Wolverine & the X-Men #7 - Mutatis Mutandis, Conclusion: It Ain't Easy, Bein' Brood

5

There is such an incredible amount of story and action that it's like getting four fun-filled comics in one!

Each time you get to open an issue of WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN, you know it's going to be crazy-good.

The Good

Let me say that I like Wolverine. I don't love him. I probably like him as much as the next person. That being said, this is my favorite X-title. We get a different feel pretty much from each of the other titles. They're good but they don't have the charm that this title does. This comic is in a league of its own.

It's hard to believe we're only on the seventh issue. Jason Aaron has been packing in so much action and adventure (and humor!) in this title that you need to pause to catch your breath afterwards. Not only do we get to see the idea of a school for young mutants, we have the adventures of the X-Men inside Kitty Pryde as well as Kitty's fight. It's a fight on two fronts. There's also the growing in popularity new character, Broo. Will fans be pleased with what happens here? Of course we have Wolverine doing some inappropriate behavior dealing with gambling on another planet with Quentin Quire. The fact that Wolverine used him to cheat makes it even worse. And wait until you see what Quentin starts doing in this issue.

Nick Bradshaw's art with Justin Ponsor's colors adds to the light-hearted nature (even when things start getting violent and ugly). It's amazing how many characters and plotlines are crammed into this issue but it never feels cramped and the art never feels rushed.

The Bad

Is this the typical X-Men book? It doesn't need to be. The only problem I have is the way Wolverine's face is drawn. He looks too...clean or young. He's always a little scruffy and even though he has the big sideburns, it's not quite enough.

This may not be exactly a problem with the issue but Wolverine's actions and involving a student, even if he's desperate, seems too much. Surely there'd be another mutant he could have taken. Hopefully we'll see some repercussions from all of this.

The Verdict

There's no questioning the fact that this is my favorite X-Men title. It's not like the others. It has a completely light-hearted feel even when the dangers arise and the chaotic action errupts. I've seen some question the direction Jason Aaron is taking this title but I don't get the complaints. Simply put, this comic is pure fun. This is exactly what I want in a comic book. There's plenty of action, suspense, humor and plot developments. We've seen a lot of new characters and they're winning me over a little more month after month. I can only hope that the upcoming AVENGERS VS. X-MEN won't have a huge impact on the feel and tone of this title.

I wasn't too bothered either way about Nick Bradshaw's art, but as of this issue, I officially want Bachalo back :/ Otherwise I really love this book, the right amount of silly. I can't help but love X-Books based at the school.

Does anyone else want the the Iceman-Warbird relationship to develop more. It might be weird but it is intriguing.

I think it kind of makes sense if Wolverine has a clean-cut look for this book. He is a headmaster after all and so being scary-looking wouldn't really be a benefit here. Unfortunately (super unfortunately) I can't get this book yet because I subscribed late even tho I had the chance to subscribe early (I didn't know yet how good it was), and now my comics store can't find the first issue in circulation so I have to wait until they do :(

Most interested in Broo's character development and the fact that what was his name Bloodstar? The scientist alien said that the Bamfs werent Bamfs, I wonder what they are then.

Is Bachalo going to return to this title anytime soon? Or was he just in for the first 3 issues?

I think he's doing the upcoming AvX arc.

By the end of this issue, I couldn't help but feel both afraid of and afraid for Broo's future.

I have enjoyed this book, but the main reason I have been getting it is because I am following Angels story...he hasn't been in it for the past couple issues, that being said I. Love. Broo.

I love this series now, and how it treats all of its characters, when it started Warbird just seemed like a side character, never believing she'd be at all important, in this issue we saw more glimpse of her and her personality and I thought, "how awesome, everyone in this book is equally important". I love that in any form of storytelling...

Next month sabretooth. And lets be honest I think Quire can't be redeemed and Wolverine knows it.

That's interesting...What if that comes into play in future issues?

I actually think that ReGenesis was the best thing to happen to the X-titles since Messiah CompleX.

'Ho reaaaaaally?

Yes O_O

Schism was fcking ridiculous, but the quality of the X-Books has improved afterwards, IMO.

Wolverine running a school still doesn't sit well with me at all, but I didn't realize how much I missed the Westchester setting until WATXM came out. I like the tone a lot and am grumbles kind of starting to like Quentin Quire...

Uncanny X-Men by Gillen is my favorite X-title along with Peter David's X-Factor, but this is a close 2nd. The X-Titles have never been this great all at once! :)

Agreed. Gillen has been my fave so far and I was originally hesitant to pick up WATXM but I'm pleasantly surprised at how good it is.
