Venom #34 - Family Bonding

5

After months of teasing, Venom vs. Toxin is finally here!

The Good

Writer Cullen Bunn has been building up the rematch between Eddie Brock and Flash Thompson for several issues now. Cliffhanger after cliffhanger, I anxiously waited to see the symbiote slugfest between the classic character and the latest powerhouse from the alien race. Well, the fight has finally come crashing into the issue and I'm happy to say it was absolutely worth the wait. I mean, pretty much the entire issue is focused on this alien vs. alien throwdown. It's brutal stuff as the symbiotes make full use of their claws, teeth and raw strength. There's a lot to love in this battle, but my favorite part has to be Bunn painting a creative picture of how useless bullets are against a symbiote as the projectiles crash into Toxin. "Ripples across symbiote flesh remind me of throwing coins in a wishing well."

As always, this downtown brawl is brought to life by the beyond talented Declan Shalvey and colorist Lee Loughridge. I've said it a thousand times before and I'll say it a thousand times more, Shalvey was brought into this world to illustrate symbiotes. The wild nature of their tendrils, the viciousness of their teeth and claws.. it all looks so good. There's a few creative panels with the more brutal moments and the motion behind these relentless attacks are fantastic. Also fantastic: how creepy the Spider Slayers look. I'm telling you, Shalvey was born just to illustrate VENOM.

The Bad

Honestly, I've got no major complaints with this one. Super fun from start to finish and I loved it.

The Verdict

Based on the next cover, it seems clear the enemies will do the generic "we must team-up to defeat the greater evil" thing, but you know what? If it's half as fun as this issue and if Shalvey continues to bring his "A" game, I'll totally dig it. An engrossingly dark tone, frenetic action and a killer cliffhanger makes this a must read for any symbiote fan and my favorite issue from the series in quite some time.

Meh, all this stupid build up for a meaningless fight. thumbs down

I don't even know what I was expecting when I picked up the last few issues but I'm not really surprised, I'm out... sigh

PS: Nice art, though.

Well, what did you think would happen between them based on last issue's conclusion?

Shalvey should draw a few Spidey comics here and there.

Toxin would wipe the floor with Venom.

Well, if you read the issue, you'll see that's basically what happens.

Lol, touche. ;p

Still, after so many "Toxin" cliffhangers I expected something a little less predictable for this issue. I know Cullen Bunn was supposed to portray Eddie and Toxin working together against Venom but it just feels too contrived with no real reason behind their bloodlust...

I was initially hesitant when Bunn took over for Remender, but damn if he hasn't totally won me over now.

This was plain epic : ), btw not to sound like a fanboy but this has to be one of many comics out there that are really underrated by people, just because Remender left people tought Bunn could not handle this, besides MoE I think he;s done a Fine Job specially in Venom 27,27.1 and the Toxic arc. Great review : )

Marvel needs to step venom back up. This philly/toxin arc is not the monster of evil and circle of four arcs i enjoyed from this comic... This should not be a b-grade comic, venom is a major player and giving him his own city just too say he is does not cut it. Im sorry but no! Shame on u marvel. Good point is i like toxin as a villian or is it i like eddie broke in an alien suit.
