Worlds' Finest #6 - Family Matters Review

2

Damian Wayne meets Helena Wayne in the latest issue of WORLDS' FINEST.

The Good

The decision to split the art between Kevin Maguire and George Perez based on characters (Perez drew Power Girl's panels while Maguire focused on Huntress) was a smart move. Splitting it this way made the transitions between stories far less erratic and very easy to read. I thought that was really well done. For the most part (with the exception of a few panels), I felt Maguire did a really great job.

The idea behind this book, the idea that these two Earth 2 characters should meet their Earth Prime counterparts is clever. What better way to introduce Helena into Earth Prime and introduce her to characters in the current universe than by introducing her to Damian Wayne, Batman's son? It's a great idea that wasn't executed very well, unfortunately.

The Bad

I hate to say it, but I was not a fan of George Perez's pencils, particularly in this issue. There were moments that felt awkward and strange, particularly some of the expressions he illustrates. Also, brace yourself for yet another issue where Power Girl loses her clothes, because yes, that happens. If Paul Levitz spent half as much time thinking about creative ways to push the plot as he did in finding ways to remove Power Girl's outfit in every issue, we might have a better series on our hands.

There were several details about the plot that felt poorly thought out and poorly planned. For example, I find it hard to believe that Karen Starr could acquire a live feed of Wayne Industries without Bruce Wayne's knowledge. There is one scene in particular which she does this: she suddenly discovers the fight between Damian Wayne and Helena Wayne via a feed she has to Wayne Industries, and intercepts the battle between the two. The fact that she managed to instal this without Batman's knowledge is a little bit unbelievable.

But the silliness doesn't stop there. In the beginning of the issue, Helena breaks into Wayne industries (we don't see how, we just see that she does) and she gets ready to steal 5 million dollars of WI. As if the billionaire playboy won't notice. Normally when a person steals from a company and doesn't want to get caught, they do it in a discrete way. You know, like, a little bit every day over a long period of time. Clearly, Helena wanted to get caught.

There is a very strange single page spread in this issue that depicts Power Girl literally kicking Damian's butt, and it is very awkwardly illustrated. Additionally, as much as I was looking forward to Damian's appearance in this, I felt he was very oddly depicted. His dialogue did not sound like Damian.

The Verdict

So, clearly, I had a few issues with this comic. I felt that the issue left a lot to be desired, the structure was weird and the direction of the story was unclear. Levitz takes a lot of liberties with character's who aren't in panel, and sort of just does whatever he wants. I didn't feel like he put much thought into the way the plot should unfold at all. I think this issue has a lot of problems. The idea behind the story, the first encounter, could have been great but I felt that overall the story was poorly structured, disorganized, not very well thought out and just badly executed.

I was considering buying this issue because of Damian, but you just saved me 3 bucks. Thank you.

This series sounds...bad. You should drop it yourself!

Now I consider myself a masochist but even I dropped this a few issues ago.

ok, was very intrigued on the Robin and Huntress confrontation, but looks like this is a drop until it gets a new writer

I don't even know why DC started this book. It plain sucks Poor Huntress.

Coming off the Huntress mini and the reveal she was Helena Wayne made me excited for this book. Some of my first comics were the all star comics in the late 70s with the earth 2 power girl and huntress and I was excited to see them together. I have always been a huge fan of Perez, such a detailed artist who draws group shots so well. But I hate to agree his work here is a little off. I also dropped the book

i have the be the only one on this site not extremely disappointed with this comic at this point... i honestly dont see this comic being as bad as some of the other comics dc are putting out now yet this one gets ripped the hardest in the reviews and comments

Posted by notarandomguy

I'm pretty sure DC's thought process went something like this:

DC exec #1: Okay, the boob window has to go. It's too objectifying and immature. We'll give her a new costume that covers her from head to toe.

DC exec #2: But she's Power Girl... What do we do to compensate?

DC exec #1: We'll completely alter her personality and make her openly crude and sexual, have her flirt a lot and throw around a ton of innuendos. That sort of thing.

DC exec #2: I'm not really sure if that-

DC exec #1: And have her lose her clothes every issue.

DC exec #2: ....Brilliant!

I dropped this book awhile ago too :(

It's heartbreaking because I became so excited at the prospect of PG and Huntress teaming up, seriously horrible how far this book has tanked.

I can't speak to the contents of this book, but I saw the preview on Comic Vine. I just find this cover image incredibly awkward. One top of showing Damian striking Helena. Everything part of this looks so still and uninteresting. I don't get any sense of movement. I sometimes wonder if many comic artists could use a lesson in physics.

I know how people make a big deal about how Damian was raised by Talia in the League of Assassin's, but I just can't believe that a grown up Helena that was raised by both Selina and Bruce together couldn't have trained ehr well enough to defend against this brat.

I echo this, i dropped the book after the last disapointing issue and was thinking about picking up this issue since Damian was there, glad i didnt now. I agree with the review too, if Bruce can spot the slightest tap on any of his systems, you would definelty think he would notice someone hacking his network and running feeds from it. The series is just a complete mess, if they dont do something fast its going to be on the chopping block! Id still rather see Helena and Karen return to Earth2, that would be far more interesting.

I duped myself into buying this title this month because I thought, "Do I really need to read another Batman title in Detective Comics?" Now I regret my decision. I should have just stuck with Batman.

I think Levitz might be making a nod to what originally happened with Power Girl's boobs. I heard they got so big because each issue her creator would make them larger until someone noticed and told him off in editorial. I think Power Girl losing her clothes might be a bad running joke?

I guess most of you making the complaints about how easy it is for them to steal the money from Wayne Industries missed the comment in the first or second issue where they told us how inept Earth 1 computer systems were compared to Earth 2's. Also try to remember she was taught by E2's Bruce and Selina how to do this.

This was the story that I wanted to read but the execution of this concept was just horrible. i really should have read the review before spending my money of this crap. Why can't they put a good writer on this book? I mean this is an awesome premise, especially with how earth 2 is set up but they just bumbled it so bad. A good writer maybe Robinson could spin this as a crossover between earth 2 and this issue. the zero issue was the only decent issue so far in this series.

Yeah I feel it's only fair that this be accounted for. But hearing about Perez's lackluster art is too bad, its been another of this book's glaring weaknesses the entire time.

Searching... searching... searching for the REAL Power Girl... searching... searching...

Wow , I doub this book can become even dumber . Has somebody a scan of this scene ?

You need no further evidence than this comic to prove that giving Batman children is a terrible idea. It's silly, it's goofy and I think both Helena Wayne and Damian have been taken much too far as characters. Come on now, Batman has to have some credibility, they're taking him back to Golden Age nonsense which you can only really do in an ironic sense if you want it to be successful.

And Power Girl? Wtf?

Posted by arnoldoaad

This was really bad, the parts of Powergirl are just embarrassing, she goes to space to tap into a satellite and we spend several pages on this and then in one later page a cosmic thingy blow up the tap that she put, what was the point of all that? then she flirts with some astronauts and then goes to lose her closes again, if this character was a little more "mature" and used less close it could perfectly fit in Tarot Witch of the Black Rose.

It is very annoying that the only aspect of her personality that seems important at all is her sexuality, That fails on so many levels.

Then the Damian vs Huntress fight, this is so underwhelming, this is not at all what I was expecting, the dialog seems so unnatural, How could Damian possibly guess that she might be the daughter of (a) Batman just only by her fighting style, and then, he loses his mask and the conversation becomes more and more unnatural.

very disappointing issue

http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/worlds%27-finest -_- Could this book get more stupid ?

Posted by inblackestnight

Wow. Really surprised at the overwhelming negative response. Yes, I enjoyed this issue.

"I find it hard to believe that Karen Starr could acquire a live feed of Wayne Industries without Bruce Wayne's knowledge"

Well, it could also be that bruce wayne is well aware, but he has chosen to forego this issue for now? if this issue is in line with the current batman family timelime, then the whole family has their hands full with the joker returning? What about dealing with simon baz? what about the throne of atlantis? There are clearly more pressing issues for batman to be dealing with right now.

"Helena breaks into Wayne industries (we don't see how, we just see that she does) and she gets ready to steal 5 million dollars of WI."

Helena Wayne is the daughter of Earth 2 Batman and Catwoman. She could have used knowledge gained from them to break into the premises.

"Power Girl literally kicking Damian's butt, and it is very awkwardly illustrated."

Power girl kicked Damian wayne in the butt. The statement speaks for itself. It WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AWKWARD.

I admit the issue could have been executed better, but it wasn't that bad.

Why is she stealing more money? Her best friend is a billionaire, she can't ask for a loan? Makes no sense.

Your not the only one. I stayed away from it because of the reviews but after reading 1-4 im going to start a subscription. Perez is doing great covers and maquire provides a good complimentery art to perez. I also dig the humor, and friendship of the 2 girls. Powergirls suit has also grown on me. Lol, pg kicked damion in the ass.
