Uncanny X-Men #9 Review

4

The battle between SHIELD, the X-Men and Cyclops' team continues as Dazzler joins in on the fun.

The Good

There's something about Chris Bachalo's art that makes me happy. We've seen how Cyclops has been "recruiting" new mutants to join his team of X-Men and recently we even saw one (Fabio) want to leave the team and go back to his normal life. This is one area where Brian Michael Bendis is creating an interesting take on the notion of mutants. Pretty much every single time in the old days, mutants would be discovered and happily make the trip to the Xavier school. Having that bit of doubt adds a great touch of realism to the comic.

Of course if a mutant was hanging around Cyclops and tried to return home, it wouldn't go unnoticed. This is where we get to see more of Dazzler in her new role at SHIELD. Can I just take this moment to mention I really really dig Dazzler. The moments with her are fantastic. Bravo to Bendis for her scenes.

We also get to see the continued developments between Cyclops' team and SHIELD. It's great having a book focusing on these other areas and keeps a completely different feel from the other X-titles.

The Bad

I understand why certain things happen for the sake of the story and maybe it's nitpicking but I just get bothered with the way SHIELD runs things. If they are preparing this 'battle' against mutants or against Cyclops, you would think they'd have serious precautions against them. We've seen so many foes of the X-Men able to keep them on their toes yet SHIELD gets so easily trounced. More than once here. Pretty embarrassing.

The Verdict

I'm loving what Brian Michael Bendis is doing here and how it has such a different feel from the other X-Men titles. Seeing Cyclops' team and the gathering and training of new mutants along with SHIELD's perspective on the threat they pose is fascinating. Chris Bachalo's art just makes me happy. His colors as well just make everything look so vibrant and cheerful, even when things get a little darker. This title is like a powder keg about to go off. You won't want to miss any of it.

The part where they rescued Fabio was gold. Magik is just awesome.

so SHIELD jus hires anyone these days?

Posted by skyjumpermike

The ladies in the X books are really stealing the show. Dazzler, Magik, Emma, Jean, Kitty, and The Sisters have all been fun to read. I haven't read X-Men, but have been reading Uncanny and All-New. Both are fantastic books.

WHat I enjoyed in this issue is that it had a more light hearted vibe to it and because of that I didn't mind seeing Bachalo's art on this. I also do admit that I may be loosening up to these new recruits though I'd still want to see more.

How in the holiest of hells does Mystique keep causally wandering in and out of SHIELD facilities like a damn revolving door?!

Maria should seriously be fired.

Two things: Eva is the best part of this book!

I love Bachalo, but not his rendition of Coulson here. I was like "wait that's Coulson?"

@kid_apollo: If you cant beat them I guess you hire them...lol

The amount of times Mystique has broken in and out of SHIELD facilities in the past month is astounding. I can't tell if it's going to lead to something or if every X-Men writer is just getting lazy

Also, isn't it technically inaccurate to call the Stepfords triplets? They're still considered quintuplets, aren't they? Just because the other two are dead doesn't mean the rest get downgraded, right?

Considering how easily SHIELD gets taken down during some alien invasion and what not, nowadays I don't expect them to be much help anymore and more of just a means for people like Mystique to use their info for their own uses. SHIELD isn't even a defense group anymore, it's more an information database for any villain who can walk through the door

i really like the series but just like all new it feels a bit slow. like its been almost a year and not much has really happened. im still enjoying it but i think it should be a bi monthly and all new should be too. i really think they need to go into the broken powers a bit more and i feel the team really needs a powerful character on the team since most of their new recruits seem to have more "passive powers". i think they also need to work on getting non mutants on their side

Totally agree on this. I'm still unclear on HOW Cyke's, Emma's, and Magneto's powers are "broken". They seem to be able to use them sometimes, and others not. Is that the extent of their brokenness? Broken when it's convenient for the story?

Also, Dazzler f***ing up Fabio's family's house was... kinda messed up.

I did love Maria catching on to what was happening and it feeling inevitable that Scott and his X-Men would show up. Cool moment.

Been a spotty series for me, but mostly good. Not a Bachalo fan but he did a good job this issue. Glad to see at least one of the 16,000 blondes is dark-haired now!

@perfect_10: I thought I was the only one thinking the same thing. What was the purpose of bringing her to the book, if that was gonna be the end result.

Do you really believe that is the end result? Is that the end of the story? I have a sneaky feeling that if you read the next few issues you'll have a better idea what the point of bringing her into the story is.

I want to like this book, but I absolutely hate his art. I seriously don't understand what everyone else sees in it. Everything looks so abstract and cartoony. Oh, and Dazzler is such a b*tch.

Posted by BreZeJ

@skyjumpermike: It was more of an exaggeration on my part. I just expected to see a grand reintroduction to the character. Also I am tired of seeing Mystique everywhere. I am being picky because I am a Dazzler fan. Again overreaction on my side.

@brezej: I like her too! I'm just assuming that she's going to play a bigger role. If she is out of the picture after this issue, I'll support you in your rage;-)

And this continues to be my favorite book that Marvel puts out. With the big X-men crossover, as with any crossover, I get this sinking feeling that they are going to "shake up" the roster of team after the story. I really hope they have the sense to leave this team alone for those of us that hate Wolverine.

I like dazzlers dialogue and feel in this book and im hoping shes actually a double agent for cyclops otherwise shes just an uncle tom like beast and wolverine these days.

I'm really loving this series, the characters are evolving, the story is flowing (though I hope Irma/Mindee doesn't end up with Triage, for some reason I don't like that character, I think it's because I miss Kyle/Yosts muties and Elixir was a way cooler healer and could've been used here).

I hoped Dazzler to try to talk things a bit, but it seems like she's bought Wolverine & Caps propaganda that Cykes is pure madness in a bottle.

My only "but" would be:

It seems like Mystique right now is the Wolverine of villians in that she appears in nearly every book. She is one of the main villians in WatXM, ANXN and Uncanny in different plots. I though her powers were to change form, not to make her form appear everywhere around the world. She is a good character, but this might be too much Mystique!

Also, isn't it technically inaccurate to call the Stepfords triplets? They're still considered quintuplets, aren't they? Just because the other two are dead doesn't mean the rest get downgraded, right?

Technically it would be like hundredtuplets (or whatever the term is, and I don't remember right now if it was a hundred or a thousand) if we count every existing Stepford Cuckoo.

I hated this.

Dazzler was made to look like a horrible person, and then she dies.

And what makes this worse?! This is EXACTLY what Bendis did before with the Skrulls!!! Secret Invasion anyone? Or did anyone forget that the Skrull Queen waltzed around as Spider-Woman. I'm sorry Bendis, but you are officially out of ideas.

^I hate this^

I hate how Cyclops is written right now...I hope things change after Battle for the Atom...I won't drop this book because Cyclops has been one of my favorite characters...

I do love the development of what happens on the last page...

I sincerely hope Dazzler didn't die on that last page

@mickeymayhew: Her eyes are opened when she's lying on the ground. She's gone.

I loved this issue, until the ending, which ruined what should have been a great comeback story. Bendis traded a potentially interesting storyline for another Mystique twist. You'd think that after all this time, SHIELD would have some shape shifter detectors around or more importantly a power dampener. Nope, old reliable standby Mystique has to be able to fool everyone........here's an idea, introduce a new villain instead of recycling old boring ones

@mickeymayhew: Her eyes are opened when she's lying on the ground. She's gone.

She could just be zonked out. Mystique did just say something about "don't hate me for this," which would be a weird line if she was dead.

when Hannibal got shot in 'Red Dragon' in the flashback at the beginning he was sprawled out on the desk with his eyes open, but he lived. Oh, but that was a film - this is a comic!

Posted by Cafeterialoca

@owie: I don't know. Bendis has a bad habit of killing freely.
