Wolverine #7 - Mortal

3

Wolverine no longer has his trusty healing factor. How will this impact the X-Man and who will come to comfort him?

The Good

"Mortal" begins here and its first chapter is sure to divide very passionate Wolverine fans. Logan's response to being vulnerable is humbling and aims for a more emotional issue which is loaded with cameos, but at the same rate, it may be too much of a reaction on his part for some. Yes, the world can now kill him and there are some great moments which throw us into what life was like for Logan, but others come off as a bit too heavy-handed.

Despite the cover implying some kind of physical brawl, this issue is all about Wolverine's internal struggle over losing his healing factor. While it never quite pulled me in or hit me with the level of emotion it's aiming for, it does have some solid character driven moments. Again, these are sure to be polarizing for longtime fans because Wolverine isn't reacting lightly to this change. You'll see him react differently to everything from shaving to traffic. His body is vulnerable, but his mind seems to be hurt the most by this change.

This issue is packed with cameos. It's great seeing the relationships Wolverine has with so many individuals and the bonds he's created over the years. The various perspectives help lend some extra weight to his situation and Thor's brief (yet totally random) appearance worked the best out of the bunch.

And if you're wondering about adamantium poisoning, that's quickly addressed and apparently won't be a role in this story.

The Bad

The scene at Nightcrawler's statue has terrible timing. We already know he's coming back to life and Wolverine being there and what he said only reminds us that death in this universe is rarely permanent. So if anything, this scene detracts from what this story is trying to accomplish (make us concerned about Wolverine's future).

As I said above, there's a lot of cameos, but it comes as a double-edged sword. Some of the extra voices work well, but if we're diving into Wolverine's character, I'd rather see him able to carry extra panels by his lonesome instead of essentially relying on others to deliver the various messages. At the same rate, I understand steps must be taken to establish the greater picture, but I feel like that detraction could have been shortened and granted us more time to look into Wolverine coping with this change.

Verdict

This chapter strives for some heavy feels and brings in a lot of cameos to give extra perspective, but not all of the scenes work and while some are fairly somber moments, nothing here is likely to get the waterworks going. That said, one thing this book consistently does is revitalize my interest with each cliffhanger. Even if you agree this issue is just okay (or even worse), it ends on a note which is sure to keep most around for at least the next issue.

If Logan doesn't have his healing factor... shouldn't the adamantium kill him in seconds?

@xwraith:

I believe his healing factor is being greatly weakened, not completely taken away. So he's slowly dying.

I have really enjoyed what Cornell has done in the past but I dropped this series after issue two. I have picked issues since and given then a quick go but I really can't warm to this series. If anything all I could think was that this used to be an amazing kick-ass character who now comes across like a bit of a wuss.

My thoughts? If the likes of Daredevil and Steve Rogers can cope without an uber healing factor, accomplish all they accomplish, deal with world class threats and world class assassins on a weekly basis, and if Wolverine's "supposed" to have <skillz> to match, then, well, what's the f'n problem?

Stop tanking crap, start thinking through fights, and start utilizing the martial abilities you've spent 100+ years honing "bub".

I agree. All is not lost though. Check out Wells & Maduriera's run over in Savage Wolverine (specially issue #7) if you want a dose of the old bad@$$ Logan.

Melancholic, mopy "woe is me" Wolverine is not my cup of tea. That's not the direction to take to "deepen" this particular character IMHO. It just neuters him. Bring the honorable, sacrificial "samurai" spirit Logan with the martial no holds barred warrior to the fore if you want to reinvigorate his depth and step away from the "raar, roar, slash" rinse and repeat garbage we get too much of ...

Pretty silly to see Wolverine frightened of shaving because his healing factor is gone. I mean, come on.

@super_soldierxii: I am so glad you mentioned the current Wells story, I picked up issues 6 and 7 of savage wolverine instead today and you are not wrong. That is a great story and awesome art, it feels like the violent actioner I hope for when I read a wolverine story.

I also totally agree that introspective wolverine is not the way to go. There are so many other ways for a story to go.

I kind of agree. It is pretty cool to see an introspective Wolverine instead of "stab, stab, stab, STAB!", but Cornell is overdoing it. Wolverine is the kind of the guy who has faced immense suffering throughout his life but doesn't let it bog him down, and is always looking forward. He doesn't cry in his pillow like a heart broken teenage girl. Cornell can still give us an introspective, even a little emotional Logan, but he still needs to adress the fierce warrior side too.

Glad you liked it. I think it's one of the better characterizations to come around the corner in quite a while - love the Elektra characterization too. Top notch. Spider-Man banter was dangerously close to the Parker version though, and not reflective of SpOck ... very reminiscent of the old camaraderie between the two top tier street levelers which I appreciated. Just out of character slightly given Parker is not at the wheel. Though, admittedly, I haven't been following Spider-Man's own titles lately. Is Parker back?

As an aside, Wolverine catching himself "smiling" brought me back to the Mcfarlane days ... back when Wolverine first fought Grey Hulk and caught himself "howling his triumph to a moon" he couldn't see. Good stuff.

That said, I actually think this is one of the few things Marvel has done to catch my interest lately. I'll skim it once it comes to trade and see if it makes the cut. grade.

Hey, thanks. I have trickled in and out now and then ... but yeah, I've been a little scarce on the Vine the past 6 months or so.

I think there's a problem with notifications too. I wasn't notified that you had sent me a message, for example - I chanced onto it by checking out responses by other users. I have noticed that, more often than not, I do not receive notification that a member has sent me a comment since they "updated" their website.

Savage Wolverine seems to be going in the right direction. Always was a fan of Madureira's art, let's hope they shoot out some quality Wolverine storytelling. Been too long.

Is it just me, or is removing one or more of a character's powers an incredibly lazy way to try to get people to read your comics? It really comes across as more of a gimmick than being done for the sake of a good story.

That being said, I haven't read this issue (or any of this Wolverine series), so I could easily be wrong. Feel free to correct me if I'm misinterpreting the situation.

I know, I thought the same thing. I mean, they've mentioned plenty of times in the past that although Wolverine had his healing factor, he felt pain the same way as anyone else. And he's been burned, stabbed, crushed, shot, and nuked more times than Wile E. Coyote, so why is he flinching at the thought of a shaving nick? And if you reply with there's not a chance he'll cut his jugular, anyone who would do that probably isn't fit enough to survive anyway.

And are Wolverine and Storm supposed to be dating now or what?!

@super_soldierxii: Same with the notifications. I make a habit of looking at my history and reading up on threads I interact in until nobody responds to me for a few days.

Scarce huh? Getting aggravated with people and the lack of sense in battles? Or just better things to do?

As per Wolverine, I agree. Outside of the Ultimate U, nothing I have read has been good in some time. Now even that is pooped on. Veshark gave me a few things to check up on, so I'll do so when I get a chance.

For all of you who are asking about the Wolverine movie. I saw it yesterday. Since its already out here in Germany and it was horrible. I am not joking.

The setting is great, the actors are cool and the movie is pretty good for the first act. After the Bullettrain scene everything goes downhill pretty fast.

Mild SPOILERS follow, but nothing that important plotwise:

There really is not much of a thematic reason for Logan to loose his healing factor, which I already feared from the trailers. Only bonus is, he doesn't give it up willingly, which the trailers didn't really show. It comes across as a cheap ploy to highten the suspense, which is cheap writing in my mind, like all the Smallville episodes where Clark lost his powers.

The fight scenes are absolutely run of the mil, straight to video stuff. There is one fight against Shingen which is pretty cool looking, but due to lighting and set. The final confrontation is very CGI heavy and its by far the worst CGI of a big tentpole movie this summer. Apart from that, the final fight is also incredibly stupid written and boring.

My biggest let down is the ninja fight scene in that village, which was teased heavily in the trailers. I was so pumped for this, since Logan is all "You only brought those guys?", but then he fights two, then proceeds to run away from the conflic and gets taken down without much of a fight. WHAT?!?! I really hoped that they use this scene to show whatt a badass he is, but nope. They also cut a lot of action that you saw in the trailers from the movie. For example, the scene in that small ninja village, where Logan destroys a generator or something like that, which creates a big explosion that takes out a lot of Ninjas? Its not in the movie.

Oh and the Viper is a villain straight out of that Mutant X show, back in the day. What a crap performance!!! I loathed every single shot she was in.

SPOILERS OVER

Huge letdown. Really. All the talk from Hugh that we get to see the Berserker rage and all that... Nothing is there. Wolverine had more badass scenes in Wolverine Origins and Last Stand then in this one. He really came across as weak. Oh man, I am so bummed about this. I even bought a new Wolverine shirt for the preview night.

Overall, as bad as it sounds, I liked Origins a bit more. Sure, its also a very bad film, but it had at least a few cool moments. Oh yeah, and Last Sand is actually a good movie, compared to this. Its really sad. At best it would get a 6/10 from me, but thats only because the Japan stuff looks nice and I really like Wolverine. Without that fan bonus its a 5/10 movie for me. Cannot believe how it has such a good score on rotten tomatoes.

I haven't been reading Cornell's Wolverine to be honest. Nothing I've heard attracts me to drop my mula on it ... $4 is asking too much to give a read a try when the feedback has been so lackluster. Too much other material drawing my attention (and hard earned cash) of late.

I'm not at all into the Cornell read ... picked up a few issues and found it kinda "meh". So yeah, staying away from this arc based solely on the synopsis and on what I've been hearing.

It's "OK" for Wolverine to show fear ... but it needs to be done right. I mean, when he had completely lost his healing factor during the Fatal Attractions storyline, along with the adamantium, Wolverine's face was etched with fear during a Danger Room exercise for the first time. His fellow X-Men noted it in awe, almost disbelief, like it was the first time they'd seen genuine fear in Logan's eyes. That was done right. That was a cool moment and written well.

Here, I'm getting the impression it's being laid on a little thick by Cornell ...

Watch T'Challa be completely written out of character next issue. In this issue it says that he is the Black Panther (which he is not) and the king of Wakanda (which he is also not). Shuri is now the ruler of Wakanda and the Black Panther. She has been since Doomwar. So why is T'Challa being written into this silly story? If you want to move forward with Wolverine/Storm then do so. But why add T'Challa and ignore continuity? sigh

I'll be waiting to see what happens next issue, but the fact that T'challa was written as the king and the Black Panther in this issue is a hint that next issue will be worst and possibly full of fan service for Wolverine/Storm shippers.

Cornell can't do Wolverine. I agree with a lot of this. The Nightcrawler moment was out of time. Wolverine is throwing a hissy fit because of allergies? He might need a safety razor because he can't go slower with shaving? I hated how he completely overreacts to Thor and thought it was laughable in the most terrible way. I seriously thought he was going to cry when Beast hugged him. I wouldn't have been generous with 3/5, I would have barely given a 2.
