Worlds' Finest #10 - Some Things You Can Change, Some You Can't Review

3

Power Girl and Huntress do their own thing but come together when some bad news surfaces.

The Good

There are some bad things happening here. By that I mean Power Girl is a little ticked off. It's an interesting situation to see what happens when a super-powered individual gets the idea of trying to get revenge. Power Girl is upset over having her property is stolen. It's clearly an abuse of her power. Seeing repercussions and the fact that she may not have planned out her actions carefully is a nice twist.

Huntress is the rational one, going about getting answers with a more stealthy approach. What she discovers isn't earth-shattering but is interesting. Her investigation is cut short when she receives a certain piece of news.

Even though a huge deal hasn't been made over it, there is some fallout from BATMAN INCORPORATED #8. It is something that boosts up the issue a little but not enough time is spent dealing with it. This is definitely a direction that fully needs to be addressed, given who she was on Earth 2. There may be other stories planned to take place before but it's surprising we haven't seen more on this yet. I do want to see more of this angle.

Kevin Maguire adds a great vibe to the series. It gives the issue a more laid back and fun feeling which is what I would want in a team up with this version of Power Girl and Huntress. The expressions he draws is always great to see.

The Bad

While interesting to see Power Girl use her powers for her own means (revenge), it feels like the story doesn't really go anywhere. The action suddenly shifts from a debacle to her lounging around on her island. Huntress' "mission" is also cut short in order to accommodate the fallout portion. We get about five pages but it would have been nice to see it played out some more. I mentioned this does add a nice new element but it feels like it was just thrown in for the sake of having a connection to BATMAN INCORPORATED. At least, in the book's defense, it wasn't labeled with a Requiem logo like the other Bat-titles.

The Verdict

WORLDS' FINEST is a book I keep rooting for. There are some good elements in this issue but the series continues to feel like it's not really going anywhere. Power Girl abusing her powers is interesting and hopefully there will be some more repercussions over what she did. You have to wonder what Superman would think if he knew what she was doing. Huntress displays her own prowess but that is cut short as we see some fallout from BATMAN INCORPORATED. It raises some interesting questions but the way it's presented almost gives a forced feeling in the middle of this comic. We definitely need to see more between Huntress and Batman. It may not be essential reading but hopefully will set the stage for future stories. The 'shock' at the end just might make you scratch you head as well.

I wonder when Superman family is going to meet Power Girl. It should be interesting and to see other members of the Bat-Family see Huntress should be interesting too.

This series sucks. The concept is awesome, but somehow it's just not coming together. Even with a great event like Damian dying for this issue to lean on, it still falls very short.

As an older fan over 30, I remember how much I loved the Legacy heroes from Earth 2 and the JSA. I have been lukewarm to Earth 2 because I loved those old characters and after all that Geoff did to make them relevant and cool, not to mention he cleaned up the continuity really they got rid of all that work I am not crazy about this Earth 2 concept.

I appreciate this concept but it has really been stale and king of boring. I liked the Huntress alot post-Crisis. She was really cool and I loved how there was this tension between her and Batman and how she was always looking for his approval. I have read it here and there but it does not hold my attention. I loved these characters pre-New 52. I thought it was supposed to be a "soft reboot" but they scorch earthed.

Looks like I'm still going to keep reading this series. Good review :)

I don't want this book canned but, for the love of god get a new writer. The only reason I got this is cause I'm collecting all the Damian fallout comics and keep following if they're good but I think the worst thing about this book is everyone know how good it could be and it falls so short

they cancel all the good books but keep the stupid ones.

I like the fact that they are hiding from the other heroes. I did like Huntress meeting Robin that was a cool team up. Then he dies on her after they make a connection. I like this series.

Not sure if you meant this as a reply to Earth2 #10, but…

As an older fan in my late 20s, That's why I love the Earth 2 book! If you haven't read Earth 2, I highly recommend it. I think the differences between Superheroes of Earth 1 and the Wonders of Earth 2, the one world government, the prevalence of magic, etc. make them far more interesting than the sloppy way the World War II silliness of the Silver Age was retconned into the modern age JSA.

But I agree that the characters in World's Finest are pale shadows of their pre-Flashpoint selves. I didn't much care for the issue where Damian and Helena met. I hoped that the previous issue's attack seemingly coming from Mister Terrific would lead to the girls' to more actively search for a way back to their world/dimension/universe/whatever you wanna call it. After seeing this month's cover, I was hopeful that Huntress would try and connect with Batman and build up some sort of relationship (not necessarily the "daughter from another universe," but "Hi I'm a hero who looks up to you" would be a start). It's a sad state of affairs when the only GOOD issue of this book was #0.

Not feeling it anymore with this series, plus no more Perez art doesn't help. Too bad cause great concept and got off to an interesting start, but this title is fizzling fast.

Ugh, it's becoming a damn Partridge Family episode at the Wayne Manor, the last thing we need is Batman to be responsible for yet another kid.

@arnoldoaad: How is it even possble for Power Girl to have sex with a normal Human? He would literally have to be a Man of Steel to open the Gates of Heaven so to speak. Wish they would give Powergirl her old costume back. If she's a women who isn't ashamed of her sexuality and actually enjoys sex as much as she does in this series, might as well give her the clevage window back.

there is kind of a difference between a woman who enjoys her sexuality and pretty much how Powergirl is being portrayed here, pretty much a nympho

and she will get her old looks back though i doubt that will have a huge change in the character since her personality sucks so bad now

I really want this book to be good. It's actually on my reading list, but I might drop this since I am so behind in comics. It's true that this comic is lack luster at best. Power Girl is reduced to a whining rich girl with super powers it seems. Also her costume is always ripping apart making her seem 'cheap'.

I really wish that this was Helena Bertinelli!

Superman is in full control of his strength, and so is Power Girl, from what I can tell
