Blink was another great character to see in action. Quicksilver may have been a huge departure from his comic book counterpart but that can be slightly overlooked with how enjoyable a character he was and how cool seeing him in action was.

Other “new” mutants such as Bishop and Warpath felt like they were there just to add more to the roster. As much as we get to keep jumping back to the future, it would have been nice to see a little more of the time explored. Were the mutants put in camps by the Sentinels? Were these last remaining X-Men all the mutants that were left? How did the mutant that sends Wolverine’s mind back able to do so? Secondary mutation? (I won’t mention who in case it’s a bit of a spoiler). These are small concerns but ones you’ll be thinking about.

The meat of the movie deals with 1973. That makes this about ten years after First Class. If you were wondering about the other mutants from that movie not in this one, there is an explanation. The main focus is on Wolverine, Professor X, Beast, and Magneto trying to stop Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask, which would lead to the dark future. Realistically, yes, these are the main and important characters returning from First Class (with one other exception reduced to a cameo) plus, of course Wolverine.

No Caption Provided

The problem with this small band of mutants trying to stop a horrible future is it feels as if they’re not taking it completely seriously. We know the status of the other mutants from First Class but with so much at stake, was there really no one else that could help? Quicksilver may have been too young but his powers could have made things easier.

Compared to other X-Men movies (which I’ve recently re-watched most), I could say this might be my favorite one. We have a deep story and don’t have to sit through character origins. There are some minor plot holes in it but it can be overlooked as you watch everything play out. We have a nice mix of action with the story. We don’t get to see Wolverine fully lash out in the past and only get a few moments of Beast in action but we do get to see the story get fleshed out.

As for what this movie means to the entire X-Men movie universe and continuity…that’s an interesting thing to think about.

Days of Future Past is one of the most cherished stories that could be adapted for the big screen. It was an ambitious decision and the filmmakers and actors pulled it off, for the most part. We do have some obvious departures and changes that are necessary for the movie to work. These can be overlooked because you simply have fun while watching. While I have enjoyed most of the past X-Men movies, I would watch them and then want some time to pass before watching again. With Days of Future Past, I’m ready to watch it all over again.

And yes, there is an after-the-credits scene you won't want to miss.

Absolutely love this movie. I still think First Class is the strongest overall and most fun film in the franchise, but this one also deserves huge credit for being as ambitious as it is and still sticking the landing. All the new mutants work really well onscreen, and though I wish there had been a little more character development, I realize that would have been an impossible task in a movie this plot heavy. I'd put it at number 3 of overall best comic films of all time after First Class and Dark Knight Rises.

The only real problem the movie has, and everything considered I barely care, is that they frequently reference X3 The Last Stand, but do not explain away any of the inconsistencies, such as why Professor X has returned to his own body.

Also, I'm kind of getting the feeling that the army group with Havok and Toad may become the 4 horsemen in the next film.

@hellos:I dont know about performance, but one nitpick I have with this film is how they depicted Ice-man's death it really doesn't make any sense. So the sentinels used fire against him right? That makes no sense at all because in Last Stand when he was against Pyro he just went full Ice and knocked him out...

I'd assume they just burn significantly hotter than Pyro - which is a fair assumption since their energy blasts have way better showings in this film than I recall Pyro ever having with his flame-thrower back-pack. Here they're just melting through reinforced barriers / doors - after surviving what appeared to be a nuke without much hassle.

Sentinels were crazy over-powered in this film. The nuke killed a few of them, but they bounced back without issue.

This is probably one of my favorite X-Men movies that I've seen to date (besides X-2). The only problem I had in this film was Bishop. I mean what was the point of having him if he didn't travel to the past to tell the younger mutants and fix it? Wasn't Days of Future Past mostly resolved around him anyways?

I like how this movie pumps some much needed blood into the franchise (both past and present). Retcons X-Men 2, X3: LS and without a doubt The Wolverine. And it looks like Magneto's brotherhood is going to get a solid team together with his kids.

Xavier's dialogue at the end of the film rung so true. And that acting... I wish more super hero films had that much emotion come out of their characters - rather than shouting.

The Nightcrawler X-2 scene was good, it's just that the Quicksilver cameo had a great deal of personality, a cool showcase of said powers, nods to fans as to who his father is and a solid performance behind it.

I give a 4 out of 5. It does not entirely do the source material justice by changing certain things up, but the story appeared out of this was a fun one that raised the stakes more so than all of the previous X-Men movies. And it maybe up to Wolverine, and maybe not. I would have liked to have seen more to the critical roles of the plot, but the what took place was good. The story didn't always make sense, but between the care given to characters and the story, it can be overlooked for moments. The acting and direction were on top of things, though I still think there may be another woman out there who could pull off an amazing Kitty Pryde other than Ellen Page, but I'll take it for now. Back on track, it was fun movie that moved things forward from the past. And so much good is done to the franchise.

The movie is filled with flaws. However, if the audience member is willing to overlook each flawed detail then the film is pretty good.

I enjoyed the film a great deal and would recommend it but only if one is open minded and willing to overlook the flawed details.

Although, Quicksilver does look ridiculous, he was one of my favorite parts in the movie. I enjoyed all the cameos, they felt natural, organic , and pure fan service.

THese cameos did not feel forced like X3's or X-Men Origins' did.

I can't wait to see HowItShouldHaveEnded (HISHE) make a video for this film to poke fun at its flaws.

Oh, lastly, the film made me a bigger fan of Charles Xavier.

This film is complete garbage. I went in hoping for a decent amount of action, and some spotlight on characters other than Wolverine, Professor X and Magneto, and the only person that gets a look in is Mystique and Quicksilver (for a short while). There's a small skirmish at both ends of the film and nothing in between, in short it was BORRRRRRRRRING as anything. Vaughn had a completely different direction and would have kept the original First Class cast, but that wasn't enough for Singer, the moron had to ruin it!

@fallen_crippled: they merged two characters in one (Kitty/Rachel). They gave Rachel's chronal abilities(time travel) to Kitty Pryde as a secondary mutation. An interesting move. I liked it but I wished they introduce Rachel Summers as a hound.

I actually don't see how the original story was so impossible to stay truer to. I'm really not seeing that.

It's an incredibly simple story. The only reason all the cast was changed was for simple box office reasons. However, Wolverine is in it ANYWAY. There was no reason for him to take the lead role over Kitty. None.

Also, what was the point in adding ALL those characters and making a big deal of them returning when:

1. They weren't in the original story.

2. They weren't even "in" this film? Sunspot didn't even have any lines. Blink had about three. You don't need them, so don't include them. It can't be a fan nod because fans of them won't dig that.

It was just frustrating because this could've been the first X-Movie I've ever really liked. At times it felt so dark and grim, but then it just destroyed itself like they always do.

Plus, please no Quicksilver ever again. WHAT is the point in having him in this and not have him as Magneto's kid or anything? They presumably took Wanda out due to The Avengers 2, but then just remove Quicksilver. His part could've gone to any speedster, an original speedster or any stealthy mutant. Like, I DUNNO. Nightcrawler?!

What a mess. Fox is InGen. Doing things before considering if they should.

Also, why do they not interact in X-Men 1? Marvel Studios movies interlock perfectly because they were planned from the start. Fox trying to retroactively jam these into continuity is dumb.

Trask was a big, black man in The Last Stand. Now he is, literally, the opposite. Why could Kitty do that? Why not have ANY psychic? Why not have Emma Frost be a survivor so at least she could do it? WHY NOT THE PROFESSOR?! IT'S A PSYCHIC THING.

People always expect the movie to follow the original story and are always upset when it doesn't but I am not sure how many super hero movies ever do. the movie universe' are their own, and I'm sorry but wolverine makes money, kitty pride does not. The same character who told them to go eff themselves in the previous film would decide to help a random kitty pride....(even though she wouldn't have been born in the 70's so she would have no body to inhabit)

not having him as magnetos kid? He says "hmm...my mom once knew a guy who could move metal" and at the end his mother looked at the screen in horror when she saw what Erik was doing on television...she didnt have to be in that scene at all but they threw her in there. They were hinting at it I assumed, even the people I went with who knew nothing about their history assumed they were suggesting he is the bastard child of magneto or something.

They also cut a scene out where quicksilvers mom tells the younger girl to go bug her older sister. People assumed that younger girl was wanda and they messed with them being twins, but it wasn't , just some random sibling.

Nightcrawler would have been in Germany no...? they didn't meet him until X2, would have have conveniently been in America...

sucks you didn't like it over all. I found myself bored at some parts. the ending was kind of silly when they filled in the gaps.

not sure how they are going to explain gambits age either.

The only way I could conceivably accept this new power was at some unexplained point Kitty and Xavier learned that Kitty's phasing powers were a space mutation and her secondary mutation is a time mutation. So she somewhat has a power element of "time and space." It's pretty crappy but it allows me to somewhat sleep at night now :P

I'm surprised how well this film worked with such a large cast.

THis isn't the end but it's clearly the demarkcation of the end of the original trilogy characters (rightly) and packs an appropriate emotional beat.

The movie was (at times) entertaining, but with a plot that was glossed over more than the paint job of a new Ferrari, and endless glorified cameos thrown together into a blender and set to puree. I give Singer some slack as he had to somehow wash and disinfect the stain left by Brett Ratner and his incompetent handling of X-Men 3, which is really the point of the entire film in a nutshell, wipe the slate clean and start from scratch.

There are some really talented actors involved with this franchise, hopefully the writers will give them something of real substance to work with moving forward, the table is set, time to see if Fox can do something with it.

@theheat: I do not think origins happened either, since raven was stryker.

I LOVED this movie. I loved how gruesome and disturbing the future was, but was a little disappointed that Iceman could be killed. I mean he is always smashed and melted, but he is an immortal. Also, I haven't kept up with Mr. Costa since the first series of New Mutants in the 80's, but can he shoot fire and fly? All in all, I am very excited for what is to come!

I am not the harshest critic but this movie is bar none, the best one. Bestest of the bestest best. I am still digesting it, still in a weird state. A happy one though.

You've got to fix the rating on this review. Not just another star to make it five either. Insert a plus in there as well.

I really liked it. It wasn't perfect, because I wished that we got to see more of the war in the future, as well as more of some of the new X-Men characters. Once Wolverine goes back into the 70s, it slows down a bit, but picks up steam after a little while. I do absolutely love the ending.

@crimsonlord53: I don't want the X-Men to share a universe with the Avengers. It waters down the mutant cause by having other superheroes flying around. Plus, if this movie is good, Fox can keep it.

I thought it was HILARIOUS when Logan was talking to Charles on the plane and was like: "Storm, Scott, Jean... remember those names." He didn't know Storm's name was Ororo? Hahaha... I nearly busted out laughing. He only identified her with her X-Man code name. How are you supposed to find her BEFORE she becomes an X-man? I mean I think Prof. X would have found her regardless, but I just thought that was hilarious.

Other than that, and the numerous clusterf!@#% that is the X-men continuity, I liked it. Sort of a lot. WAAAAAAAY better than Amazing Spider-Man 2, but not quite Winter Soldier awesome. I recommend it.
