Venom #15 - Home Again

4

The return of Eddie Brock: Symbiote Hunter! Flash settles in as a new member of Secret Avengers and Beast figures out a way to help Flash keep the Venom Symbiote from bonding with him. Little does Beast know, it's too late.

The Good

Eddie Brock! This is the coolest way to bring back a character. Eddie is running around trying to stop what he and Venom started years ago by killing off other Symbiotes and the people they bonded to. He doesn't come off as a villain or a good guy. He's right down the middle, since his murdering actions seem to be for the greater good. This is going to lead up to one epic battle between Eddie and Flash, and I cannot wait to get to that point.

I wasn't too keen on Venom joining up on a team, especially not an Avenger team, but the Secret Avengers seems to be right up his alley. Now, they don't get to go on a mission in this issue, but we do get to see how Flash fits into the team, and while the symbiote, which has bonded with him, is misleading Beast and the others, I think this is already a good fit. Flash also makes a connection with Valkyrie, so we could see a bit of a love connection there.

This series has been pretty fast paced and action packed thus far, and issue 15 of the series slows it down a bit. Remender takes the time to focus more on Flash and his connection to the world around him and takes a mild step back from the struggle between Flash and Venom. This deepens the character, and although this book has been awesome so far, this issue really breathes some extra life into an awesome book.

The Bad

I had a bit of a problem with the art on this issue, mainly with how Lan Medina drew some characters. Peter Parker just doesn't look like Peter Parker. The face is quite different than I'm used to compared to how traditionally his face looked or how Peter is drawn now in the Amazing Spider-Man series. If it weren't for Flash calling Peter by name, I wouldn't have been sure who he was talking to.

The Verdict

I'm very glad that the Circle of Four story line is finished because this book is back on track for me, and I am loving it once again. Remender has taken a character who embodied what people wanted in 90s comic books and completely reinvented him and made him incredibly awesome.

I love how Eddie Brock has come into this series and at some point he and Flash are going to come head-to-head, and it's going to be awesome. Venom, thus far, is a really cool addition to the Secret Avengers, and I loved how this issue took a step back and focused more on Flash's life and relationships with those around him. The only problem I had with the issue was that Peter Parker was drawn in a way where I couldn't tell it was him.

Overall, I highly recommend this series and this issue. It's pure fun, and I can say, without a doubt, I love this version of Venom more than when he debuted, and that's hard for my inner-child to admit that.
