X-23 #18 - Misadventures in Babysitting, Part 2

5

X-23 quickly discovers that babysitting Valeria and Franklin Richards involves a little bit more than simply reading them each a bedtime story...

The Good

The action packed story opens with X-23 dangling at the end of a dragon's tail as the beast soars through the air with Valeria and Franklin on board. It's a good thing that Sue and Reed aren't around to witness this mess! What starts out as harmless fun, lands all three of them in big trouble. One minute they are riding a dragon across the New York City sky and the next they are stranded on a distant galaxy, running out of air.

This issue is a lot of fun. Marjorie Liu does a fantastic job telling a fun and exciting story that will leave you wanting more. The story jumps around a lot from one location to the next, but it is very easy to follow. There is also a lot of character development in this issue between Julian and Laura, which is definitely nice to see since Laura had been so dismissive of him in the previous issue. For whatever reason, X-23 simply does not want to talk about her problems, although it's clear Julian wants to feel close to her again. I absolutely adore Sana Takeda's art in this issue. His pencils are stunning and the light inks compliment his artistic style really well. This book feels very mystical. The blue, purple and green hues are perfect -- particularly in the scenes where Laura and Julian find themselves trapped in a garbage compactor. Absolutely gorgeous art, paired with an overall fun story.

The Bad

There is really nothing to complain about in this issue. Definitely looking forward to the next one.

The Verdict

If you want to read one X-23 story arc before it is canceled early next year, make it Adventures in Babysitting. This is a feel good comic with likable characters. The story is totally unpredictable and you never know what will happen next. The scenes shared by Laura and Julian are definitely worth reading, and the book in general is just very pretty. If you want to read an X-23 story, pick up this issue and the one before it (#17) and dive right in. I highly recommend this story arc.
